Thanks will check it out, I just spent an hour with a bunch of reverbs I already own in iOS. Nothing grabbing me like the bigsky sound does though.
you're better off with the bundle by Holderness, which includes also EchoPad, Swoopster and Johnny, all very useful in this context.
A reverb is more or less a modulated delay, so there's some overlapping in categories.
(I'd consider Shimmer a mod fx)
Anyway, in EchoPad there's a reverse algorithm (for nonlin), oilcan and more to combine several algorithms to one effect.
Reverb by Amazing Noises (same developers as Apesoft) is also outstanding.
It can handle unnaturally small and very large 'ambiences'... Bloom and Cloud likes included.
cheers, Tom
Thanks I will watch some videos of these, I might have to see if I can run them at a higher sample rate on a dedicated soundcard and see if they sound cleaner. I already have about half of those so I better test them before splashing cash on the bigsky...
it also depends a lot on your respective sources... there is no 'the best' around
With synths the Amazing Noise Reverb may deliver better results (+ spiced by the usual midi automation of this company) in comparison to the AD480.
The latter is way more dense and perfectly fakes the room response of a real guitar amp.
Which 'Reverb' entirely fails on - but those unaturally 'thin' rooms are exactly what a fat synth sound needs...
cheers, Tom
Most definitely on point with the no best, that's why I'm drawn to the bigsky. I love the sound of it, and it sounds really nice on synths. I will mostly be using it on wavetable synths and sample based material (animoog and nave being my two most used on iOS). I found a music shop that will let me demo a 32, now just to find one with a bigsky
certainly the best option to hear it with own ears.
My estimation was driven by (several) YT videos which reminded a lot on the 'modern' sound that's also featured by the IOS reverbs.
In contrast to (say) a Lexicon PCM80, which has a very special character, or (cheaper) a Rocktron Intellifex (still have one in a rack).
Beware of the 'Mother', tho... no problem to buy one, but IF you get addicted, that may become some expensive journey...
There's all that Eurorack stuff to tempt you, too
cheers, Tom
I think it's way too early in the year to be making your last purchase.
Nice point. Except that ofcourse you can use those synths other ways. The only is that the main usage is by people that just want to do old style acid and synth dance/ music. And that's the reason you see even that the commercials of this kind of stuff have all the same type of music. It targets just the acid/ dance style consumer.
Interesting to note is that back in the days the 303 and 909 became famous because of the use in Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing which is totally different than the acid sound the 303, 808 and 909 this machine became famous late 80s begin 90s. so actually you can use these machine to do some great and other stuff.
I've watched some youtube demos of Bigsky and it sounds really nice. Looks like anything you put into it comes out sounding special. Good reverbs are hard to find...single osc synths, not so much.
Talking about reverbs: I was quite tempted to buy the Oto Machines Bam earlier this year. I have a Biscuit and love it so i'm still tempted to get one. Does anyone here have it?
you might check a Roland DEP-5 instead... (I've read the Oto is sold out)
not as cute looking, but a classic, usually somewhere between 100-200 bucks

cheers, Tom
Crystalline->Aufx space is something else, for sure. And AUM has now made it so easy to route effects into other effects with varying send amounts... Lotta good in there.
That said, I still look longingly at both the Big Sky and the Dig pedals on occasion.
If you don't have other hardware, particularly hardware with CV IO, you might consider putting the Minilogue on your 'to check out' list. 4 analog voices and just a ton of fun (for a little less than the M32).
yeah minilogue makes it tougher to decide at these prices
I just bought AUFX Space this evening, based on this thread, so thanks.
And wow...
Sounds so good. (Especially with some rougher sounds from Gadget's Chiang Mai going into it).
It's my new favourite reverb by far.
I will be trying this
Out of curiosity, which other reverb apps do you have/have you tried?
Trying to find the best reverb app myself. I hear good things about AD480 too.
Thanks
edit: man, just looking through the app store...there are a lot of reverb apps I forgot about.
the AD480 is a really nice reverb - at first I didn't like it that much because it has a rather strange feature (at least that's my impression) that makes the size and time faders somewhat dependent of the other one's position. There are 'sweetspots' that may need a tiny re-adjustment of the other fader, but once you get them properly it does great tones like no other reverb I know on IOS.
It's strenght is small rooms with 'natural' sounds like acoustic guitar and amp sim cabinets to give them a 'real' ambience, most likely vocals should be great, too (but I haven't tried that myself yet)
My favorite settings are very small size with a long tail = lower 25% combined with upper 25% of the 2 leftmost faders. (due to the small size the tail effectively isn't long at all)
You can add crossfeed for more ambience, and some nice short delays.
Page 2 deals mostly with Eq settings of the reverb's response.
It's so simple to setup that I never use the presets, which might need some adjustments anyway (as mentioned above) because the setting varies with sources.
cheers, Tom
There are a lot of reverb apps around, my favourite is LiquidSonics Mobile Convolution. It sounds lovely, and lets you high pass and low pass the reverb to tailor your sound to taste.
Both of the Virsyn reverbs are good as well, and AUFX:Space, and AD480.
It's good fun for sure. Makes we wonder though if there's an app already that does what I'd really like: host IAA (and au!) effects plugins on a surface like nodes with the ability to drag and drop connections between them and adjust the 'send' amount on any of those connections. Audulus comes to mind but I haven't opened it in a long long time. Does it have IAA effect nodes? Or maybe Jasuto?
Samvada is a really interesting reverb too.
Wow, that's beautiful stuff. Big Sky really does bring the effing ambient magic. Of course, that little setup is around $1700!
Thanks. Yeah I have mobile convolution reverb and like it. Always worried I'm missing out on something better though
The only non-guitar hardware FX I have is an Eventide Eclipse, even though they are a bit old in the tooth they are pretty good. Not cheap though.
I don't know what a mother 32 is, but I have a big sky and a timeline and they are awesome.
You're basically my hero. Have some quality gear but able to miss the biggest synth release of the last 12 months. Because this is the internet I feel the need to say: Not being sarcastic!
What am I doing here?
ok i just found the H9 max

now thinking this might be more versatile than the bigsky
