A straight forward DAW, does it even exist in 2016 ??
Seeking a straight forward (as possible) option for using a few apps like patterning & moog 15 along with a few wave files of vocal - guitar etc (flown in from the studio DAW) ...to work from iPad a bit on the road. ...& then, get it back to the DAW for later work.
Considering Cubasis, Auria pro & Garageband.
I also understand Korg gadget is possibly the most straight forward option for its clarity / uncluttered approach possibly? But , then audio files and outside apps like moog etc are not supported if I'm correct.
Appreciate any guidance.
Just hate the idea of adding any daw apps that are less than straight forward or introduce more complications to the studio.

Straightforward immediately brings MultiTrackStudio to mind. Oriented towards getting stuff done with minimal fuss, without sacrificing depth if you want to go deep. Cubasis and Auria Pro are tremendous, but tend to coax me into tweaking and finickiness (not the fault of the apps...). Something about MTS's brutalist GUI and track-centric ethic rings a bell when you say "straightforward".
Don't get me wrong, I use Cubasis and Audia Pro, but my current workflow isn't straightforward at all...
If you got an iDevice when Garageband was free you might as well download it and give it a whirl. It's $4.99 now, which is the cheapest route to a full(ish) DAW of the three you mention, but read on.
Cubasis LE can be downloaded and run in demo mode for free. If you happen to have one of the supported pieces of hardware that will unlock it then you can get more features, or pay for the full version (which occasionally goes on sale). List of supported hardware for free extended features (there are lots of brands listed) - http://www.steinberg.net/en/products/mobile_apps/cubasis_le/compatible_hardware.html
Auria Pro recently had a sale but it's over so full price would be your only option there.
Correct

I typically recommend GarageBand to those starting out. It's cheap as chips, relatively easy to use, and well documented. Once you're comfortable with GarageBand, it will be easier to decide what the next DAW will be. Added bonus: the IAP is free.

As soon as a saw this thread I thought 'MultiTrackStudio'. I use it for all my ideas and laying down tracks. For mixing and editing Auria Pro is better. The best thing about MultiTrackStudio is that it's extremely CPU efficient. Auria is a pain on my Mini 2 and I have to freeze tracks a lot when mixing, not so with MultiTrackStudio.
Dat non-mobiile friendly online help manual tho...
Does MultiTrackStudio have built-in help?
I do find Cubasis a pretty straightforward DAW compared to Auria Pro (which needs much better than ipad air cpu imho) but if you are looking to do lots of midi editing the current version of Cubasis has a challenging piano roll navigation, to put it politely. This is said to be rectified in an update due out at some moment in the (nearish?) future. Depending on your timeline it may be worthwhile to see what the next Cubasis update holds.
Auria shows as still on sale for me. In U.S. store.
If it's still on sale, buy it: a steal for the price. But I really though this boat had sailed already...
OK now showing Auria Pro sale is over. Worth it at full price still IMO.
Yes. Under 'Studio' go to 'Manual'.
The last app that comes to my mind when someone says straight forward is MTS but I will grant that if you buy all the IAPs it's got a pretty good feature set.
II think I may be it's only fan on here but I still think Xewton Music Studio is pretty hard to beat for simplicity while still being powerful enough to get stuff done it's even usable on small phone screens.
I'd recommend Auria if you want a long term solution. GarageBand is good, but missing a lot of useful features so most will outgrow it quickly.
If it's still on sale I'd snap up Auria.
I capture intermediate results in either Multitrack-DAW (not to be confused with the afforementioned 'Studio') or Audioshare and exchange by WLan with the main DAW on PC.
It works in both directions, I may even move a mix back to the iPad to track additional instruments or vocals because I find the process more convenient under IOS.
(but I'm a audio-only guy, midi is used just temporarily and not tracked)
Multitrack-DAW is the most simple approach with exactly the functionality of a multitrack reel-to-reel, including punch in/out (plus IAA and Audiobus support).
It's easy to ignore the effect and mixdown features as they just don't show up on the main surface.
I wasn't aware. Seems this should be a top consideration. excellent!
Also makes perfect sense to give a try considering pricing. I'm assuming MTS & GB both allow simple incorporation of apps like patterning, moog 15 …aufx etc.
?
I should say that my main Studio DAW is Nuendo ...(ie: Cubase)
...So there's that as far as familiarity goes.
I basically use it as a glorified tape machine though that's based around a console, analog HW, plate reverb etc.
(though I do use vst instruments & kontakt midi stuff quite a bit as well)
Kicking myself for not getting with the sale recently but, no biggie at its current price as well.
Have to consider but still, I like the idea of simple so MTS is interesting (but not as cheap as GB of course
This is what I'm talking about! ….something straight that brings an efficient "working solution---in both directions---
Having tape in the studio, more straight reel to reel functionality is very attractive to me.
I should take a look at Multitrack-DAW as well it seems.
So it allows apps & audio, + back and forth integration fairly well ? I'll check it out.
All great thoughts and much appreciate this conversation !
Multitrack DAW is very nice and comes with the prospect of a big and cool update in the next few months.
I had hesitated to answer at all, because they're all straightforward (once you surmount whichever learning curve...)
Per @Telefunky, @OscarSouth MT Daw is far and away the most direct route - if you aren't sequencing midi. I think I had assumed you needed midi sequencing...curious what that update will bring
Yeah, me too! I updated the 'Link in a DAW' thread with the latest info that I could find.
For tracking audio, it's hard to beat MultiTrack DAW.
@chet.d the 'integration part' is Multitrack'S WebDAW server that's quite smart in publishing project content.
I have a bookmark in my browser and set the download dir to a kind of audio inbox folder which is linked in my DAW.
I'm not qualified to answer as I don't own MTS and I haven't kept up on GB. I do recall there being bugaboos with GB in regards to working "in both directions" and sharing.
I do know the folks in this thread who are recommending MTS are experienced and knowledgeable, and I trust their advice. Maybe give MTS Lite (desktop/laptop) a spin and see how you get on with it?
Better yet, get them both!
Garageband. Inexpensive, very easy, has a lot of really nice instruments, can also record audio, has great amp sims for recording all styles of guitar and bass, has Ableton Live-like live loops and its projects can be opened in Desktop Garageband or even Logic Pro X.
Thanks for the clarification.
Looks like I'll with go MTS or MT-DAW and give it a spin. Though MT-DAW being cheaper, makes sense to try 1st.
In my case considering either,
Taking a guit / voc (or key ) tracks from the Studio DAW (that was tracked to tape).. > iPad, add an app or two mobile > back to studio DAW.
or,
Stating on ipad (like an instrumental) > flying into Studio DAW to complete.
I guess many of you you do similar thing though. This is great info to know via y'alls experiences.
I've mounted an iPad mini-2 on the mic stand (K&M tilted holder) between a vocal and a guitar mic. Very convenient to operate and 100% noiseless.
MTD can set punch in/out as 2 markers and if you select a section on the timeline that extends a bit beyond those points you have your preroll/postroll settings.
It will then loop through that section saving take after take.
Press 'stop' if you think everything is ok and if a new track already started just revoke the last record and your 'perfect' one will be right in place.
In case you change your mind later, the other ones are still available in the 'bin' of the project. Pretty cool thing... doesn't need more.
Another favourite feature of nine is the ability to play back a section and simultaneously scroll forward/backward to the next point of interest. No need to wait for the waveform display, playback works immediately. I usually record 15-40 minutes, so it takes a moment to generate the waveform display.
@BiancaNeve Thanks for the information about this app. I've been looking for something like this.
From what I understand, FL Studio Mobile is Xewton Music Studio and with a different skin and IAP. They also offer an HD version for $5 more.
I haven't checked the prices but if that's true then buying the cheap version will be a cheap way of getting flm3 when it's released which is a totally different app from image line. There's some screen shots of the pc plugin version on another thread here somewhere.
I dunno if flm3 is going to be a free upgrade, but yes, you can run the beta as a PC plug-in on FL Studio Producer and up.
Apologies for the semi-threadjack.
Yes it will be a free upgrade and both the phone only and hd (universal) version will apparently upgrade to it.
To further complicate matters, I'm going to throw another name in the hat.
Looptical is another dark horse DAW. I haven't heard anything from MooCowMusic lately, but there is a hell of a lot there for $5.
+1 for Xewton Music Studio - bundled with the SSO Symphony Soundfont, plus there's a thread on their forum where you can download a LOT of free instruments for Xewton. Probably the cheapest DAW on iOS with Audio and Midi, and their piano roll is pretty intuitive once you get used to the interface.
+1 for GarageBand for the Drummer alone, plus the other goodies.
