Medley has an update too.
Still kinda like this app. Cross between Auxy and a poor mans gadget.
Comments
I always had a soft spot for this one as well. Now they have added start/stop to the editing screen I will be using much more. Auxy update fixed that issue as well. The hero of the day, ladies and gentlemen are transport controls! Don't forget them!
We also launched a new site: http://medlylabs.com
We're starting to feature songs made by some of users since some were super cool
Keep up the good work! I knew the transport controls during editing were coming but the easy section switching and 32nd notes are an extremely welcome addition! Thank you. One thing about this app, the sounds are very very well crafted. Id pay to see more of them eventually.
Ditto. I keep coming back to this one....
Medly deserves more love here. It's such a wonderful songwriting tool! I made all MIDI data for the synth breaks of this song using Medly and then exporting it to Auria (and then using it to control iPolisixx from Auria):
While we're on the topic, does anyone have a "piano roll workflow"? I used to do the ol, one note at time, linear style piano rolling. Then I messed about doing the structural tone method, ya know, one note/chord per bar, fill it later. Now i just do a sweep of tAps across each bar and adjust as i go. I'm interested to hear how you all like your piano rolling.
The old method for me when working on a piano roll.
Still waiting for the Medly ship to land, so to speak. Much to recommend it, just a nagging feeling of "not quite, almost ..."
It's fun, but no goosebumps. So far.
Thank you, Johnny. As ever, the voice of reason
it looks fun and obviously takes over where auxy iPad left, but for my taste it is
(a) seriously too blue and (b) too enclosed
dark gray background + midi out and this thing becomes seriously interesting
i totally dig their organization of tracks into albums.
It definitely needs midi out. But they could also get away with per section midi export. Right now it exports the entire thing in one file. The piano roll really is one of the best though. Copying and pasting is incredibly fluid and you can see the notes of all your instruments within a section in one piano roll (option in the settings). Really wish there were more scales to restrict it to though. It's still chromatic or major pentatonic. At least give us the full major scale as an option. Bare minimum. I think the developers believe this is not a good idea for some reason. I don't know how to convince them. I still like it though. And I love the blue
@db909
We've avoided adding different scales because of the challenges of changing our engine. We did a lot of work to make hopping between chromatic and major pentatonic smooth and seamless; and changing scales definitely introduces a lot of challenges and a fair bit of work.
That's the compromise we decided on when we originally just targeted new musicians.
As for myself, @baldajan, I think that focusing on usability and workflow for now, you're creating a wonderful songwriting tool. Scales would be a nice addition, but not if the price is to clutter the interface. And, different from Gadget, you're integrating your app with the rest of the iOS music ecosystem, which is really nice. Talking about it, MIDI outs, so Medly can control other synths and write to Auria Pro's sequencer would be nice.
@theconnactic we actually were planning on launching MIDI out with this version. A few things stood in our, particularly time. We're definitely interested in adding it, as every single pro we've talked to has asked, "does it have MIDI out". The other consideration is price - since it underscores our instruments. This point may sound "evil", but we can't keep working on Medly and doing sleepless nights without being able to pay rent.
Indeed, fair point (not evil at all).
@baldajan I get that. Regarding underscoring instruments. Truthfully, compared to other apps with limited built in sounds, yours are really good. Big, fat, and juicy! What of the scales though? I just can't fathom how having a choice to lock the piano roll with even just basic major or minor would be off target. I think there's a lot of people who know basic music theory enough to make good stuff, but don't necessarily have scales memorized enough to be able to compose quickly with a chromatic piano roll. And pentatonic always sounds very....pentatonic. Anyone else wanna weigh in on this?
I comment on the scales thing every time there's any news on Medly.
@baldajan I hear you on income and no doubt you have thought long and hard on this, but be sure that those 'pros' among us who want MIDI out may or may not buy your sounds (I have), and those who are not 'into' MIDI will buy your app (and your sounds) anyway....maybe an IAP?
to be fair.if you added more scales and midi out as an IAP I'd definitely buy it. Dont need more sounds myself since i actually prefer to use other apps and my own hardware synths.
@JohnnyGoodyear we've actually talked about it in the past and recently. Like, should it be a standalone IAP? What should the price be? Should we couple it with the Band Pack, or if you buy 1 pack you unlock MIDI export, or must be purchased as is? Maybe even a subscription! (just kidding, don't worry
).
We'll likely answer those questions soon, but actually writing the code is a different problem.
If you guys want to weigh in on those questions, we'd really appreciate your feedback!
Wait for Audiobus 3......it's gonna make midi magically easy probably.
I'd buy a "pro bundle" with say midi and link for the same price I paid for the band pack
Any sources/links for Audiobus 3 making MIDI magically easier?
@baldajan I'd make midi out its own iap. There's a long tradition of this on music apps anyways. People who want it will pay.
Just lots of teasers on here for example

Actually working MIDI routing and MIDI filters in Audiobus 3.

You might want to speak to the Guv'nor on that one....
The more I fiddle with this the more I like it. It's turning into a very flexible/agile piano-roll writer. I love the ghost notes you can see as regards existing melodies when you're working on something new and am very pleased they added the ability to pause the pattern rather than it running on and on....with a simple midi (or audio) export and working well with AB, I seem to be getting things done. Especially good for point/counterpoint harmony type writing. Worth a look.
As ever, with more playing come more observations, simple as they are:
Learned to my cost that there appears to be no undo; accidentally deleted a bunch of notes and couldn't recreate them, a bit crushing, especially as songs save automatically and thus there is no option to close and re-open etc.
Also, I think I read somewhere you can, but I would really like to be able to copy cells between instruments. Anyone know?
@JohnnyGoodyear There actually is undo & redo - tap with 2 fingers to undo, and tap with 3 fingers to redo.
To copy Sections, tap and hold on a Section and pick Copy, then tap and hold where you want it to go and pick Paste or Paste Linked. Linked sections will stay in sync when you edit any of them.
Brilliant. Well done that man! No idea how I can also extend the octave range? Must be a way I'm guessing, but seems a little limited...thanks again @jayrhynas, very much appreciated.
