Apps that make me wish I had an iPad Pro now
So I've been doing pretty good getting started with iOS audio by focusing on universal apps that I can enjoy on the iPhone 6s Plus now, but will hopefully be great on iPad as well. Notables in that group are:
LOOPIMAL (For my kid, please go give your 99¢ and then ask very very nicely for Link so I will one day be able to jam with him)
Loopy HD (Can't wait to see the mythical beast that is masterpiece edition)
SoundPrism (Electro quietly went universal, so I completed the bundle:)
Gadget and iDS-10 (thank you KORG for going universal just as I came along!)
AUM (If this was in order of importance it would be first, but it's in order bought, can't say enough about the prowess of this dev)
Blamsoft Bundle and Viking (I don't know a moog from a muggle, but I like the sound, really puts the AU in AUM;)
Elastic Drums (I'm going to make this make cool sounds, I'm going to make this make cool sounds, I'm going to...)
Sunvox Sunvox Sunvox (quirkier than Beetlejuice, more tools than Batman, --crazy-- misunderstood as Birdman)
Maybe I should just focus on those, since I'm new and can't actually make anything worth sharing yet, but all the cool kids are using...
Samplr (This one alone makes me want an iPad, truly makes an instrument of samples)
SECTOR (Why are all the cool sample slicers iPad only)
Shoom (Alternate tunings, has Wendy Carlos seen this yet?)
Patterning (Beauty and the beat)
Fugue Machine (You too could go to town)
Skram (It's early yet, but I've seen it used very effectively)
Mersenne (I don't think Elastic Drums is ever going to make these sounds for me, and they are really nice)
iM1(more really nice sounds, it's rumored you can stuff this into Gadget iPhone, but you'll need an iPad
Different Drummer (I don't know exactly what this is yet, but I want to)
I want to hold out for the big dog, but can anyone verify these apps will look good on iPad Pro? I found with the 6s Plus that apps specifically supporting the bigger screen are much more pleasant on it, is this true of the iPad Pro? Do apps that aren't updated get letterboxed (wasted screen space, like pre iphone 5 apps), or just zoomed (just bigger, but no better resolution, much less better layout, like iphone 5 apps on iPhone 6 and Plus)? If none of those apps take advantage of iPad Pro, I could get an iPad mini 4 sooner, but now I'm just rationalizing...

I'm in the same boat, I'm currently using an iPad 2 pad air 16 gig that I paying $26 per month for, but I was in the Verizon store yesterday and looked at the iPad Pro and say that there is a huge jump in processor speed for 30$ per month but the bad thing is 1qI would be paying for 2 iPads, It would be quite irresponsible but I'm so very tempted, I still owe $400 on this one....very tempting
Who's your favorite songwriter? Imagine them in the same position. What would they do?
Feed the babies first.
Not sure which of these are optimized for the Pro, but I know Different Drummer isn't. If you have specific questions about DD, I am pretty familiar with it, so feel free to pm me.
He's just being modest. He has a Phd in Different Drummer which is why we call him Doctor Junkie....
Lol @JohnnyGoodyear ...it might better be Doctor Different though
All the new 64-bit only apps are making me want to upgrade this non-participatory 4th gen but I am inept when it comes to saving money.
Another one for the iPad list
zMors Modular
Apparently this allows loading AUs as modules within the patches you're making. That sounds fun
Patterning sale too tempting, pre bought. Should have picked up Shoom too, guess that'll have to wait til I actually get a new iPad.
The only app I have that's optimised for the Pro is Auria Pro. Patterning is stated to be in the new update but I can't notice the difference.
I have many of the other apps you mention & they all run perfectly well on my mini 4. The only advantage with the Pro is the added power.....unless optimised like Auria, some apps look a bit odd on the larger screen.
Disagree.
It's the Moog 15 that is really making the iPad Pro a hard trigger not to pull
That is THE app that makes me want a new iPad. My iPad Air 1 is starting to show its age, but I can manage it enough to not NEED a new device. But, Model 15...
Must say I was in exactly your boat (Air1 wise) and wouldn't have gotten around to buying the bigger bugger until year's end probably, but was grateful to be gifted it for a birthday present etc. I am still using my Air 1, albeit now very stripped down of course which seems to help and also focused on a simpler workflow aspect/apps for which it's still a terrific machine.
However, I reach for it rarely now and perhaps that's the proof. Should be said that, amongst it all, I consider Auria Pro the centerpiece of my stumbling work and it's entirely night and day in every respect on the larger thing. BUT I have also rediscovered (as mentioned elsewhere already) a number of apps that while they may not have been yet 'updated' for the 12 inch are suddenly now very usable. I have also given up watching movies on the old laptop...
I suppose what I'm getting at or trying to share is that it has been a great addition without reservation. Often I have a feeling with some much anticipated object that it's 'good and all, but...', you know, that slightly churlish sense of disappointment. Not an ounce with this larger object.
For all of that, we're in June already and maybe those who wait, through choice or finance, might see a benefit to so doing upon the next round of Apple 'upgrades/releases'.
Yeah, I think I can hold out until the new model of iPad Pro is released. I'll either buy that one, or scoop up a "used" current model when everyone else trades theirs in. An exercise in patience, with a little dash of "let's see what you can do with what you've already got". I usually record my songs track-by-track, so I don't really push everything too hard. But I'm still starting to get some crackles and pops using even this simple method.
That's great to hear JGY. In addition to Auria etc have you been doing any drawing/painting/note-taking or the like with the new big guy? If so and you had also been doing that on your Air 1 (my current model) is the Pro again setting the bar?
I am a poor but enthusiastic graphics-botherer. I find the Big Boy so much better for drawing APART from the fact that it is now more obvious than ever that I'm rubbish. Perhaps I should be grateful. Saved me a lot of time
However, I am more tenacious with video editing and it's a made a h-u-g-e difference.
As regards note-taking, I am using it far more than I ever did the Air. Perhaps this is partly also to do with the fact that I was given the Apple keyboard, which is lovely because it requires no sort of power and seems sturdy etc.
For the record (and perhaps again as a result of my lack of talent) I was also provided with an Apple pencil which, to be totally honest, I would never shell out money for myself. Just doesn't seem to do that much more/better than my five dollar stylus PLUS I live in fear of breaking it or losing it.
Another negative (in a reverse way) is while I used to play video games I haven't for many years, until now. Things look and work great on this thing....generally that's about it: Things look and work great on this thing.
Interesting...the pen support is the thing that tempts me to get one ... maybe it's not as good as they're saying it is...
Moog 15 and drawing apps would be the reasons for me getting the Pro . To be honest though I'm not sure I'd enjoy the larger format - last night I was using my Air 2 / Audioshare to listen back to a few tracks I'd recorded and the thing kept slipping off my knees - a bigger thing might be even more unwieldy .
I have a friend who gonna be a King! Which country/nation then?
No wonder we met first time at Burger King.
@JohnnyGoodyear I hadn't thought about video editing but see how that could be lovely within Pro real estate. For anything pen-to-paper (i.e.: "pencil" to glass) I marvel from afar at that fine tip compared to the finger-painting bloat of a typical stylus and even the latter has been a big part of why I love the iPad (art endeavors that is).
I've heard others speak of the joy in attaching one of those triangular pencil-grips to The Pencil as much for holding it in hand as for being able to set it down and not have the thing roll away. The more I think about it the more the Pro ensemble becomes an Object Of Desire.
Best review I've read of the Pro yet. x!
Oops.... I forgot Model 15. Definitely better on the 12.9" screen than the Mini.
I am the most common of commoners, but made a deliberate point when entering into my marital contract to specify funny and generous as non-negotiable features. One of my few wise choices...
My wife bought me an iPad Pro 12.9 too. It wasn't a surprise though. I lost my Air 2 (work reclaimed it) and I refused to even look at my old 4. I think she couldn't take much more of the pining. Anyway, my favourite app now is forScore.
I'm very happy with my iPad Pro 12.9. Had it as soon as it came out, it was such an upgrade from my previous iPad2. I have the Pencil too, and it is great for art apps, Procreate especially. I have yet to experience any real limitations, whereas I was always coming across issues on my previous iPad.
I gotta get me a new wife.
Just kidding, dear!
Scalable on-screen keyboards are more usable on the big boy, imo.
Fluxpad, straight to the top! Well maybe after Samplr
Notion's handwriting capabilities are only usable on both iPad Pro with the pencil, in my opinion, as there's pressure sensitivity you can write lighter or firmer depending on your style and it improves accuracy a lot, on a regular iPad with a stylus it's not that great (it sucks using the fingers)
That's the first app I've used that made me wish I had a bigger screen
Maybe they'll introduce iPad Pro Mega Deluxe 17" tomorrow as one more thing?
I think I'm done maintaining this list. Different Drummer went universal so I bought it. During previous sales I picked up Patterning, Fugue Machine, and Mersenne in anticipation of a future new iPad, but honesty they're just gathering dust on the old one. Skram may or may not be stagnating, regardless I'll revisit it if it goes universal. As much as I like Audioshare and AUM I'm not buying SECTOR if it's not universal. During the recent Black Friday sale I bought iM1 since it at least can be side loaded to Gadget iPhone (still holding out hope they'll make it universal too). Also bought Shoom, since I know I'd want that day one on a new iPad. However it's already gathering dust. Which is why I'm done. Not buying any more apps that aren't universal yet. A new iPad is still on the wish list, but with the way the health care industry is turning the screws in the US I effectively just received a pay cut, so new toys aren't high on the list. Much more likely to buy a new laptop I can actually use to write software with. When I ever buy an iPad I'll get Samplr if it still runs on whatever iOS it comes with, or has finally gotten the mythical update (fingers crossed)
