I miss something where I can move the snare a few ms infront or after the beat, so I get a groove...
I liked the little 'Kick' icons you used to have in Cubase for nudging midi notes left and right. Nothing has that functionality on iOS that I have found
Disable the Quantize/Grid in Gadget and you can freely move stuff at 1/480ppqn resolution when zoomed in
Hi thanks everyone- I will check out your suggestions.
By a groovebox I mean- synths- drums- and a multitrack sequencer all built in. I would call Gadget a groovebox- it's at the top of my list.
No I'm not- I know there is a few- but I was trying to highlight- relative to the amount of synthsthat are available-(though after this thread- there are several more that I thought). I was also meaning good ones (that you would put your reputation on- sort of thing)
I have been staying away from this- I can't see many tutorials on it and I get easily confused . What would you recommend as a start-off point for attempting this. Is there a sequecer that is easy to programme with knobs on it that will automate- and automatically seek out- the Cutoff and Rezo (and all the rest of it) of a variety of synths?
Skram, Beathawk, Infinite Looper, Xenon, Medly, and I wouldn't give up on Oscilab - it's a unique beast well worth the time. Kind of like the "Different Drummer" of groove box thingies, it can reward you with sounds you just won't get anywhere else + drums
Hmm ... For a sequencer with automation for a lot of synths, MIDIsteps, Genome and if you like old school knobs and sliders, MIDIsequencer, perhaps?
+1 ........ That would be a dream come true if Roland done this. Maybe bombardment to Roland for this one?
Emailing them that is.....
Oh...email! I'll call off the sortie then.
I was thinking gadget might be more groove boxy and immediate if for example, each track was locked to its scene. So in scene 1, you have only scene 1's tracks visible in the mixer, then you switch to scene 2 and only scene 2s tracks are visible. This way you could create a scene, copy it to another scene and in the copy simply alter the tracks however you want without messing up the original tracks or having to keep adding tracks horizintally. Am I crazy?
This may be useful: "MIDI Implementation of SOUND Canvas for iOS is designed in conformity to SC-8820" -from the Sound Canvas for IOS FAQ.
The manual for the SC-88 is here: https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=3&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjyjdWxm6_MAhVCLB4KHVS4C24QFggmMAI&url=http://cdn.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/SC-88PRO_OM.pdf&usg=AFQjCNHV9yZ5hx7SsYMMrUSS_6A0elP2Ig&sig2=nYWer2OQsHejiZE6F1iktA
Thanks folks- plenty to think about- I had no idea that Image Line Groove Machine Mobile even existed- It looks great to me (apart from no Audiobus etc) - yet not much seems to get said about it- and very few youtube videos. Any more thoughts on this one?
Pretty certain Image Line anounced Groove Machine would not get any further updates.
I asked them on their Facebook page why there is no info on the next version..... got no response.
http://modstep.net
This has temptes for most most iOS synths as well many hardware synths already bundled
Use this with link along side something like iSpark or impc pro all mixed into AUM and there is your modular grovebox. It's not complicated but some apps play better in IAA than others
PM me if you want to know more.
This. Modstep, seriously.
There's tons of fun stuff to run inside Modstep that stretch you in various directions but Modstep is It. Even without AUM, AB etc.
Great with Sunvox, Beathawk, Stroke Machine...Praxis Beats! (Kind of a Breaktweaker for iOS)
Thanks very much for that- I will have a go at working my way through some of the suggestions made for standalones- then perhaps have a look at Modstep. I am also slowly coming to the conclusion that I really ought to be putting more effort into getting the most out of the apps that I actually use at the moment as well- instead of thinking 'This isn't sounding good- I must need another app' ... so I hope the offer isn't time barred
GM Mobile is a really good groove box, they released it, did one maintenance update. Export to audio copy is the only way to get audio out. But the UI and performance recording and editing is superb. The synth is really very capable with very well though out controls. I've not seen a better Piano roll on iOS.
They also created a VST version of it so you could create a tune on iOS, copy the file to your pc, load it in the VST version and away you go in your daw.
What they said at the time was that it was really a test bed for the iOS/Android UI design and integration possibilities with FL Studio.
Since then they have been locked in a bunker somewhere creating FL Studio Mobile 3. And the screenshots they have previously released for this definitely show the relationship to GM Mobile.
I have been very patiently waiting for FLM3 as if GM Mobile is anything to go by, it will be an amazingly awesome piece of kit.
I made this with GM Mobile, pretty much in a single sitting, with no crashes, hair pulling or anything, just plain old grooving. A little repetitive maybe, but hey its a groove box.
Thanks- that has encouraged me to have a go with it- Cheers
I wonder if FLM3 will ship before I expire.
i'm currently developing GoneBox.....
Inspired by Reaktor GoBox. Fully midi mappable , user defined sample map with live or programmed sample selection, full directional, start end and length control over sequencer with midi mappable loop brace. full live parameter record and editor for all parameters (think elektron p locks). Lock to scale and key. Figure style note generators with mappable rhythm selector. Individual outs for 5 drum tracks, bassline, 2 leads and stab track. LINK straight out of the gate and intelligent randomizers everywhere......it's a live performance monster.
well, actually i'm not.....but is anyone ? please ?
I love Gobox, Elektron hardware, and live performances can't wait.
I dare you to pitch this to the noize dev.
I really like this feature also. This is implemented nicely in ModStep in the step sequencer. It doesnt shift the notes in milliseconds but fractions of a beat (I pushed for this addition in beta) down to 1/32 of a beat. In drum mode each percussion instrument can be shifted independently and in note mode the whole pattern shifts. Nice!
The ammount of times ModStep has been mentioned here is key I would say but for me Gadget is the best groovebox.
I didn't realise you could do this in modstep....How ?

For me the thing that makes GM Mobile better is the performance aspects, which is what makes a groovebox what it is over and above a sequencer with built in sounds.
The playing surface is far superior to Gadget, especially on an iPad Mini screen, where in gadget the controls are far too small or fiddly for the most part.
On top of this when you 'perform' a tune in GrooveMachine all the actions are recorded as events that you can then go back and edit easily in a timeline. These actions include changing scenes, turning patterns on and off, all synth and mixer controls, it also has built in stutter performance effect.
Just my preference I guess.
GM Mobile is not planned for further development which is a real shame, I just hope that all they learnt from it makes its way into FLM3.
For now, its Modstep and assorted AU/IAA's for my groovebox needs, until I can afford a Novation Circuit that is
does groove machine have sample import?
Yes through audio copy, doesn't work well with audio copy app though
I quit using Groove Machine when it started mysteriously altering my synth patches. Too bad cuz I enjoyed it up til then, but maybe I was hallucinating and it doesn't really do this?
Some would pay good money for random patch generators
In the third window, the step sequencer has this little Rosseta of fun in the lower left part of the screen. You reveal the wheel by clicking the round button between the two arrows to the right of the active steps button. Select the rhythm part (or note part) you want to shift and click left or right. It's not very easy to see the result for 'fractional shifting' because the step sequencer only displays in whole steps but when you switch to the piano roll view you will see you have shifted it as expected. Hope that's clear, if not we should get Jacob to do a quick vid
