Me too. I’d like to hear a demo of some of its more creative abilities. Also, can someone confirm that any parameter can me modulated with velocity, and the amount of which adjusted both positively and negatively?

Almost everything can indeed have positive or negative velocity control, pop up menu stuff like filter type being the exceptions. I have been using this one quite a bit today and no crashes so far. I'm on iPad mini 3 with iOS 10 so can't comment on stability with iOS 11 or with other models.

I was under the impression that Attack was neglected by Waldorf. It looks very impressive, but I don't want to spend $19.99 on an app that will never get updated. (Its last update was in November, so.... Maybe it's perfect? But no Link, right?)

Your post had me thinking I had missed a new version. It was updated in November, unfortunately that was November 2015!

EDIT: Oops I didn't realise this was an old thread from 2016, please ignore my comment!

I only use Link enabled stuff for drums these days, wish there was a way to donate an app as I have plenty that get little to no use that somebody else might appreciate.

Awesome info, thanks. I really think it’s worth a go for me but I’m worried being that I’m on iPad Pro. I guess I could always pick up an iPad Air 2. I’m seriously looking for a drum synth like this for long-term professional live use. The Nord Drum we use is great, but limited to 6 channels/voices and isn’t nearly as powerful in terms of modulation options. Plus Stroke Machine looks like a joy to program whereas Nord Drum has only one knob!

If you're just planning to use it just for this app and will be controlling it via midi a used iPad Air 1 or mini 2 16gb would easily be enough and you can find these for not much money. Even cheaper if you find one with a small crack on the screen. You will be able to run it into some effects apps on those devices with no problem.

  • @soundshaper you May be able to save yourself some $ by emailing Franke (he is a pretty sweet dude, and may be able to sort out the issue with an update...)

  • @Littlewoodg
Have tried with a fresh boot, and on different ipads. In fact it’s only the ipad pro that crashes randomly as it seems, approx every 5 minutes. I didn’t encounter this problem on an older ipad air, so probably the crashes are related to the GUI glitches on the pro.I wrote the dev about it and will report if I find some answers. About the other GUI issue that was mentioned (a crash when touching empty space on the screen?), has this been solved already in a previous? I can’t seem to reproduce that crash on the ipad air, and I’m wondering if the ipad pro issue could be related...

Yep that one (touch an empty space = crash) did get sorted (on Air 2 and earlier at least). It may still live on the Pro’s...I’ve heard of other great apps (Virsyn Addictive Pro and afew others) that are buggy on the Pro models. Devs end up having to optimize for 4+ different devices these days, and g-d help them if they want to go universal

  • Just got a message from Wolfram, saying he’s aware of the ipad Pro GUI problem and working on it. I must say the sonic quality of this app amazes me. To me there isn’t another drum synthesis app with a similar transient and bass definition ( and control). I think I’ve tried them all, except the waldorf attack app which doesn’t seem to be actually supported.

Walfram, Waldorf... sorry, which app are you saying sounds great?

I’m sorry, was referring to previous communication. Stroke machine, app from Wolfram Franke.

Ha. No apology necessary. I’m just being slow. Will check it out!

I may be wrong but I think both stroke machine and attack drums have the same creator. Glad to hear that people with Pro models will be able to use this app in the future. Any chance you could put forward the case for Ableton Link support if you are speaking with him again?

Yep the VST Attack drums (90s?) was Franke and Stroke Machine is Franke too. The iOS Attack was another coder updating the original VST

Thanks for the info, I was thinking it was a bit strange for one coder to put in the work of developing two quite similar apps! Looks like stroke machine will be getting some attention and hopefully Link support will happen also.

  • I’ll be purchasing Stroke Machine if it is updated. Looks so fun to hook up to the electronic drum kit.

Are all the demos for it just bad, or am I bad at finding good demos? Seems like they just load basic 909 sounds and don’t get into its responsiveness or expressiveness.

You can definitely get some great sounds from it and I think it will work better as a sound source triggered via midi than using the pattern based approach which is not great to navigate. I don't see many (any) others out there triggering iOS stuff with midi drums so it might be hard to get proper feedback for what you want to do.

It looks like one of those apps where spending a bit of time will be required, I will say it's quite easy to get extreme sounds from and most likely you will want a limiter after for safety reasons!

  • I just dug Stroke Machine out again having recently done a deep dive into drum synthesis and my god this thing creates some seriously amazing drum sounds. I can get a great techno/house bass drum just out of the basic synthesis. No compression, no distortion - just a couple of envelopes, one oscillator and some noise. And the crack module, my god the crack module...

And while the interface colors are still eye poppingly awful (and the fact that you have to dial in all the numbers is really irritating), it's actually doesn't seem to bother me any more. The layout makes sense, it has really good midi/modulation controls (you want velocity to control the filter, an envelope and FM - no problem) and it sounds amazing.

    Things I wish it had:

    • Ability to just enter a value, rather than having to fight with those horrible dials.
    • Ability to make the synthesis modules (e.g. the envelopes) bigger so they were easier to control.
    • Multiple audio outputs on IAA/Audiobus so I could just feed this directly into BM3's/AUM buses, rather than having to export.
    • Link, obviously.
    • The return of the muted color palate...

I've recently been having a purge of my apps and I thought this was a candidate, but I've promoted it to my first page of 'essential' apps.
