I've just seen this on Discchord, apparently it's not out yet. But one reply in the YouTube comments suggests that it should be out any moment.

    Free and no IAP
    (Sorry for double post)

  • It's an AU! Christmas came early :D

  • wow, that's great an AU FM from Yamaha and free. I can see that some patch banks are locked unless you connect to the hardware synth in the ad, but nevertheless a great free app. :)

I'll have to 'cheat' and visit a local music-shop once they have the synth in question available...
I'd gladly pay IAP for the TX81z factory patches including 'Lately Bass' :D

Yes good idea ;) I've actually been on a bit of an FM hardware buying spree since getting the Volca FM. I'm waiting for a TX802 to be delivered....! Bit addicted to FM at the moment

In my dreams Cubasis 2.0 will unlock this...
I have the TX81z so in theory I should be able to use it to unlock at least the TX81z patches :D

  • Not only patches are locked in demo mode. To save your own presets you have to connect your iDevice to a Yamaha MX synth.

Yes, fingers crossed that unlocks them. I was kind of hoping the app might be able to send new patches to the hardware FMs but I think that's probably hoping for too much.

  • Why not include all Yamaha keyboards, not just a few?

  • And it s free as usual with Yamaha.Thank you .

    OMG serious

  • Can't save your sounds without buying a HW synth, but was fun while it lasted :D

Yeah, hope next version includes IAP to unlock it. Don't feel like going out and buying MX49/61...
In my dreams Cubasis 2.0 will unlock this app just the way some Yamaha gear unlocks Cubasis LE :D

  • Fun for a minute but quickly turns into frustrationware. Synth Book was a better approach -- full featured synth, albeit bloatware because of the "book" part of it.

Better yet, spend a few bucks/quid and get yourself FM4.

I'm still hoping Yamaha will add IAP to this because it works so well as AU too.
(Who knows, maybe Cubasis 2.0 will unlock this app just as the MX line unlocks Cubasis LE).

My TX81Z probably needs a new battery because it has lost all it's memory and can't keep patches between reboots so for that alone I'd be happy to pay IAP for this FM Essentials app.

What's also cool about this FM Essentials is that it also has op feedback on all 4 oscillators just like the ReFace DX, so that alone makes it quite unique among FM apps for iOS. Add to that the 'scene automation' that morphs between patch setups for quite nice mayhem :D

I'm eagerly waiting for a reply from Yamaha support regarding alternate unlock methods...

  • Here's the FM Essential U.S. Link. A very nice addition to the AU ranks.

  • Can you at least save tweaked patches within the DAW where FM Essential is acting as AU? I mean, if I have 3 tracks of FM Essential as AU in Garageband, will the tweaks on those 3 patches be captured stably within that song? (Actually, can you even tweak the parameters within the AU UI, or just move the trackball around? I downloaded the app and had fun playing with the parameters in-app but i haven't tried it as an AU yet)

  • Nice AU...but hardware unlocked features is bad precedent.....I think somewhere beneath the earth iLok has been awakened

I don't need another keyboard so I'd rather pay IAP to unlock it!

Who knows, the MX49/61 already unlocks Cubasis LE so in an ideal situation it would be more than fair for the full version of Cubasis to unlock the FM Essentials app :D (I can dream, can't I?)

Totes. Plus tf7. Plus phase84 (technically PM)

These aren't AU so they are banned :)

Also it seems nobody dares to go 6 operator any more :'( That's what put NI FM7/FM8 on the map

I'm right there with you. Glad to have this as an AU and I'd pay for an IAP unlock. But it would be awseome to throw a bone at us Cubasis users.

Indeed I also hope this leads Korg to do the right (AU) thing

    Roland too...

I mean, look at iOS Soundcanvas. Now think about having just one part with all three effects as one AU. Then add another part and another part :D

Considering Yamaha already has the AN2015 in the 'SynthBook' it might just be a matter of time before it gets an AU treatment too. Next up would be one app per synthesis method.(DX, AN, VL and AWM2 for starters).

The AWM2 AU wouldn't have to be huge either since the MX49 (that is required for unlocking) has approx 166MB of ROM-Samples to cover over 1000+ Motif Voices :)

I somehow feel that IAP will be coming as it's nothing new to Yamaha apps (The Music Mobile Sequencer has some IAPs for new sounds and patterns).

Time will tell what happens, soundwise both FM4 and DXi have just been beaten by Yamaha's FM Essentials...

  • Yum. An AU synth on iPhone.

If it can be modulated via midi cc's and it saves it's patch state between sessions when loaded as an AU at least - I'll be very happy.

Nope. Sadly not. Doesn't seem to save its patch state between sessions in AUM.
