What in-ear headphone?

Just learned that in-ear headphones can be pretty good, and not the same as the constantantly-falling out ear buds. And amazingly, I've seen prices at $400, $800, and even (OMG!) 2,300...

Would like to hear what folks on this forum are using in this category (if any). I'm just a tinker, so think I'll be passing on the $2300 set... LOL!

  • Meelectronics are not bad. Got the $50 model. They sound good, but honestly not that much better then the $20 ones. Check em out.

  • I picked up a set of Klipsch X5s that I am super happy with; to me a flat accurate sound....

  • Shure se215. Awesome value for the money

I have these and like them.

  • Gorilla Ears. Mine are breaking after many many shows, having them resting on my shoulders during a sound check , jumping and having them fall to the ground and stepping on the right one didn't help...going to be getting new molds done soon.

I've been using some Shure SE846's the last month or so and have been blown away by them. The low end and imaging in particular is pretty amazing for IEMs, it almost rivals my big mastering monitors. Blows away my Focal Spirit Pros or the Audeze LCD-Xs I was using. They're expensive for sure, but if you do a lot of work in headphones definitely worth it, and not even half of your $2300 high end :) For me it's worth it to have a set of IEMs I can trust while travelling, let's me get a lot of my mastering prep work done on the road so I can just do final tweaks back in the studio.

I was using SE425's prior to this, and long ago E4c and SE215's. Those are nice too, in a lot of ways better than normal headphones I find. Not that much low end, but enough to do some portable music making for sure. In fact I'm selling my SE425's for $150 if anyone is interested, like new condition with all accessories.

  • Wow, Shure also makes a portable DAC for just under $1000. Ow! It's got great reviews.

I'm actually surprised how good the SE846s sound straight from the iPhone 6. Not that bad compared to my Hilo back in the studio. There's a difference, but it's not as big as I expected.

  • @seachord , check out shure se112...they run about $60 and have excellent specs...
Well good enough for my old ears ;)

  • Thanks to all for the ideas. Went with the Mee Duo - $80 on Amazon, and $50 from their site. I'm hearing bass and low sounds I never knew where there!

  • Any more damaging to the ear than over/on ear headphones?

  • From what I've read, they are quite safe as due to the closed environment and close proximity to the ear, one doesn't need to use overly loud volume. My pair came in yesterday and I took a break to try them out. Put on some good New Age music on the IPad, and chilled for a couple hours! Was even able put my ear on the pillow... Did turn them up s bit, but it was all quite enjoyable.

After a couple hours use I took them off and may have noticed a slight discomfort after having them in so long - but that went away quickly.

The Mee's come with 6 different plug-sets so there should be no prob finding s good fit.

In tinkering with Shoom, I heard amazing lows I just didn't know were there. I'd highly recommend some form or brand of these earphones for any serious iPad musician/tinkerer/artist.

I finally got 30€ Sony MDR ex450 in ear monitors.
Really impressive specs and great sound for 30 bucks with 5 year warranty. Makes me wonder though how much better sound must be out of 100€ and up head phones....maybe some day I'll know

  • Hi there! The price range you have mentioned is quite high. My friend recently got a pair of noise isolating in-ear earphones from Soundmagic in the range of $40-$50. Which I think is really affordable to buy.

I own a pair of Sony XBA-H1 in-ear phones and they are great. The bass is solid and tight and the highs and mids are sweet and the soundstage is impressive and has a lot of depth. I also own a pair of B&W C5 in-ear phones that are just as good but cost more.

  • nice to see this thread, I am looking for recommendations on good quality, isolating in ear headphones as well, isolation is a high priority right after sound? I guess for under a hundred bucks but that's not allot for headphones these days

  • I've been keeping my eyes on these.

Wish I had the balls to take a flier on these as my Christmas present this year from the Missus, but sadly I don't....a blind $300 just seems a little rich (to me).

is that the name of a set of phones?

  • why yes it it... thanks for the tips Steph/Nrgb checking them out

  • wow the amazon reviews of those 1more triple phones are so different from one another I wonder if the thumbs down people are listening to the same phones as the thumbs up people, it's quite a contrast

I have these and use them for at least 2 hours a day, from the stern show to listening to music at the gym to making music. Not sure i like them for all those. For listening to music it's maybe too flat. If you want bass you need to keep jamming them way in. If you listen to something that isn't mixed the best you hear a bunch of errors. Super good for reference though.

I'm going to respond to my own post and say while I highly recommend custom IEM'S, especially for stage use, i can't recommend gorilla ears, mine got worse since that post and no response from customer support emails. I'm going to have another company do new shells for me, although they didn't respond to my emails either... I guess I'll be calling them at some point.

I have MEE Audio M6 Pro, they have interchangeable cables & come with two, both reinforced for robust durability — one is TRRS 4-pole with a mic/controller for phone/library listening, and the other is standard TRS 3-pole stereo for better iOS audio & recording performance. Plus the cables come with more ear tip options than I've ever seen, to get that crucial optimal in-ear fit.

For me the audio performance, fit and isolation are outstanding, I can't recommend them highly enough. I personally cannot understand paying more than £150 for head/earphones, and these right now are £35!

I'm considering getting a backup pair.

  • I was on the hunt for some decent-ish in ear ‘phones and found this thread, but a lot of the models mentioned are discontinued. What’s the current wisdom on sub forty note ones, and are KZ ATE ones just fine at sun fifteen? There’s some Stagg dual driver ones in the uk fairly cheap, around a tenner less than the basic single driver Shure ones, always so (too] much choice when I look for stuff these days 🥴😁

I’m a huge fan of the Sennheiser IE series. They have a model for each price point and the low end model is already quite good. AFAIK they all have just a single driver which is good to avoid phase problems.

I think I will never go back to other headphone types. IEMs sound very good, are compact and I can wear them for hours.

  • I use KZ ZAX and they are great and cheap

  • I use KZ ATE, they grate and they’re cheap
