What steps should i take if i want to jailbreak, anything to be aware of?

  • I just updated my phone to 9.3.1 last night. If a jailbreak for it appears, I will probably do it just for iFile and Activator. I can't think of any other tweaks, off the top of my head, that I would get much benefit from. Fortunately, Apple has fixed some of my most hated issues which used to send me running for the jailbreak as soon as it was available.

I'm pretty satisfied with my phone right now, though, so it's not that much of an issue for me. That being said, my iPad is still jailbroken on 8.4.

@supadom, I don't see anything "smartassy" in any of @OscarSouth's comments. Not sure what set you off. I can't see how anything said could have offended you.

I've highlighted what set me off in a subsequent comment. 'Let's get back on track shall we ;)' is the manner I'm talking about. Anyway I have no interest in jail breaking or what improvements in might provide even at a cost of fucking up your device 'because it's worth it' so I'll leave you guys to it.

  • Wow. Never figured you for the hyper-sensitive type. Carry on.

JB definitely sounds enticing but I'd rather spend the time programming synths and messing with music rather than fiddling with the OS. I had that experience with Windows before switching to osx and don't miss the time spent looking for solutions on line and reinstalling drivers.

I seriously doubt apple would tune down the device because it wanted to slow down the performance per se. It's bound to e the fine balance between the screen brightness, heat management, power draw and expected battery life.

I know people have been doing this for ages with gaming machines etc. but some also have had motherboard meltdowns and other problems.

I guess you've stated that you don't use it for music and you're a tinkerer then I'd say go for it. I'd be curious of your adventures so do report back.

Since 7 Windows has been pretty solid, it has recovery options as well but that's my main music system hence why i was thinking about JBing the iPAd but JB seems more relevant to iPhones than iPads.

I'd just like to have the freedom to remove stuff i don't want, access the file system and allow me to use external hds and stuff like that to move data around without having to buy iOS specific stuff that costs a premium.

I overclock my system as well, the chip is designed for it and has plenty of headroom and the mobo has thermal protection so as long as you know what you're doing these days in terms ofcooling etc the risk is pretty minimal.

In terms of throttling i'll have to see if there're any benchmarks for jailbroken iPads.

This was the video I saw on overclocking, but learned from comments that it's actually just removing the CPU throttling. I don't know if it works with iOS9 (or ever)

Loads of smaller system level tweaks around, few good ones on this list:
    http://www.gottabemobile.com/2015/12/12/best-ios-9-cydia-tweaks-for-better-performance/?gbmsl=2

I'm interested to see how much cumulative impact it would be possible to rack up.

    O

Yeah i'm curious how much i could optimize things and improve battery life just by turning off that which i never use, if Apple allowed that it wouldn't be so much an issue; removing and disabling stuff that is eating up resources should have a cumulative benefit, how much i don't know but windows has plenty of stuff enabled by default that's detrimental to system performance...

  • There is a glitch that will slightly speed up things by removing the animations when opening or switching between apps. I think it essentially does the same thing as the NoSlowAnimations jailbreak tweak.

No jailbreak required. Easily removable by rebooting. I've done it to both of my devices. I highly recommend it.

This is unbelievable!! Just did it to my 2 devices on 9.3.1. It's like a dream come true. THANK YOU!!

    O

  • Glad it worked for you. I should have posted this here weeks ago, but I only remember I've done it to my devices on the rare times I reboot.

Haha, yeah. Needless to say.. the iOS version before they fix this bug is the last one I'll ever own..

  • iPad as well? Yeah i'm trying to figure out the benefits for the iPad and for audio as well, i mainly use it as a midi controller although once i get my new desk set up i can look at integrating the iPad a bit better with my DAW, want to use my Fabfilter plugins with Studiomux and stuff like that.

Are there any alternatives to duet display or is it easier to use the iPad as a second screen when it's jailbroken?

Is this the same as going to:
'Settings > accessibility > reduce motion' set to 'on' ?

Haha. Just watch the video and change your life in a way you never imagined possible ;)

  • edited April 2016

I did, the effect seemed very similar in both cases. Have you tried the 'reduce motion' setting ?
I don't think it will change my life, one way or another, mind :)

  • edited April 2016

It's not the same as Reduce Motion. With Reduce Motion on, it still retains the fade-in effect when opening or switching apps.

In the video, the "non-glitched" phone on the right has Reduce Motion turned on. You can clearly see there is a difference in speed.

  • I have jailbroken 2 phones and 2 iPads going back to iOS 5, and the only snags I've had were caused by my own hand. They involved installing conflicting or poorly programmed tweaks. Just install a couple of tweaks at a time, respring, and if you have a conflict, immediately remove them.

There is a safe mode that 'de-activates' the jailbreak for instances like the above.

Personally, I wouldn't still be using Apple phones or iPads without the jailbreak solution. I have to have file system access. It should be a right for those who have the 'privilege' of owning Apple devices (aka computers). It still rubs me the wrong way that they nerf these things out of the box.
