Griffin Studio Connect thoughts?
Local shop is clearing out griffin docks, I can one for my 30pin & another for my lightning iPad for a very reasonable price.
I'm tempted by:
Intergrated stand
Charges iPad
MIDI port
Are these a good solution?
Interested in any thoughts.
I have a Iconnect midi4+ which takes the audio over cable but I'm finding I prefer to use my iPads without turning on my pc these days so these may be a great solution
Comments
I had one, it shorted out after a month. I'm now with a Focusrite itrack dock.
I have had mine for a couple years now and it has been rock solid for me. I use it less now that I picked up an ILoud but it is still used to charge my iPad and record my. Kong M50. For portability and results at a great price you should jump on the deal.
I have one. Don't use it much but it's always done what it's supposed to do and done it reliably.
Thanks all, my main thing is power. That's why I love my iconnect4+. Sounds like a good way to go, I'm buying a Roland drum head (finally!) to use it with impaktor. This way it covers the audio input and power, I think I'll just leave the Lightning iPad on the Iconnect for now.
I've enjoyed using the 30 pin w/a lightning adapter on my iPad Air 1 for about two years. Picked it up on sale for around $40 US. Like you, I was looking for an audio/midi solution that held/powered the iPad. Works great for me
@mireko_2, Same for me, except I have used the StudioConnect 30 pin w/a lightning adapter for an iPad Air 2 and now the iPad Pro. Works great with high quality audio. I have been thinking about adding an iConnect2 to use a few of my USB only MIDI controllers.
I own a StudioConnect 30-pin ($16 on Amazon, couldn't say no) as well as an iConnectMIDI2+, and I don't even bother with the iConnectMIDI except as a generic USB-MIDI interface. The StudioConnect (+lightning adapter), for whatever reason, allows me to run Korg iM1 at lower latencies AND more complex patches without dropouts, whereas the iConnect sputters out if I try to use iM1 Combi patches. I'm almost thinking of picking up a second StudioConnect because it's so cheap.
i just bought one of these for $16.00. Will come Thursday. Can't wait to give it a try. I use the iriffport now, which I really like. This will be a nice back up, or I can leave one at work, and one at home, so when I'm on call, I have it there for me.
@dtaki . Funny. Have had a very similar experience as you. StudioConnect gets much more action in my studio than iConnectMIDI. It's just simpler to use and it works reliably.
I am glad to hear that, can't wait to get it.
I've been using that same model for over 2 years now, very happy with it
EDIT: Just saw I already said that about 5 comments up. I should get out more ...
Combining a bargain 30 pin StudioConnect with an apple lightning adapter is just about the most cost effective solution to having your iOS device interfaced while charging.
Wait, it charges thru the Lightning adapter??
Two years ago I opted for the Behringer iStudio over the Griffin, I think both were listed at $99. I'm quite happy with it and use it a lot, but a very cheap backup interface is tempting, especially knowing you've had a good experience with it.
(No comment on the other...)
Yup. All night long you can record and charge at the same time.
Yup, but it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy hearing you say it again. And like Toz said........ Knowing you had a good experience, well I guess that's why I get all warm and fuzzy. Reassured...... lol.....
So....Do I need the Griffin Utility app I downloaded for this thing to work? It appears I do, from what I have read. Just not sure how it works, it's an app, somehow works with the griffin hardware, and I can use it to play my guitar through bias fx and JamUp and stuff? hmmmmm......
Also, I heard a few people comment on plugging a guitar in through the 1/4 port in the back, being rather noisy? Anyone experience that?
I never needed an app, just plugged it in and set sail. I run all my external gear (vocals, bass, guitars) through an old Yamaha mixer, then run my stereo out via an adapter into the StudioConnect. I haven't experienced any noise issues via input or output. Hope this helps!
@High5denied - the Griffin app is only for updating the firmware.
K, thanks guys.
I have run my guitar directly into the 1/4 inch port on the back; and through Amplitube, Jamup Pro, Bias and Flying Haggis apps with no problems. The input gain control on the side of the StudioConnect helps.
Great! Thanks @bsantoro
I liked mine, but unfortunately it gave up after a couple of months.
I have a 30 pin StudioConnect that works well with an old iPad 3. I hooked up a newer Air 2 with the 30 pin to lightning adapter and had trouble with audio glitches and noise in both the headphone jack and the RCA outs. After I downloaded the "Griffin Utility" app from the App Store and upgraded the firmware on the StudioConnect (I also rebooted my Air 2) everything worked perfectly for both the older iPad 3 and the newer Air 2. Maybe all I needed to do was reboot the Air 2 but I'm sure it didn't hurt to upgrade the unit to the latest firmware.
I also just bought a new 30 pin StudioConnect off Amazon for $16 as a second backup unit that will permanently sit on top of an acoustic (or digital) piano. So, even if the unit fails electronically at some point, it can still be utilized as a cheap and serviceable $16 iPad stand.
I just got mine yesterday. 16 bucks. I think it is well made, and for being plastic it is very solid.
I have the Griffin Utility app, on my ipad. How does one upgrade the firmware on the StudioConnect? Drawing a complete bland on this one. lol.
So I tried it with Bias FX, ToneStack, and JamUp last night. Head phones plugged into the head phone jack in front.
BIas didn't sound right to me. No noise or feedback, just very delayed and "not Full" Deff. some latency. SO I switched to ultra low latency mode in Bias FX, and that helped the latency, but the sounds/fx/presets still sounded thin, weak.........I didn't try plugging into the line out/headphone jack thingy in the back, maybe that would provide better sound?
ToneStack and JamUp sounded greawt. Just like they do through my iriffport. BIas did not. Disappointed , cuz I mostly use Bias FX. But, I have my iriffport which works very well. But this thing charges my ipad too. SO I planned on using it sometimes to record or play live, or whatever. But it sounds not so good with Bias, but good with TS and JamUP.... Why????
Sorry for my late reply... been on the road.
I think the Griffin Utility app will only do its thing if your device needs to be updated. All you have to do is launch the app with your iPad connected to StudioConnect. It will call home to determine whether or not your device needs the upgrade. Looks like your device may already be operating under the latest firmware. The app should display the firmware version of your unit after you run it. If I'm not mistaken the latest firmware is v2.4.3. I am no where near my home and my StudioConnect so I have to go with my memory of the version#. Also, I used the Griffin Utility app on a StudioConnect I bought a year ago which evidently needed the firmware upgrade. The new unit from Amazon will be delivered on Monday so I'll get to check it for a firmware upgrade at that time. Could be that the firmware in these newer units has already been updated.
As for Bias FX not working properly - Could there be a setting that is mucking things up? I'll try Bias FX on my unit when I get home on Monday. Cheers!
Thanks for the reply!
I figured it out. The little gain knob on the right side of the unit needed to be turned up. I didn't know it affected the sound. I turned it up and it sounds great, normal to me.. Too much gain and it distorts quite a lot. I never had a device like this, my scarlet doesn't have a gain knob, my iriff port I just plug and play no knobs.
Anyway, this is quite amazing for 16.00. I like it.
Anyone have a link to that utility app? I'd never even heard of it, but since my unit's over 2 years old, it might benefit from the firmware upgrade.
Searched the App Store, the web, and Griffin's site - only thing I could find was a Griffin Utility app for their Beacon universal remote.
I think that utility app works for several of their other hardware units.
Thank you for that tip Upon closer inspection, I found reviews for the beacon Utility app from StudioConnect owners, so it appears one size fits all.
