So I was going to buy the new gadgets but....

Made a left turn and dropped 20 on TNR-e by Yamaha and... Whoa. Why is this not mentioned more? There's just so much cool shit jam packed in there. Genius interface, 6 different note performance modes. You can load other synths as IAA Instrument to be controlled by any of the weird modes. One instance though it appears. Do you like arpeggionome? Wish it was polyphonic? Well that's basically taken care of here. Do you like Xynthesizr but maybe it would be better if you could have it controlling 16 layers of sound per pattern? Done. Are you tired of scrolling through boring lists to find that preset you want? Well hold on to your nutsack because TNR lets you swiftly select any one of its 256 sounds by mapping them right on the 16 by 16 programming grid. Just double tap and swipe away while the pattern switches timbres live. So cool! I gotta go lie down now.

  • Cool reccomendation. You are correct that this one gets overlooked, but I'd have to research more before pulling the trigger.

My concern would be that I have a lot of apps like Beatwave that are great music creation ecosystems but have a bunch of pre-canned sounds that I eventually tire of. Looks like this one can play nice with other apps though...

  • i do like this app. good for jamming.

  • Yeah it's pricey so research is needed. If anything I've gotten a cool IAA controller out of it. Lots to explore still.

  • Well, mind has been further blown. With a little manual reading and ingenuity I got the thing set up to function as an ikaossilator. Using other synths for sound sources. With draw mode plus loop speed adjustment I'm getting 4 bar patterns recorded live with Animoog and Addictive Synth. Might be able to do 8. Awesome.

  • how many external iOS synths can you run at one time?

  • ....I can't afford to eat, let alone buy more gadgets lol :p

  • Haven't pushed the instrument limit yet, but I had 2 instruments on 2 layers going. There's 16 layers. I do think it's dependent on the play modes though and I couldn't find documentation on that so not 100% sure

I've got TNR-e just for the sake of getting access to some classic Yamaha samples :D

Why o why has Yamaha not made a 'competitor' to Roland iOS SoundCanvas, XG kicked GM/GS2's a** like there was no tomorrow...

  • I did a Getting Started video for this a while ago, I always like both TNR apps

  • Muji SuperDry TNR-san.

I'll be checking that out. Your videos are great by the way. totally sold me on voxyn

  • Is the only difference between tnr-i and tnr-e the sounds?

  • Tenori E has built in fx and different sounds.

  • I've been holding out for a sale on this one for ages. Portrait mode only is the only thing which puts me off.....

Time was, this was a hotly anticipated premium app (TNR I, the 1st one), the hardware version had made a big impact, cost 1k or so...
I got it as soon as it was live, wrote one of my gushy AppStore reviews, had lots of fun. I really got into this style of music making for a minute, the 2 TNRs and the 2 4Pockets release (Synergy, Aurora - that one goes back to '06 Windows Mobile) seem the best of them. The 4 pockets had their own samplers and synths onboard, and TNRs have the Yamaha libraries, fx approach in 4pockets, Synergy especially, was deep and cool in its own way (more traditional plugin style) and TNRe has the x/y automations...
Fun way to make music, as of today can't make audio export work, AudioCopy would've allowed srtem export with workarounds, except it seems the TNRs and AudioCopy have a communication breakdown, the AudioCopy SDK is newer than the last TNR update?

  • When I got it it had been updated with fixes in February. The TNR e that is

    how's synergy holding up?

  • TNR rocks i agree but so do Beatwave and gadget.Thank you my iPad,lav ya

  • @Carnbot Me too! Been on my wish list forever. Apparently $20 exceeds my casual purchase threshold plus I'm a saleoholic. If I can use my formidable iKaossilator skills in there, however, I'm quite tempted now...

  • Well I might have misheard what was happening. It seems you can only do 1 IAA instrument at a time, all the notes in every layer will be assigned to any IAA instrument you have open so no per layer IAA. Unless this is a bug. Because by all means the app makes it seem as though that was possible. No clue. Any experts here? Still fun otherwise but I will have to continue praying for Korg to release ikaossilator 2. (I'm assuming this will happen eventually, people are still leaving a steady stream of glowing reviews on the store).

  • Both TNR apps are great for sending core midi out to hardware too. I still use my hardware Tenori On. i love the tactility and how quick you can jump around and switch things up. awesome tool for sketching.

makes you wonder why they haven't done ikaossilator 2 already

There's no assigning midi channels on the TNR side, just instruments. On the instrument side I selected Midi on the channel strip in Gadget ("easy" midi config) midi channel 2 in Addictive Synth. Only tried those two, but each instrument only responded to its own layer.,. Nice. Mind you, I tried this with both TNR I, and TNR e, and only got it working in e.

@kobamoto - Synergy: that'll be the next legacy purchase I'll reinstall, it had its pleasures, but my present approach left it behind-

As a self contained environment, others have it beat, and the only multichannel stem output (other than the usual mute-all-but-one-track-and-export-one-by-one-via Audiowhatsit) was direct to 4pockets Meteor, (nice synergistic feature) but in spite of my gushy review of Meteor back in the day (that I think 4Pockets is still using on their site) I haven't had any 4pockets stuff on my device for a couple years..

Edit, re Synergy and 4pockets, someone has acquired the 4pockets inventory, "Kal Group" which may mean there will be some action on Synergy, it's been a couple years since the last update.

Workflow wise Synergy reminded me a lot of iSequence, it would surprise me if beepstreet had done a consult...

  • Yeah I got it working finally. Apparently I had a brain fart and completely forgot about the concept of midi channels. All my external iOS synths were on omni. I feel dumb

Nah - not dumb, midi on iOS is a royal pain in the ass, i.e.: what worked in TNR-e, didn't work in TNR-i, I have no idea why.

    So I have some questions.

    • Does TNR-e have midi clock sync?

    • Can you sequence a couple of different apps on different midi channels (or different ports?).

    • can you lock to scale/key

I'm looking for a sequencing solution on iPhone that's 'better' or 'easier' than Xynthersizer (only one pattern really) or Infinite Looper (nice but the piano roll is awkward).

  • from my brief time with it, I have not messed with midi clock sync, but it appears to be there with options like master/slave. It sends midi out on channels 1-16 corresponding to the layers within each section/block. You'd have to keep the same instruments mappings for each section though as switching things around seems like it would be messy. There are other quirks like if you change the play mode of a layer, it goes back to the default instrument, so some setup is required. You can lock scales and create your own. You don't choose a root note like other apps, just transpose the master by semitones. I'm liking it but there is a learning curve and the menu/file system is somewhat convoluted. Manual reading required.

  • The workflow would be to set up your layers and corresponding external synths with your preferred play modes, build up a section/block. Then copy the entire block to the next, clear the unwanted parts, and so on. Then record the performance as you switch between blocks and what not. I'm not aware of any midi export

And same here. I've had tnr-i for a long time and had fun with it at first, but always found it difficult/time consuming to put together longer pieces. Especially in comparison to something like gadget.
