Bigsky reverb for my iPad or Mother32?
I use my iPad as a synth module almost exclusively these days.. I'm trying to pick between a mother32 and a bigsky. This will be my last music purchase this year.. What do you guys think?

M32
Considering the vast difference in function: what do you need? I have an M32 and it's buckets of fun but if you really need a good reverb...
I know it's a very random question
I just love the sound of the bigsky, and I think it would really be cool for all the synths on my iPad to add to them.
Mother 32 might have to wait, the Moog app could probably tide me over for a while
Also the thought of running samplr, idensity, and borderlands through a bigsky o_0
Someone needs to make a reverb plugin like big sky for iOS. Haven't found anything that really comes close.
M32 + iPad reverb(aufx) is likely going to sound miles better/interesting than any synth on the iPad through a bigsky.
And...controlling a synth via screen vs moog hardware knobs etc?
No question if it was me I go for the M32, iPad reverb. I will dream of this now.
SamplR has an outstanding reverb of the 'clean ambient class'
the reverb part of EchoPad also falls in this domain
the '63 Spring' in JamUp is a fairly good representation of a spring reverb
(in reality good springs don't shatter as prominent as most fakes pretend)
and finally there is AD480 as a very good reverb of many characters...
iirc (from YT videos) there isn't much a BigSky could offer in addition
cheers, Tom
Another iPad! One for synths, one for effects!
I like delay pedals with ios for the knobs, but like the software reverbs better than my pedals. With audiobus it is easy to turn them off and on like a pedal.
This.
I own a Bluesky, very cool. But seriously - I get way more reverb mileage out of aufx space than the strymon. With a mother, you get hands on, tactile, modular goodness. Go with the Moog dude.
i say m32 too. and if you want a hardware reverb effect, look at the zoom MS-70CDR - its digital and its proud of it, but the crazyness that it can do its wicked. i dont have it, but used it for a day or so and i cried when i had to give it back
btw, i never really used any stompboxes before except for a metal muff, so take that as you will.
FWIW, the Big Sky was one of many hardware FX units I sold after getting into iOS music-making and realising I could get close enough with some of the excellent iOS reverbs already mentioned. IMHO, Strymon reverbs do have a certain "secret sauce" though, and if that becomes a sound you love, you'll find it really hard to find the exact same sound elsewhere - those boxes contain some serious audio processing firepower. While I was happy to let the Big Sky go with no regrets, the reverb I still do genuinely miss now and again is the 80's setting on the Strymon Flint - I honestly think that's one of the most musical sounding reverbs they do, but totally subjective of course And... you're not the only person thinking about getting an M32!
Would change things a little more in the favor of the M32 as well if you have other modular stuff or are planning on getting into it, or could see yourself adding another M32 or 2 later on.
3 of these together shown in Nick's video here at the end(15:20) looks like a hell of a lot of fun (and beautiful). Big possibilities with that setup I would think.
Hah, has thou taken a vow of chastity?
the m32 looks wicked. i love these little boxes. i have a microbrute, and recently bought an erebus [by dreadbox] but the lfo toggle is broken! so i hope to get word from the seller tomorrow, or i shall bring doom to them. hehe.
it was either an m32 or erebus for me, but i went with the later. im also very interested on the 0-coast as well! wicked thing is the connectivity between them.
big fancy effect pedals are damn awesome with an amazing sound, but i dont know. i find cheap effects to do a good job too. and like many have said already, ios effects do an amazing job too.
I've had a M32 since January. Can recommend getting one. I can't speak to bigsky. I'm thinking of acquiring an 0-coast as my next purchase.
I usually balk at spending big money on effects pedals. I sprung for the Boss DD-500 earlier this year, but I'd say the FabFilter Timeless has gotten 5x more use since I've owned the Boss.
I vote Mother-32. I got a Moog Rogue last year and nothing compares to hardware instruments. Software effects can accomplish most of what their counterparts can.
The thing about the Mother 32 is that it is actually a fairly simple mono synth, one VCO, not a lot of opportunity for waveform complexity beyond that of a basic simple synth. I think it only makes sense to have more than one.
The other thing about the Mother 32 is that it only makes one sort of music, and you’re not allowed to smile during it. Look at all the videos of Mother 32 on YouTube. The music is all the same.
I get the same thing about Volcas — there’s a load of volca videos on YouTube, all making exactly the same music.
It’s the same with Rebirth — there’s a load of Rebirth videos on YouTube, all making exactly the same music.
Mother-32 has it's limitations. Now if there was osc sync-input as standard adding two or more would increase the complexity a bit.
Then again, Mother-32 seems to be like a fun 'box' to mess with, it even farts
thanks everyone for the feedback, is aufx space really comparable in quality to the strymon though? And can it do these types of sounds:
That boss looks nice, more a delay pedal though. But thanks I will check it out
Great video I think I will go to my local music shop (they have a demo 32 setup) and spend a few hours with it before I make my decision. I have owned a lot of hardware in the past and it's been a ruff few years with moving to a new state and I sold nearly everything I owned. What I do have is still in storage a few 1000 kms away
Yeah I agree, it's a lovely looking synth but it might not fit my vibe.
Yup
It's normally the last link in the chain, so it's important for me to have a great sound on that last fx.
I do own a softube reverb (tsar1) and that thing is amazing. I love the idea of having that kind of reverb in a box that I don't need to route through my DAW
I loved this video, was the reason I started looking into the 32
Really? The shimmer, bloom, nonlinear, magento, chorale algorithms all seem pretty unique. What's a good iOS reverb to imitate these?
Hmm that's what I thought also, haven't been able to find anything that really sounds the same (I don't have all the iOS reverbs though of course).
It's more the experimental stuff I'm into (nave/animoog/samplr/borderlands/apesoft). Tuff choice for sure.
Oh its a total straight delay pedal, just providing my own anecdote of effects vs. synth
Crystalline by Holderness Media is an excellent "shimmer" verb .
Ipad app , but there is also an iphone version ; thus allowing two instances on ipads .
Appstore wont let me copy link for some reason .
