iTunes won't start on Win7 PC

Sorry to post this here, as it is not directly related to either Music or AB, but I have exhausted all other avenues :|

I have a Win7 64 bit laptop, and iTunes will not start a second time.

If I reboot the machine, and start iTunes all is well.
If I close iTunes and then try and open it again, it will not open.....the .EXE starts and grabs a load of ram (I can see it in task manager) but the UI never appears, and I have to reboot the laptop again if I want to run iTunes.

HELP!!!

  • I started yesterday to buy Tin Pan Rhythm with no issues, except the fact it took a very long time to do it. I have to say mu iTunes version is not up to date. W7 64 bits

  • I had a weird problem with iTunes on Win7 a while ago; I had pinned it to my "Recent Apps" list on Start Menu so it always appeared at the top of the list. Then it started to behave as you've described. I tried all sorts of things and only when I unpinned it again did it work normally!
When you quit iTunes, does the process keep running? (Right-click taskbar and click Task Manager, switch to processes tab, I think the process is iTunes.exe ?) if so, can you right-click and End the process?
If that's not it, I would recommend taking a full backup of the various folders (going from memory: c:\program files\apple etc, both regular and x86; c:\users\\appdata\local\apple plus the roaming folder; c:\users\\documents\music\itunes) then start repair work... Install latest iTunes; you could uninstall & reinstall but please do some research first to make sure you can get back everything you need!! I rely heavily on music ratings & last played in iTunes so I would be very cautious about uninstalling...
    Good luck

  • I had a similar problem with W.7 64 bit....
I could not open iTunes at all... I had to call them, (Apple) and had to uninstall and reinstall as it had to do with a bad update or something... I even had those guys manipulating my PC remotely....lol
But in the end they fixed it....sorry not much help I know, hopefully you get it fixed...GL

Not pinned, have removed from the Most recently used also, still not working.....yes I have killed iTunes.exe...numerous times lol.

    I'll give it a go before I resort to re-install, ta :)

    If only :)

Tried all that, and none of it works :(

Uninstall is the only thing left to try from that list.

Lol. Typical Mac user. "Everything else is crap."

My windows works fine thank you very much. And this is from a person that had a Mac pro.
The OS of choice doesn't matter. Bugs happen everywhere. Afterall modern Macs are just glorified PC's. The hardware inside is identical. Not like the olden days where they had different CPU architecture.

    You had a Mac Pro?
Are we talking about the 30kg old stuff or the new generation?
    Version 1.1 or v.5.1 or 7.1?

If you compare an average Win PC with a new generation Mac Pro you may not have the right knowledge about the Mac architecture...

    My opinion rest, Windows sucks...

I had one of these:- http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_pro/specs/mac-pro-quad-core-3.2-mid-2012-nehalem-specs.html

Sure. It's not the top of the line at the time. My point wasn't that Mac was garbage. I actually know people who even use Linux for production with their own custom rigs.

The hardware is a lot more important than the OS.

I'm currently using a hackintosh I had built myself before I installed windows on it. Its been overclocked to hell at this point and has 32 gigs of ram (upgrading to 128gb later) that let me run multiple instances of serum and pretty much all the plugins I could want and barely break a sweat while still having below 3.5ms latency.

End of the day the OS is irrelevant. Even if I still had macOS on it the performance would pretty much be identical for my needs.

  • I had an itunes update a few months ago that somehow corrupted my system and made a huge mess. I forget how I fixed it. Apple doesnt want itunes to work well on windows, no software stays this shitty for this long without a hidden Illuminati agenda (or a desire to convert us to Macs, or something else).

To be honest. What exactly do you guys use iTunes for ? I mostly just use ifunbox. I much prefer being able to directly copy and paste files into each apps sandbox.

Unless of course it's for backing up your device. That would make sense I guess.

I just installed rockbox on my old iPod. Drag and drop folders. So much better than using iTunes. Plus Flac and .ogg support.

EDIT:- damn. Just checked on their site. Seems like the 5.5g is the last gen with a stable port. The classic is a 6th gen. Hopefully someone will eventually port it properly. The sound chips on the old iPods are a lot better than what apple used them for. The 5.5gs Wolfson DAC chip is amazing using rockbox. Newer iphones and iPads can't really compare. (Talking about the onboard DSP. Obviously using a good interface you can get better audio on the new devices)

Edit2:- seems like the port is pretty fine actually. Just that you lose dualboot. On older devices you can swap back to the normal OS but on the classics you basically lose the original OS. (You can still get it back using "restore iPod"). Do you use external accessories with the iPod classic ? Coz if not you might really consider grabbing it from here:- http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/IpodClassicPort

The old classic I have, connected using 30 pin line out to a headphone amp sounds as good as anything I have listened to music on (source files permitting, i.e not too compressed mp3 wise). I use it mostly in the car connected to Aux in. I'd definitely be interested in making this even better with other software if it is possible.
Unfortunately the headphone socket is broke, so have to use the headphone amp if I want to listen with phones, but I rarely do that these days.
And yes, it does sound far superior to an iPod Touch or iPad connected via the phones anyway.

The socket is actually a pretty cheap fix. Cost me like 5$ I think. Lemme see if I can find it online.

EDIT:- Ok. It's 15$ now. A guide and the place to buy it is here:- https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPod+Classic+Headphone+Jack+&+Hold+Switch+Replacement/562

  • Try downloading iTunes for older cards version(when StudioMux was first released. The app, at the time didn't like the latest version of iTunes then). I found it a bit more reliable than the new iTunes.

the most useful way is to uninstall itunes and reinstall it later

  • I had this, and in the end gave up on iTunes as the biggest pile of crap in computer software. Instead, I use iMazing 2. Works superbly on Mac and PC.

Correct. But it helps doing just the opposite what Apple said in HT203206.

DO NOT INSTALL AND USE THE CURRENT ITUNES VERSION.

The current versions is completely fucked up by Apple. Another big advantage of the older version: You can save your ipa files to your computer.

Important considering how many apps die when ios and hardware changes

I wonder if this could explain why so many people report problems with Studiomux which requires iTunes to work? I kept it at 12.6.4.3 on my PC & Studiomux works great.......could this be the reason?
