  • @JohnnyGoodyear right now there are only 3 octaves per instrument, although you can use the pitch shift effect to shift the instrument up or down an octave

    Thanks again.

As mentioned above, this is proving to be a very good piano roll solution for writing and appreciate the effort the team continue to make.

Still kinda like this app. Cross between Auxy and a poor mans gadget.

My last song was sketched and arranged in Medly. Did that an iPhone 4S, while going home from a client's studio using the subway. When I got home I had a full 3 minute song: only had to export the MIDI to Auria Pro (ended up using the drum loop audio as well), record the live instruments, mix and upload to Soundcloud. I'm addicted to Medly. Hats off to the developers!

  • Very smooth piano roll, I like it.

But midi notes seems to be odd on midi export.

    @baldajan

Drums at -2 octave? Can the midi export have the option to export as tracks rather than 1 file?

  • @SpookyZoo - well, we fixed a few bugs (including one with MIDI - though not yours) in an update coming out soon. Thanks for the heads up on those bugs.

Re multi-file MIDI - we decided against it since MIDI tracks can be easily split up, unlike audio (which would be a much better candidate for mutli-file export).

I'd buy a "pro bundle" with say midi and link for the same price I paid for the band pack

Yes, I'd also be in for Midi out, preferably as a stand-alone IAP.

    This really isn't easy.

Try separating Chords, Leads & Arpeggios that (to sound nice) tend to use the same notes in a scale. ;)

  • @SpookyZoo - unless I'm mistaken, Medly currently exports MIDI where each track is a separate track in MIDI.

    This.

Also, your sounpacks are only a dozen for £2:29 and to be honest rather mediocre. So the idea of having these tied to Midi out would put me off. Make the feature available as stand alone, and that is well worth a reasonable charge.

I'm getting mixed results. Imported to several other ios apps where it was all mixed into one. Tried exporting to pc and saw the tracks were separate.

The drums are an issue though. For some reason they appear to be placed on Octave C-2 and apps are just not recognising this. Also the bass is on c2-c4?

Could you explain a little about what's going on with the midi export side. This would really help, thanks.

I've got a list of suggestions that I'll email to your support.

    • Double tap to reset slider positions (Pitch, Delay etc)
    • Allow the Import album artwork to be changed

    I'll email the others, cheers.

Really like the smoothness of the app in general, well done!

    @SpookyZoo

For MIDI - the apps that are importing it as one track, mind give us a few examples so we can test on? As to the rest of your questions, @jayrhynas should respond soon with some answers (he's the guy that wrote it)

For Double tap to reset slider positions - I remember coding that in and pulling it out last minute, and I'm not too certain why...

For changing the artwork after you import one - you can already do that. Just press on the "custom" thumbnail again and the picker should pop up.**

**EDIT: oops... "imports album'... we may change it so it looks better, but we want to make sure you'll always know that's where your imports live.

For the drums, there's no standard way to map our drum samples to a given MIDI note, unlike pitched instruments. There is the GeneralMIDI specification, and we may try to match that more in a future update, but we still have many types of drums that don't have a corresponding item in General MIDI.
For now, it's best to use your editor to map drum samples of your choice to the first 16 MIDI notes.

We also try to map each instrument to the correct range on the MIDI keyboard, so not all instruments will lie in the same octave. We do need to clean that up a bit though to make it more accurate.

  • @baldajan @jayrhynas Thanks for your responses.

I really like the flow of the app, very smooth gestures. Would be a killer if you could nail the midi.

    Cheers

  • Medley exports midi to separate tracks in Music Studio and Cubasis. That's good enough for me

  • +1 for midi-out as an IAP. I'd love to use this on my external gear. For now, using Modstep for that which is excellent! (but not beginner friendly)

We've been wanting to release MIDI In & Out for too long now and we're hoping to finally release them in 4.0 (Late Winter/Early Spring 2017). No clue on pricing yet. We're currently considering 4.99 USD for its price (since we believe it'll be a niche IAP).

Any feedback on price would be super helpful

  • Well up to £5 I'd buy it. But I think $5 would be better as there are more Americans than brits.

    NANOSTUDIO.

I use this for most of my midi editing as it's by far the smoothest way on iOS for me.

Almost all midi files, as well as Chordbot, iRealB and AUXY files all manage to transfer on individual tracks within Nanostudio.

Medley files however are all melded into one track, almost impossible to make use of outside of the app as is.

Thanks for looking into this. Happy New Year! :)

  • In addition as mentioned previously, it seems your drums export way to low (midi octave -2?) to even be recognised elsewhere.

  • @SpookyZoo

Thanks for letting us know. Will try to get a fix out soon :)

@baldajan ready to buy whenever it's ready.

I found the issue - Medly exports each instrument on a different track, but all on the same channel (0). GarageBand etc will split the tracks but Nanostudio ignores the tracks and just groups based on channel #. This will be fixed in the next update for Medly.

  • Cool! Waiting for the 4.0 update!

4.0 is coming later in the year. The MIDI fix (with a few other fixes) should be out in a week or two :)

So no midi out IAP in v4. Is it still in the future plans?

  • Cool little app

    Always dug it.

  • @Geir sorry for the late reply. Yes, it’s still part of our plans. Right now we’re focusing on getting audio import released, likely followed by iCloud. We hope to release MIDI IO in the fall, but plans can change.

  • Great! Thanks for your reply. As soon as you have the midi out feature in store I'll be buying it ;)
