By the way, this is a great thread; I've learned quite a bit. Thanks to everyone.
I keep learning too man, everyday. To me that's the 'meaning of life': Love & relationships with other human beings and the acquisition of knowledge. I try to at least.
Last thing on bass, it is also very dependent on what genre or bass sound you want and then getting the techniques to get there. Some like a high top on bass, complete with J-Bass style growl and fret noise, some love the percussive slap & pop/funk sound or the Rickenbacker 4001's unique signature sound and on and on...
If you know the bass characteristics you want it makes getting a great bass track easier, instead of just totally winging it, open to whatever saying "Hey, synth or 4-string, either way...just need bass man." That won't do.
You mentioned "Something" by George Harrison with McCartney on bass and the excellent tone he had. That particular tone is very close to the warm, woody tone I like to get as my "default" tone if you will. Then if a song calls for a spikier sound I'll EQ it and maybe change the pickup selection. But for me that true bass tone is key.
All the best brother, you got this...
Agreed. I used to get harped on for not playing 'consistently' enough by my producer/engineer, but the dynamics of my playing (bass or guitar) are the real selling point, and he's come to learn that over time.
