iPad Pro 9.7"

So I got one. Upgraded from an iPad Air (1). For me, the upgrade has been pretty incredible. Obviously there is going to be a huge performance boost from the original Air, but to be fair, the original Air serviced my needs pretty well. But I'm a few screen replacements into it at this point, so just wanted to start fresh with some hardware fresh off the production line at Foxconn. The biggest complaint, and the one I soundly agree with, is the lack of 4gb of ram compared to the "other" iPad Pro. I'm sure there is a marked difference in performance when having many apps open, how could there not be. But again, coming from where I was, this has been something I've gladly relegated to the lower end of my priorities for now. And being a musician who typically records live instruments and rarely loads up on the midi or synths, I'm not even sure I could ever really test that out. When I got the Air, I was stoked because I could run several Auria/Fab Filter plugins simultaneously. Now...well now it's just stupid how much I can get in over my head at one time. Color me happy right now. Of course, as always, I reserve the right to change my opinion in a few minutes.

  • @boone51 Good to hear. I'm also on an Air 1 and am fairly stymied sometimes, especially in FabFilter land....

Pencil gets here Tueaday. I expect that to be the final crack in the dam that's blocked my chart topping album I've been experimenting with for the past twenty years.

  • Glad to hear it. I've got the Air 2, and my stuff sometimes gets up near 20 tracks, but usually somewhere between 10-15. I never really need to freeze tracks with the 2 gigs of RAM. The only CPU problems I've encountered have been caused by iOS and app bugs, not the hardware. Cheers @boone51. Enjoy the ride, and I'll be looking for that chart topping album right below mine, lol.

Yes, I'll be interested to hear how someone with an Air 2 finds the new thing. Whether the difference is sufficient etc. Tempting to get a 2 now, but then am also half holding out for the big bamboo...

  • The only problem I've had with my Air2 on load, is when I forget to restart my iPad before doing a new Auria session.

iOS needs to have a better way of making sure that all IAA's close after you close a session.

Ghost apps kill any chance of changing sessions on the fly live. So for now 2gb is not enough.

  • Isnt that a little like saying that since your car wont turn off the single gas tank in it isn't enough?

Not really. It's like saying that while IAA still has either problems in itself or how it's being utilised, the iPad needs restarting often to save resources being used inappropriately. More resources mean this is less likely to happen.

In the situation I describe I.e. Switching sessions live, resources become very scarce with the IAA ghost problem.

Besides, most people would see a car that won't switch off as a bit of a problem, don't you think?

  • Yes, I agree that a car shutting off and iOS not turning iaa apps off correctly as a problem. But in neither case should the gas tank nor the ram be considered bottlenecks. Totally agree that the problem should be fixed, but wouldn't consider more ram or another gas tank to be the correct solution at all.

And I'm not defending the 2gb ram decision, let me be clear. I think that's just stupid. But again, I don't see this particular case as being a valid reason why there should be more ram. Not trying to be contentious with you, please understand. I just disagree that more ram is the answer for this particular case.

  • Johnny Goodyear you DO know that besides the Aurio Pro manual, there is a second manual dedicated solely to the plug ins? (Fab Filter). Thank you, Rim

You could turn it the other way around. Why give a sports car a 1.2 litre tank. My Air 2 copes ok, but even with its processor, the Ram can limit how many apps can run.

Soup up the processor in the 9.7 Pro and that limit makes even less sense.

Fair point. I'll acknowledge that, no problem. Would like the issue fixed the right way to really be able to gauge the true limitations of the ram limit, but if 2 was restrictive on the Air 2 (outside of the ghost thing) then it would only be exacerbated on the pro. You're right.

    @boone51
Out of interest, how many fabfilter synths / plugins can you run on your new machine ? Is the CPU really making a huge difference ?
My reason for asking is I may upgrade from my Air 2, with particular reference to these plugins.

  • I'm setting up a test this afternoon to find out, @Igneous1. I'll report back what I find. This isn't my typical workflow, so it takes some focus for me, but already planned to push her tonight. I'll let you know.

That will be cool to see some real life use.

Remember the days when nothing we did was "half"? Happy I had them, but glad they're, for the most part, in the past

  • Well it's still the second fast IPAD on the market. I would like to know how many fabfilter plugs it can run also. Hmm!

  • Any more thoughts on this one, regarding it's CPU 'horsepower' versus the Air 2 ?

    Cheers.

  • @boone51 !! How was that test? I have been waiting for so many afternoons already...

I want a new machine, and I'm not sure I should go for the 12.9" or the 9.7" monster. It's for live performance porpoises, I want power, but also I don't want to be hidden under a idevice on stage!

  • 12.9 would be my choice.

  • I have both air 2 and pro 9.7.
Pro is significantly faster in my experience, zips along actually. Definitely an upgrade I will enjoy for some time.

  • Apologies to everyone for the long delay. Had a back problem that has derailed me for a couple of weeks now. Will try to get back to this tomorrow when I will finally have some free time again. Thanks for your patience.

  • Hey @boone51, first of all, your back! Don't worry about the damned ipad test, I can buy one of them and test it at home, if it was not the right, I can return it. A back can't be returned! Salud!

Clear RAM Trick could save you some time over restarting:
http://kymatica.com/Software/AUM look under IAA nodes fail to initialize

Curious if anyone's tested whether IAA ghosts show up in battery shaming screen in settings app, or do they hide from that too?

I do believe they do. Apps I know have been ghosting seem to show use as background battery use.

  • ^ I too believe they do. Recently had Modrum show up as being in the background for 37 hours, despite the fact I've barely used it.

  • I had Glitch1 show up as using battery life for 1.8 hours and I haven't used it in months, have obviously restarted my ipad during that time...I remember it did that red 'recording' notification out of nowhere, with the app definitely not open, which is why i ended up looking at the battery usage.

  • Pretty satisfied Air 1 owner here with no plans to upgrade anytime soon, but glad to hear the marked improvement. If anything changes, sounds like a proper upgrade...and may dissuade me from upgrading to a macbook down the road.

  • Ok, I'm back. No pun intended. Anyway, I'm not the best one to perform this kind of test, let me just throw that out there right away. Anthony Davis would be far more qualified than myself to perform this kind of test. But that being said, I can't break it. I have ten tracks, each with pro q 2 individually attached to them. I'm running Timeless 2 on four of them at the same time, I have convolution applied to six of the tracks, and I just can't make it crackle at me. It's so much better than my Air 1, and honestly, that was probably enough machine for my needs. But now, it's like there is no limit. And I know this will be met with some laughs, but I cannot emphasize enough how awesome it is using the Apple Pencil with Auria and other apps (but especially Auria). It's really the only way I could see using Auria anymore. I always struggled with the busy interface, especially in plugins like Timelsss 2, and now it's super simple with the pencil (poet and didn't know it? Maybe).

Anyway, I'm beyond happy with it. But now I lay down a challenge to you guys. Give me a project that will crush it. Share your Auria project (or anything else) setup with me that brings your iPad to its knees and let's really test it. I'm down if you are.

  • No frozen tracks in my tests by the way...
