Best arpeggiator for iOS

I already own Thesys and Cream. Both are great in their own way, but, at least for me, terribly awkward.
I'm looking at StepPolyArp. Any hint? Thank you

  • StepPolyArp is my favourite.

  • Check out Arpeggist standalone or Tera synth.

Look no further, you answered your own question.

  • How do you use steppolyarp for arperggios?

  • Arpeggist is my favorite. Very easy to use.

  • They are all good, but StepPolyArp has Link. I did get a email( when I enquired) from Virsyn, that they are looking into Link for there apps.

As I can judge from videos, Arpeggist has a nicer UI, and StepPolyArp looks a bit more complete, as for now.

Thesys I managed to master at last, but its UI is terrible (tho good on desktop). Cream has driven me mad. After Modstep my neurons are too itchy, maybe...

    @BiancaNeve thanks, really a nice app :)

  • For more straightforward and conventional arps I'd say Arpeggionome is probably the best, from the same guy who made Fugue Machine.

StepPolyArp is a little more unconventional, but very very good just as an all around MIDI controller. I use it for drums mostly.

  • I'd say Arpeggionome or Steppolyarp, as they seem the most fully featured, and Link compatibility is a huge help with any MIDI sequencer. I have neither, by the way.

I do have Arpeggist, which I find okay but not particularly inspiring. It's stable and has IAA sync, but essentially an exact copy of FM8's arp section, which means it feels more like a VST, not tailored for touch devices. The randomiser produces some of the poorest, unmusical arps imaginable. But, many like it, you may want to check a few YouTube clips of it...

Step poly gets the vote from me as well.

  • Arpeggionome is more performance oriented though which may or may not suit

Ah...good point. This is why it never really appealed to me

Whilst having always argued Cream is the better featured Arpeggiator , I have also always praised StepPolyArp generally & for its probability function which Cream lacks.

SPA's addition of Link had me using SPA again recently , & realising I had overlooked the importance of SPA's " Follow Song Position" for realtime sync if playing/jamming live input. This was/is previously possible with midi sync but I had missed it's importance , until I realised I was needing this function in Cream .
Follow Song Position quantises the input to the current beat of the bar , effectively triggering the arp sequence from wherever it should be playing in the bar when you start playing.
I've also realised for <=4 note harmonising from a single input note , SPA is easier & >4 is not possible with Cream .

so if you already have Cream , SPA has a couple of useful additional tricks Cream cant currently do . I still dont understand why some people seem to think SPA interface is any easier to manage than Cream though as SPA mashes its functions onto the single grid , with awkward pop-up step menu which I find more annoying than Cream's separate pages .

For non live input of notes I still think Cream is more powerful .

I'm still shamefaced & sorry for non -appearance of my promised Cream videos ; if they do ever arrive they will cover both comparisons with SPA , & why Thesys is a (bloody) step sequencer , not an arpeggiator.

  • The best ARP overall is Xfer's Cthulhu. The closest to that on Ios is StepPolyArp.

  • Xynthesizr can be used as a pretty nice arp as well. Only downside is its continuously running only. But the ease of programming makes up for it. Hopefully it will get Link soon, but it's clock sync is strong.

For the sake of completeness Arpist and Changeling are worth a look.

Oh and can anyone tell me if Theysis is any easier to read on iPad Pro

  • Scalegen and Gestrument can work as a very interesting Arpeggiator of sorts. I just got my hands on them and have a few tutorial videos coming soon.

  • I like Changeling but find it unstable at times. Would love to see Cthulhu come to iOS or something simular to Presonus Studio 1/3 Note FX tools, ARP and Chorder or Reason 9 dual ARP and chord options ideas appearing as apps on ios in the future. B Step sequencer is another option works great with Novation launch pad.

  • If you own Thesys and Cream you really don't need another arp in my opinion

  • I only own Arpeggionome and StepPolyArp, so can't compare for you. But you just can't go wrong with StepPolyArp. So much power there, but relatively easy to master.

How do you use clock sync with Xyn? Whenever it's in AUM, it never seems to respond to the Play button in the transport; I usually need to time it and press start in the app while listening to a beat. I KNEW there had to be a better way....

Not really. You have still a hard life w/o a controller

  • @Wally Cream is powerful indeed, but not easy to use, and its manual (second only to Modstep's for awkardness) stands to that. I need something simpler, especially in a performing situation

It's in the midi settings. You want it to receive clock in from Aum. I've never used it with Aum so you may have to tinker a bit. But that's the general idea, clock out in Aum with Xynthesizr receiving.

I was primarily recommending StepPolyArp , especially for liveplay sync ..

although ...do you have the ipad version manual ( in app is unfortunately for VST )

Thanks, I'll give it a look. i've used the VST w/o delving its depths

Just set it receive Clock in the MIDI settings. It doesn't receive stop/start commands. Not sure if Xynthesizr also receives IAA sync from its host....it's a great app but I rarely use it due to it being somewhat lacking in the sync department.
