Lol, I see that any comparison involving the gentler half of the world raise interest...
@Dchild your are more clever than me, evidently. When (if...) that naughty gal put a fine looking dress and shows behaving, I'll make peace. Meanwhile... If I do not err those guys made that little wonder that is Touchable. One can expect the best from them.
@ToMess what against Ladas? I had one (not proud of it)
@BiancaNeve I DO love Modstep, but, as they say, I'm through a "period of reflection"
Well they have been kind of a joke since many decades where i live. But they are reliable, no matter how cold or how, ill give you that. Typical soviet construction, works every time, but isnt very good. Dunno if they started making cars again after the 70's or 80's tho. If so, they are most likely equally crappy(compared to technology of the time) than before, but not as reliable.
I think this is going bit off topic tho. Wouldnt want to fill the topic with too many unrelated posts
When it comes down to the crunch, Modstep just does things that other apps can only dream of. It's genuinely the only option in it's category for serious live use and when utilised effectively, is stable and reliable.
Yes, the bugs I've experienced are annoying and I'd like them to be fixed (and it's gradually happening!) but fortunately these are bugs that affect the preparatory stages of performance and not the performance itself. Without these issues I'd have a much quicker and more fun or in depth process when I'm working at home with Modstep, but I've never had an issue with it live.
When manually input of notes into MODSTEP - how do you get more than a 1/4 note?
Is it normal for the AU effects to stay stuck on screeN?
I have recently ventured into the waters and am looking to get some basics down.
Thanks
Also, there is a seperate issue NOT related to external midi, replicable with the native keys as well.
The note length recording is not matching the speed of the clip if it's set to anything other than 1. If the clip is playing slower than one, i can see the key press running ahead of the transport bar, resulting in longer than desired recorded notes. If the clip plays faster than 1, keypresses lag behind the transport bar, resulting in shorter than desired recorded notes.
I have no workaround other than to edit the length, anyone else?
And regarding changing clip speed, the speed change usually takes effect once i select the clip. I assume this is the intended behavior but doesn't always work. Sometimes my touch doesn't respond with numerous tries. At this point i have to stop the main transport and start again in order to get a response.
%#@!!!!! What is wrong with this app?!
I've barely used it because I originally brought it to MIDI synch volcas and Kaoss devices to Gadget and maybe other apps. It seemed like the ideal solution rather than getting a Beatstep pro.
But I went off that direction because of all sorts of problems (not all modstep's fault, e.g. Some abe link related, volca sample's bizarre midi etc)
I went back to it recently because I and my friend wanted to see if we could control his eurorack rig with Modstep. This went down well (as did using Fugue Machine; oh the fun!)
I recently got the RK002 MIDIator cable from Retrokits, so at last it seems I can have my ideal set up : IPad Pro to iconnectMIDI2 to Kenton thru 5 to Volca Sample (plus maybe Volca Bass/Beats), Kaossilator/KP3. With just the Sample yesterday, it all seemed to be working a treat except perhaps that to get the RK002 working I needed the Kenton in the chain to power it, all a bit convoluted, but still, may as well use it as an excuse to MIDI patch a bunch of things.
That was with Link however. I though what with previous issues with Link, that taking link out of equation and using Modstep to trigger every clock seemed like a step towards stability.
But no.
Bizarrely the Modstep clock slows down as soon as play is pressed, although it doesn't change the speed of Gadget (EDIT nope it does that too), just the volcas (and presumably anything else connected). This has got to be a bug, I can't understand why anyone would want it as a feature.
I would like to Modstep succeed because it's packed with potential and when it works, it's a complete marvel. But also there is nothing else that I have seen that would function this way so without Modstep, I've banked on a portable set up that isn't working reliably and is also reliant on Modstep as the glue. This has made the transition from MacBook step up to an iPad setup a frustrating waste of 3 months.
EDIT. Ok so I've calmed down now, with Link activated, it is possible to use all the things, but Gadget needs triggering separately rather than by Modstep. All of this without Audiobus. It will do for my next wave of experimentation but ultimately it's not ideal at all and I'd need to test it a lot before I dare using Modstep on stage.
To sum up the rant: bug making clock runs down to 20bpm. Argh.
PS I have no idea why that first line is in larger type but on reflection, it seems appropriate.
Look for any MIDI loops, or competing clocks. If you're going to have ModStep as the master clock, be sure that no other apps or hardware are broadcasting clock. I ran into this before and that was the issue ... not ModStep's fault in that particular case.
AudioBus's global transport + Link works wonders.
Cheers for the reply @wim . I did it through Audiobus to begin with, switched off the abe link in Audiobus, gadget and Modstep and the clock going down thing began. I took Audiobus out of the equation and it was still happening. Abe link does seem much more stable these days.
Link's been perfect from day one for me. Real solid anchor in the iOS ecosystem
ModStep's the kind of app I bought for no reason when it came out, abandoned it for awhile, and then keep finding reasons why it might be useful later on, particularly as I add pieces of (mostly low-end) hardware that need to be sequenced. There's a lot of good potential there that no other single app really tackles: a solid piano roll sequencer, Ableton-style loop/scene triggering, detailed CC templates for MIDI control, AU support, and even an internal synth and sampler.
But it remains an absolute crash-fest. I got it to crash twice in 30 seconds yesterday either by dragging one of the instruments or templates onto the main screen.
Also, while I can't say the layout is bad (and probably can be adjusted to over time), there's something about their choice in laying things out that makes me incapable of figuring out even how to do the easiest things - like routing a track to a friggin' external MIDI device, which I didn't figure out until I looked up the manual an hour after I was done and discovered an "IO" button about 11 inches away from where I expected it to be on my iPad Pro.
So I can't say I fully "regret" the purchase when I keep finding potential uses for it. But until I can get those features to work reliably, it remains a bit of an unfulfilled promise.
Meltdown averted! Setting iconnectMIDI2 to master sorted it out. Yay :")
EDIT: I spoke too soon. Oh well it works well with abe link which I suppose is better in the long run maybe..
Any idea when this update would be ready
Got it to work with my Ploytec PL2 but still can't figure out how program change works...
Same here, I load a program change, set to 0, then I thought using the X/Y pad would increase the values, but it doesn't do anything at the moment...
But you might be interested by this post (and I'll dig in that way myself)

+1
BTW I'm really enjoying Modstep more and more![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Everybody seems to like this for live use, but I love it to compose. Make a loop, keep it, move on, revisit, etc. The IAA stuff gets irritating, but the apps that have trouble sort of make themselves known and get shelved (DRC, Sunrizer occascionally). I haven't figured out how to deftly host them in AUM or AB or both — deftly being the operative word. I mean, I don't know what I want to use yet until I use it!
My Big Problem: Creating a song structure out of disparate clips. Is there a way to insert an empty scene (or five or six) BEFORE THE first existing scene? I'd like have the beginning of the track empty so I can drag clips in their correct order. What happens now is I get a good kind of structure, and then I have to add a bunch of empty scenes AFTER, and then drag clips one by one down...and then remember which ones I've moved and which I can delete....
It's a recipe for disaster.
Yes, you can drag a new blank scene from the bottom to the top with the pencil tool selected. Just drag it up the scene bar until a white line appears on top of the first scene and then let go.
The pencil tool! How on EARTH did you discover that?
Thanks.
Ha ha. An easter egg! Lets find some more!
Now we're cookin' on gas.
%#@!!!!! What is wrong with this app?!
Grr...I was working on my track, running smoothly for days, then I don't know what happens with the swing...
I just lost it at the moment, the chaining of my pattern has lost is groove, or just does not start anymore at the first "right" step....
More than pissed, I'm just tired...I can imagine the pain of the devs...
Is it a drum track? Could you have accidentally hit the arrow keys that shift the pattern left or right?
It seems like some of y'all use modstep midi sequencer style without hosting the other apps. How do I set that up?
Pretty simple really. Click "IO" and in midi out for each track just choose the IAA apps eg:- gadget channel 1
You can select notes manually to quantize. In the piano roll, press the quantise button and then press each note you'd like to quantise and finally press apply
As far as dragging notes go, i have yet to find a snap to function. Same when copying notes
It seems Modstep likes to delete random notes particularly when quantising but also when copying bars. Very strange
Maybe my problem came with the auto quantize while moving a note (it's not a drum part), I moved the swing button, then all notes moved, then i moved manually one or two notes, then WTF ? then I started to try to put everything in place, then I got lost with the chaining, then I had ghost notes, then I had very very little note due to a touch (had to zoom at max, but very hard to delete the note, to focus on the timeline...) then at recording directly, I didn't get all notes recording...Then oh men...![ ](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/neutral.png)
For the next time, when I got something running, even not to an advanced stage, I need to save properly a new song...
GRRRR...While recording, I can see notes appearing in the clip, but they're not recorded ! Some of them are recorded, some definitely doesn't want to be recorded...
Needs an major update, no doubts...
Well...After a fresh day, I was very happy to have rebuild everything. It was working great, then I have some new notes playing on some patterns...
They just don't exist...Also, some notes have changed...
Crazy...There's nothing I can do...Restart the ipad...Same result...It has "corrupted" some patterns...
EDIT : the Mininova was dying in fact...Restarted it fix the problem...It's not always the apps that crash, even hardware...![:D :D](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/lol.png)
