If you like Droneo, you'll love... ?

Hey,

I picked up Droneo a couple months ago on a whim based on a thread here. And, I really love that little app. Deceptively simple, but left to it's own, with a few tweaks... generatively makes some very interesting streams of sound.

Was curious... what apps would those who also dig Droneo recommend that would compliment it? Other "drone" apps?

Oh and Noatickle, wotja and moodscaper

  • Poly is pretty cool. Very easy to get some serious polyrhythms going; it's free with IAPs for midi and audio in — which actually sounds bloody fantastic. Why haven't I done this yet???

But Skip, at some point you're going to have to wrest control from these machines!

  • Also, Mixtikl now that it's fixed. Those guys have been making generative music apps since the 80's. Anyone remember Koan Pro and Koan X?

When you refer to Mixtikl's "fixing" — you mean the insane and gratuitous IAPs that Tim Webb expounded on? (Beautiful rant, by the way....)

  • No we mean the irritating way it fired up every time we tried to use audio copy /paste.

Errrr, you've lost me there. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, but I can't find IAP's direct from Mixtikl 7.

as BiancaNeve said, the fix I was referring to, concerned Twisted Wave and other apps, which would flag up an annoying message asking if a user wanted to export into Mixtikl, when present.

  • I think I've got all of these. Need to re-explore what I already have I reckon. ;)

Love Space Vibe. Drone FX is very cool, but I sure wish that guy would update it. I'd pay for an update I think. Excellent drones.

I've got Poly and his other one Caelestis. Love them both and bought the IAPs for each. I wonder if there's a way to feed them my own samples instead of just midi synths?

I've got Mixtikl 6, or maybe it's 5. Whichever was the last one before they wanted you to buy yet another one. Got tired of that game and gave up on them. I like the app, but didn't like being hit up to pay for an upgrade so often.

Ok... well, maybe I've already got most of the biggies. What I love about Droneo is that you just start with a few parameters, tweak them until you have something kinda sorta working, then let it got for about 20mins and see what evolves. Really cool. Yes, I'm easily entertained. ;)

  • This is a VERY cool app. Universal and free? Very impressive. Had a quick play and sent stuff via midi too. Gonna have to devote some time to reading this one's manual. :) Thanks!

    Shoom

I've got shoom. Shoom is a beautiful thing. :)

Related to Shoom... recently I've been reading some horror, and binge-watching horror films. Not because I'm a fan, but because I might want to try my hand at it, or rewrite a story I have as a twisted horror flick instead of a trippy true account.

I'm not sure I have it in me or not, but I've been taking notes on what I think works, and what doesn't. One key element that really helps compensate for low-end production and novice acting/directing/editing skills... is VERY good sound. It's surprising to me just how much great soundtrack work can make up for other seemingly more important elements in cinema, and in particular the Horror genre.

Mentioning this because I think Shoom would be a killer app to use for suspense, psycho, horror films. Particularly, because once you've found your sound, you can kind of play it along while watching the visual if you need to.

  • There are 4 excellent generative apps developed by Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers, called 'Trope', 'Bloom' & 'Scape', and for iPhone only, 'Air'. Unfortunately they are stand-alone apps, no midi in/out, no AB or IAA, but even still, great fun with hypnotic long generations of sound, and visually entertaining as well.

  • Shoom is still a favourite of mine. I must revisit soon and make some more patches.

Sent stuff via midi? It's like one of those Locked Room games! After tapping around for a while, I finally managed to find a Tempo slider. Then it vanished, and I have no idea how I engaged it! You found midi?

You have to look at the manual on the app's site. The midi stuff is VERY full-featured too. It's set/controlled in the main iOS settings. http://app.jasonjsnell.com/refraktions/manual/

  • Similar to SpaceVibe is Giant Isopod. Perhaps a more uncontrollable noise machine than SpaceVibe, but it has its place.

Ooooh! That looks fun. Not too price either. Might have to give it a whirl. thx!

Yes, have Virtual ANS. Another one I should revisit how that I better know how stuff works in general. Same goes for Borderlands. Love that one, but in the past was very hit/miss for me.

Using various sound sources and putting them through AmazingApps or Apesoft. I'd also recommend, more than the aforementioned apps, Fieldscaper and Soundscaper. Record almost anything and process it through the filters and LFOs galore (well 3 of both - but it's enough). If you want a bit of experimental fun iVCS3 - knobs and stuff. More mayhem you say:

    BeepBoop
    Ellipsynth (same guy as droneo)
    Samvada

I've done the Poly app into synth thing it's great! But, one of my favorite tricks is to run Xuthesizr at a high bpm with one of the randomize settings on and one - four beats selected firm them to evolve in.

As a rule slowing down my recording can create a drone.

  • Some (all?) of these are quite odd, but odd in a good, noise-making sort of way:

    Conform
    Hexaglyphics
    Field
    Soundbow
    Thicket
    Physynth
    Caelestis
    Pixivisor
    Earhoof
    VIrtual ANS
    Bitwiz

You're welcome! It's pretty awesome when you make it MIDI stuff.

  • I have dL'd Refraktions and read the manual...is a Network Connection the only way to send & receive midi? In the instructions and through trial & error, I see no way to directly send midi to other apps on my iPad. I am using an iODock, but I've had no luck getting midi to transmit. I would love to use Refraktions for midi out, but it's not much use to me if I have to be connected to a computer to do it.

Go to the iOS settings app and scroll down until you see your installed apps and tap on Refraktions. From there you can setup the MIDI out, among other things.

    Arghhhhhhhhh. No AB or IAA.

How about TC-11, have you tried that one? The recent multi panel control has taken this up several notches.

Yes, I have done all that, it's pretty basic stuff, tried various channels etc. I can trigger Refraktions sounds with my external keyboard, but I get no response from apps when Refraktions is running. The manual only talks about midi via network connection. So if anyone is using Refraktions midi out and not on a network, please let me know how it's done.
