IMO too many iOS musicians are falling into the same trap that many of us fell into last deacde with VSTs- constantly buying new software means you are spending all of your time demoing and not enough time practicing and mastering instruments- I have tried to limit myself to only one page of instrument apps - 16- only the best for me and only the ones that I want to spend quality time in mastering- I ignore new apps unless they look like they will be better at certain tasks than others in my library - and if they are- then the old one goes- a good example was Fieldscaper- which replaced idensity for me-I still like idensity- but it is redundant- it's differences are not enough to keep it- another example was Impaktor- which for me- is so far in advance in terms of sound than any other drum machine that it is the only drum synth outside of gadget I currently use- speaking of Gadget- it replaces much if not all of the bread-n-butter synths out there- allowing me to focus on experimental and esoteric apps- you get the idea- focus on what works best for you- then ignore the rest and practice practice practice- get good at a few apps and make tracks-

This is all very rational and sound advice, but at the prices, and given just a bit of disposable income and serious interest in making music, it's almost a no-brainer to hit 'buy' on the stuff that seems quality.

the thing is- most are so cheap- I buy them- play around with them for awhile- then delete if they don't make the final cut- if you keep the apps that don't make your top 20 or so- they will clutter your device and distract you- just get rid of them- you still own them-

You are right. Sound advice. Very wise. But a man sometimes, late in the evening, might like to take out all of his objects and just gaze upon them and so forth. I've heard.

Buy a guitar, that will open up a whole new set of expensive apps for you to buy :)

    Already did that.

I even just replaced the strings on my Martin.

Apart from some more Auria plugins I'm pretty much apped out.

Yeah, I've begun a cull, and will eventually post a threat as to what has been cast out of the iPad, etc.

I kicked Gadget to the curb, I'm mentally ill or a shoddy contrarian or both.

The only reason I keep Gadget is to have a piano roll for MODULE...........LOL

I too have lots of apps that I'II never use and I find that a tad depressing, but in the scheme of things I've made little use out of some desktop music software as well, which was more expensive.
Egoist is a good example for me, it's a great app, but it just didn't fit in with what I was trying to do - that is create finished tracks and concentrating more of the compositional side of things.

OK, if you've run out of apps to buy, surely you can't have possibly run out of guitars to buy. Because that's not possible.

Hell, you can even just keep collecting the same guitar. Shame Apple doesn't let you do that with apps.

    It's damn shame ! LOL

I wish I could donate old apps to under privileged musicians for a tax right off!

If you're done with guitars then what about getting De-agostini to release a build your own one of these

At 9.99 for 2000 issues with a shiny new knob or jack plug on each issue, should give your money somewhere to go for a bit :D

I actually was thinking about Sweetwaters lo financing deal and grabbing the small para/ analog MOOG for $1200 or a hybrid.

    On the fence.

I got this great Wurley Modular last month which is sweet

Or you could open the pit fully and start with euro rack modular

  • Buy a Roland TB3- a superb emulation of the TB3- and then some :) .......... You just have to not think about how many apps you could buy for a new TB3 (about £220 I think)...... now that would get you a LOT of apps.

I often wonder how much a hardware version of some of my favorite apps would cost. The one I seem to wonder most about is Sector- I think I would be saving for a long time to buy one if it happened to come dressed in a chrome and plastic box with knobs on ........... in the meantime I am very happy to buy such apps at probably less than the price of even the postage and packing would be. My ebay account has also become virtually redundant since migrating from the land of endless cables.
