Should I update my iPad 2 to 9.3.3?

Hi,

Monzo Jnr wants to run Minecraft on my old iPad 2 that I donated to him, but it's still on iOS7, and needs 8 as a minimum. I've read a few horror stories about speed decreases in v8 and early 9, but wondering how everything would run with the latest iOS.

Anyone running an iPad2 on the latest iOS?

I'm guessing if general performance takes a bashing, he wouldn't be able to run his silly game anyway. I'm not using it for music so it's not an issue for any music related shenanigans.

Cheers.

Yeah, can't install it on 7 so he's getting a bit frustrated!

Sounds like 9.3.3 will run slower than 7, but an improvement on 8. Be good to hear from anyone who's tried it.

  • Well, my wife has her own iPad2, so probably I will experiment on it.

  • no. hell no. keep it on 7. i think 9.3.3 bricked my ipad3. trying to see if i can resurrect it currently.

I have an iPad 2 on iOS 9.3.3 and everything is super slow and not any better than iOS 8. You can frequently expect a several second delay between touches and a response from the iPad 2.

oh right, thanks for the warnings.

  • I bet folks 'round here would be willing to trade a better bit of gear for an iOS 7 iPad

Heh, you'd have to prise it from my sons vice-like grip first.

I had heard iOS8 was a bit of a nightmare on the older pads which is why it's still on 7, thought it might be better on 9 though.

Problem is finding apps that still run on 7....

  • I have an iPad 2 on iOS 9 and confirm it is agonizingly SLOW, wish I could go back to 7. No child's pleading could convince me otherwise.

  • So, bye, bye, Minecraft.

  • On 32-bit devices: iPad 2, iPad 3, iPad 4, mini 1, then if you still have 7.1.2 and older app ipas, then you are better of sticking with 7.1.2 for audio performance (and general speed), than moving to 9.3

If you have already put 8 or earlier 9 on a 32-bit device, you are better off moving to 9.3, as it resolves audio performance issues in all 8 and all earlier 9.

If you are on a 64-bit device, apart from the odd app or two that aren't behaving quite as they should, 9.3.X is better than any earlier 8 or earlier 9 and gives comparable if not sometimes better audio performance than 7.1.2.

  • Thanks for the replies, looks like I'll stick to 7, and maybe let him borrow my Air 2 for Minecraft if he behaves himself...

and Audiobus still works on 7.1.2 ... maybe it's time to nudge the young man in a new direction ;)

  • well. i revived my ipad3. so all is not lost. but ye gads is it SLOW. DX

I run ios 9.3.3 on an iPad 3 and it works perfectly no issue including minecraft.

have you used you Ipad 3 on 7 ? gadget used to be able to handle 6-7 gadgets
but on ios 9.3.3 you need to freeze if you intend on using more than 2-3.
its literally almost half the performance now. Also. updating from 9.3.2 - 9.3.3
semi bricked my device. thankfully everythings working now. but i still regret
    updating from 7.1.2 a month ago :(

Way back when, I upgraded my iPad mini 2 from iOS 7 to iOS 8 because I wanted to install Patterning. Luckily I didn't regret the upgrade. I believe the option to upgrade to iOS 9 will be running out soon when iOS 10 is launched. And as some newer apps I might want, have an iOS 9 minimum requirement, is it time to ditch iOS 8? I just wouldn't want a reduction in performance that I presently enjoy on the mini 2, by upgrading to iOS 9.3.3.

the mini 2 is a 64bit device. its actually faster in 9.3+ only 32bit devices benefit from Ios 7.1.2.
ios 8 is just terrible. regardless of 32bit or 64bit once on 8 its better to go to 9.3+

I see that @MusicInclusive's post answered my query. Are there any other opinions in favour ditching IOS 8 for iOS 9 on 64 bit devices?

& @MusicInclusive: do you recall which odd apps that don't behave quite as well?

  • Right now I'm able to run Kiev, Kamata, Phoenix, and Gladstone all playing at the same time no freezing involved. Can run more if I stick to the older gadgets.

  • @Kandavu I have an iPad Mini 2 on iOS 9.3.3 and it definitely runs better than when it was on iOS 8.

  • Glad to hear that @InfoCheck

But what exactly do you use? Do you use AudioBus routes? With "heavyweight" apps like modulars or Auria or smth?

I still have an iPad2 and I eventually caved and upgraded it. I believe this weekend I am finally, FINALLY getting a new iPad. I agree that it is quite slow on iOS9, but if that's your only iPad, I didn't view it as much of a choice if I wanted to enjoy a high percentage of music apps that need either 8 or 9.

Now that I'm getting a faster iPad for music, though, I certainly wish I could downgrade it to iOS7, which was probably the last OS it ran comfortably. I would use it then for general internet, email, etc.

I have an iPad air 2 now but before that the iPad 3 was my main ios device. On the ipad3 I used audiobus , Cubasis, Gadget etc. My normal workflow was to just record one track and one app at a time into a DAW. That way I can
work with high track counts without bogging down the cpu with midi processing.

  • iPad 3 has problems because it was first device with Retina display, so more power was used from perfomance, yet CPU was old. It's iPad 3 that was more balanced technical wise.

Several of us over in the iPad Musician FB group have just been finding out today that iMini isn't playing well in chains on 9.3.X Working standalone, but having issues (no notes) when in an AB chain with FX.

I have had issues with Grain Science and on and off with Tonestack not producing sounds consistently.

Other than that, for me everything's been working OK.

I still use the older devices in my setup. You don't have to relegate them to non-music purposes

  • @MusicInclusive do you recall improvements from 9.1 to 9.3 on 64bit ipad air1?
I have ios 9.1 JB and wondering if audio performance is much better ,but don't want to give up the goodies of a JB device.
