  • Was wondering the same. Was gone all of yesterday too.

  • just:
    Web Server's Default Page

  • yea kind of blew me away, with no warning

  • Probably a technical thing. He's a British guy now based in France - I'm on the mailing list and there was an email mailer just 3 days ago - business as usual. It ended like this:

"Anyway, until next time, have a great week, and get some music made…

    Best wishes,

    John"

I'd expect it back online shortly, unless we hear anything dramatic.

  • John has noted over at iPM that it's just a server issue. Glad to know that :+1:

  • Apparently 123-REG LIMITED hosts the musicappblog site. They had a bit of difficulty today.

    http://www.bbc.com/news/technology-36072240

Web hosting firm 123-reg has accidentally deleted an unspecified number of its customers' websites. "We can conclude that the issues faced have resulted in some data loss for some customers," the firm admitted.

    Ouch.

  • Hope everything goes back to normal. It's the only iOS music related site I visit regularly (and this forum of course)

  • Like & respect Johns views, & he's sensible in his judgement on apps

  • Shame. The only app review site I have any faith in.

Surely there's a server backup of his site in a fairly recent state that could be resorted by the provider isn't there?

well, not if they deleted it

keeping my fingers crossed that he can restore as much as possible

  • Unless he made a manual backup locally (recently)

Most hosts will be running a virtual instance, which by default due to the nature of virtualisation will be backed up and reloadable. I’d be highly surprised if it simply doesn’t exist any more, in some quite recent form or another.

Talking of which, those that have their own websites, who is recommended for hosting these days? (Not 1-2-3-reg, thanks).

  • This is what John said when I asked him:

My web hosting company managed to go into melt-down on Saturday..... they are in the process of trying to recover things but it sounds like it was, by all accounts, a pretty major ****-up. Still waiting to see if it is more efficient to just hold tight and let them do their stuff (while I get on with some work) or whether I have to spend a few days doing my own techie stuff and getting the site up and running elsewhere even if only on a temporary basis.... Such is high-tech life..... :)

  • Remarkably sanguine.

  • Yeah, what an awesome blog, that is.. Everything so in depth!

  • John is the best app reviewer in the business, no question. Hope he's able to get everything sorted soon.

  • What sucks even more is that often I'll be google searching about something related to ios sound stuff or ios apps, and very frequently a link to one of John's page links come up with likely the info I'm looking for, but now the links are dead. :(

What kind of hosting provider doesn't have backups and mirrored redundancy for their sites?

  • Damn and I thought I was the best app reviewer in the business :p Joking of course ;)

  • Hi All.... Thanks for the expresions of concern..... As mentioned above, just hosting woes..... I'm hopeful that a full restore of the site is going to be taken care of by my (soon to be ex-?) hosting company.... But I do have a manula backup I can resort to if required.... anyway, sitting tight, getting some music made, and waiting for the hosting companies techies to do their thing..... Thanks again and best wishes, John

    You're a hero. Good luck.

  • Best wishes for a speedy and more robust solution @JohnMAB !

  • Something up again - Safari not loading page because "too many redirects occurred".

  • that's my favorite ios news and review site,i'm glad he's still there.Keep up the good work!

You'd think so. I have four sites with 123, and cut never occurred to me that in the event of a disaster backup wouldn't make things right. But MAB has been down for a long time. It's so much trouble to move domains, but now it's got me thinking I might have to.

https://www.cmscritic.com/123-reg-deletes-customer-websites/ - look at the article this person links to before the fold (which he wrote shortly before this loss fiasco), although the author seems to be furiously against 123-reg anyway. Perhaps he’s correct.

This is a relief. Can I ask (@MusicInclusive), what is iPM?

  • 123reg have a bad reputation for hosting . I have some domains registered with them but wouldn't trust them with my website

  • Yes it was a great blog ,one of the better with iosmars and the soundtestroom, i dont why he can't stop giving news and review without deleting all the blog and website.

  • Hi All.... just a further update.... While I'll spare you all the gory details, I am making progress. Setting up a new website/blog is a few minutes work as any of you will know who have done it.... Retrieving it from a backup is not quite so straightforward, especially if the site of of a reasonable size..... Anyway, I have the backup working 'locally'... and now in the process of re-establishing it on the live server.... There may still be some bumps to be ironed out over the next day or two but fingers crossed. Best wishes, John
