nice feature, does it allow you to import your own samples yet?
Pretty cool, but I don't have it. Might look into it though. The real reason I'm posting is to ask how you got the finger tap visuals in the video.
@kobamoto , there's still no way to import samples. You're stuck with whatever they offer.
@funjunkie27 , there's an option within the app that lets you record video with audio or audio only. This was a video export that was saved to the camera roll. From there, I uploaded it to dropbox.
Thanks @DavidEnglish. I was hoping for something iOS that worked across multiple apps though.
I just had a bunch of fun with that one. And interestingly it sounded quite a bit different from @DavidEnglish jam.
imagine what it will sound like with your own samples.
Anyone know what the recording / performance legalities are with this one ?
Seems that it has great potential as a 'controller', it really would step up quite a few notches of creative usefulness if you could create your own sample sets, or have some degree of control over the different parts on screen, even just a mute option for the various parts. Have to admit to finding it a bit disconcerting to arrive at something tasty, only for the slightly stereotypical female vox 'ooohs & aaaahs' to seemingly appear from nowhere. Appreciate that might not be the devs end vision though.
All that said, in the highly unlikely chance that Autechre were to do one, then I'm in
I'm quite familiar with the devs, they love to use their own samples just like we do!
I was struck by how different what I had played was from PlayGround's demo of the same sound map. Looks like the app can support a fair amount of variation in playing style.
@kobamoto so when is this thing gonna let us make our own playgrounds with our own samples? Actually I'd be ok with just loading my own stuff into one out of a selection of template playgrounds initially. It could be a game changer. They could probably still do the IAP thing, the point would be you'd be getting new templates to use and lovely examples with which to acquaint yourself.
They could have a thing where you could record on first touch for a fixed recording length in bars, then quickly bounce that down onto one of the controls, add more sounds, do it again until you've basically got an entire song arrangement that you can deftly manipulate on the fly. Oh well.
you'd think...
they probably allow this already on their own personal copies of the app.... they're just like you and would love to do the things you've suggested I bet, but as far as allowing us to do it... I haven't heard any talk of it. I really love and I do mean literally love the fact that someone like 'us' is in the development world creating such instruments but...
by all means please ask them about it on their Facebook page and if there is any good news let us know.
Was going to start a thread 'Most in love but most frustrated?' (as regards apps, Nurse), but realized it would always be this one for me. If only you could get it in AB....or AS for that matter.....can be so unbearably pretty and is so alone...
The one thing that makes me look in awe towards playground instead of KRFT is the sounds. The programming of the sounds/samples or whatever they actually are is spot on. KRFT has exploaded in the last year and definitely has more musician appeal with under the hood control but Playground still somehow manages to be the top shelf sweet for me.
I never use it other than the occasional redownload play but it is very satisfying for that brief moment while I'm always a little dissatisfied after a play with KRFT. Could be that now I'd need to put some more work into it, or maybe the synth engine is a bit weak.
My daughter's just walked in and I lost my train of thought....
you were going to say that you're going to go nuts if hermutt lobby don't implement sample import!!!!
I hear you... I hear you..
So now she's playing with playground and I'm on my galaxy s4 trying to find the track...
Ah, and the visuals on playground are just amazing! And sorry folks who say it's all about the sound. With a massive screen in front of your face the graphics candy does matter.
Playground feels to me very much like Impaktor or Samplr. Apps with some genius alien force behind them. I wish they'd open up the bonnet to us.
She's been at it for the last 15 mins and it's not even a video game!
Now I want my iPad back!

@supadom Best Marketing Material/Poster In The World.
Adorable in every aspect.
Do you think anything else will ever be done with this (beyond adding more packs?)....evah?
they told me that it's gonna happen several times, last time was about a month ago
I'm guessing we will see it right around the time of that promised Samplr update, or when devs decide that midi is no longer some mysterious arcane force that only flows in one direction, or when Louis Martinez allows for sample import and audio export in his drum apps..... call me disenchanted, just don't call me on sunday morning while I'm eating pancakes.
Rule number one of iOS music: if the interface is particularly clever/genius/forward thinking, you can be rest assured the functionality will be criminally underdeveloped. See: Figure, iKaossilator, Playground
Maybe they're waiting for the sound packs revenue to die down before they allow sample import? It could be a number of clever reasons that we don't see from our end and guess work is as good as those pancakes. Yes they're yummy but once they're gone you have to get up and make some more, or run to the shop if you're out of flour. Unless it's Sunday eve, then you're screwed.
But seriously. Probably only allowing to add samples wouldn't really be enough. They'd have to open the whole thing: moving elements, control lfo's, scales, interactions. Pretty much what KRFT are doing
Thanks, home made, in all senses.
A minute after that we went to the music room and put it through big speakers (where she said 'daddy it is loud' and then 'daddy can you turn it up' by the time I started playing drums). After the first jam I loaded Inia by H Lobby and got Impaktor out where she asked for a mic and its all gone quite cool. I've videoed it so I will drop a snipped when time allows.
Thanks guys for making me turn towards PG this morning.
Alex and krft are commendable not only for what they are doing now but also for their ability to take a second look at their own outlook. I have allot of respect for the krft developers and I believe they've earned it.
that said Playground is a whole different ball of wax and I agree with you about it needing more than simply sample import, but for the kind of background that the hermutt lobby themselves come from sample import and export is all that is needed while waiting for the ideal and proper progression of the app. What I mean by that for example is the use of the turntable as an instrument, or any sampler for that matter... we can make playground do allot with sample import alone. One could get all of your samples in tune before you drop them in and go to town uncovering those hidden gems ... these guys are deliciously talented, gods among men....
Love your enthusiasm here. I come from the other side of the fence in as far as I am more interested in getting sound out...but it is most certainly a thing unto itself and kudos for that.
no sample import? < it's a toy
wake me up when the dev realizes we are musicians
Editor will be available, don't know when.
I don't know, guys. I've been waiting for playground to progress like y'all and worked with the KRFT dudes. While I think they missed the mark with KRFT by looking at the conversion of the desktop pro crowd to iOS, and that the sounds are too EDMish (and require too much tweaking to get out of EDM land), the fact is that they got way closer to the promised land than playground looks to be given the Helmut lobby track record. Have you even imported samples and set up surfaces to play them? Maybe the issue is that Helmutt sets up the samples and the surfaces so that's it is a fully formed creation and KRFT leaves too much work to the creator?
I still think the KRFT guys need a free play only app and a big name act to create a killer tune that followers can remix on their own...
Fair.
