  • @Brambos, do you still have plans to make your AUs available in the Auria Store? There are reports here and there about AU being still underdeveloped by Apple (check out the latest video from Jacob Haq), while Auria seems to use a more stable format.

If you do it, I'd gladly repurchase in the Auria Store the apps of yours that I already have for a smoother user experience.

  • I've updated my PhaseMaker bank. 72 presets now and some changes to some of the old ones.

Cool beans! For others: if you're importing this folder and want to get the 'changed old ones' erase them from your user preset list before importing. Since this is officially a backup system it won't overwrite presets with the same name that already exist in the user preset folder.

  • @brambos The max modulation index of phasemaker is is much lower than that of Dx7- and Tx-802. For this reason it becomes impossible to carry most of the typical FM sounds (deep bass, bells with high harmonic content, ...). I own a Yamaha TX-802 and I tried to create a simple sound, 1 carrier - 1 modulator and frequency ratio 1: 1 and volume of modulator from 0 to MAX. Later I realized a sound with the same settings with phasemaker.
I made a video that shows how the harmonic content produced by phasemaker is much less than the 802 tx (dx7) and the sound is very poor of brillance
Here is the link of the video test: the first sound is phasemaker , the second is Yamaha TX-802 https://youtu.be/lLZV5fbNGNk My suggestion is to increase the maximum value of modulation and enter a simple positive or negative Key tracking for more or less bright sound under the keyboard

This was already introduced in version 1.1 with the "strong" operator type. Check it out!

I've just installed the latest update on my iPhone 4s 9.3.5.

iOS supports AUv3 on iPhone 5S and higher (and iPad 4+, iPod Touch 6G+).

Strangely enough Apple allows incompatible devices to install these AU apps anyway. I would block it if I could, but all I can do is put a warning in the appstore text blurb.

Your other two apps run perfectly on my iPhone5. Do you suppose Phasemaker will too? Any black friday love comin'? ;)

On Friday and Saturday, Phasemaker will be 50% off.

If you're still on the fence... here's your chance!

    B)

  • I certainly dont need any more synths but this one is sooo pretty, especially on the iphone, Im gonna have to get it. I feel like a fool sitting on a fence who sees a girl walk by and while following her I loose balance. That's my excuse sorted. Heady pre Black Fridays.
Also, I really dont get FM, Ill have to go back a watch another Tim Webb explanation, his FM4 vid was great.

thanks for this, as i'm clueless with fm synthesis and am studying other things at the moment. downloaded and unzipped. now,...how do i get them into phasemaker ?

  • @brambos good job with the randomizer, things can take a wrong turn so easily with fm but most of what i get with the randomizer is pretty useable and have gotten some really tasty boards of canada shifty pads

  • Could not resist this little beauty!
    Thanks @brambos !

No need to unzip. Simply open the zipfile with Phasemaker (use "Open in") and the patches will automatically added to the user presets list.

  • tried that about 5 times and as soon as i click open in phasmaker it blinks and i go to my main iphone screen. both dropbox and phasemaker remain open in background but when i go to the user patches only the 4-5 i have made are there. the blink seems like something is wrong.

  • tried it on my ipad pro as well on iphone 6 pus.

Same on my Air2, but the presets have loaded. They are there when I reopen Phasemaker.

I'm looking into it. I also see 'the blink' on one of my testdevices with this zipfile, but the presets are indeed added to the user folder correctly.

Loading the presets worked for me on both an iPad Air 2 and an iPhone 6 with iOS 10.1.1. You need to select the name of the preset in AUM to be able to access the user presets as they don't show up via the menu presets which only has the factory presets.

Indeed, good point! User presets are accessible via the plugin's own plugin manager only. This enables user presets to be used in across all AU hosts you have on your system.

I'm sounding like a broken record, but Apple should really sort out the AU preset handling because it's becoming confusing for everyone; and there's nothing us DAW/plugin devs can do about it until Apple clarify who's supposed to handle which aspects of user preset management.

See this has been answered by others here, but would just like to add, that it really is quite an easy synth to program without total in depth knowledge of the synthesis method employed. If you do ever get the time, just spend a while with it, you may be surprised how easy it is.

If you know what an envelope does in general, then you're half way there to having a dabble. You may already know how to craft the basics of bass or string sounds using envelopes in Subtractive Synthesis and it's pretty much the same goes here. Make use of the 'Simple' page to get something started. Set up an envelope type that gives you the sound you are thinking of. Use the more basic logarithms and just try different waves and different ratio values.

You will soon learn that you get to know what you can do without even needing to know why or how the synthesis method works. Yes it's great to get more understanding, but not essential. Just have fun with it like many do with Subtractive Synthesis :)

hey, not sure i understood. i checked the user presets in standalone as well as within aum and only the few i have made are there. on the ipad i didn't make any but i did a kind of greatest hits of the factory presets. about 10. could it be that the flicker is caused because i am trying to download mr fruitbats 1-70 and i have 1-5(10), those used slots messing it up? easy enough because i like the ones i did but could redo them.

No, that shouldn't matter. They'll be added to the presets you already have, and it will not overwrite existing presets with identical names (because this is essentially a backup system). I need to look into what's going on.

yup, will do. have been working with subractive for a good few years now, nowhere near a master programmer but i can get close enough to what i want usually. never got into fm due to it's ambassador sounds, not my cup of tea, pianos, basses, etc. but i do love it for trippy ambient shifty stuff.

I tend to use multiple presets of Phasemaker in AUM. I dial back the reverb of all of them and use a single channel of AUFX Space.

  • yup, used xnthesizer into phasemaker into aum with aufx space and frobulator (unsung heroe) last night and recorded a few minutes which is going to be the start of something new. sounds awesome.

being mobile i can now take my time to get things perfect before i record a pass. normally i have to deal with what i can accomplish quicker because i know i only have 30 more minutes in my studio or whatever. or because i am in play mode. preproduction done outside the studio, then i can sit down and just play when in. so great.

Yes! This really is where I'm at now I no longer have a studio. Making music anywhere is such a great freedom

  • Is anybody else having issues, when loading Phasemaker into AUM, where certain buttons on Phasemaker are unresponsive?

I use an iPhone 6. Specifically, Quick, utility, the expression section, pitch envelope > attack, LFO: delay, shape, space: chorus/reverb.

works fine in Audiobus and in standalone mode.

  • Just wondering if anyone can tell me how to make AUM remember which preset I was using in each Phasemaker AU instance? I save a file in AUM with the presets I want loaded, but every time I load it up, I'm back to 80s piano for every Phasemaker instrument. Thanks!

I think the dev may have responded to this elsewhere, but as I can't remember where it is, I will attempt to remember what was said. It's basically something to do with the way AUx techie stuff is at the moment. So the dev compromised to give us something the AU spec does not make clear. You will find that saving in AUM is actually saving your sounds of the PhaseMaker, it just shows the first preset. A bit of an annoyance, but nothing that's not surmountable with some clever save naming routines if you need to know what presets are really used. Hope I summed it up correctly :)

@gleandibson I've also run into that UI bug (Phasemaker on AUM, iPhone 5 iOS 10.1.1). Here's a temporary workaround while @brambos gets a chance to look into it:

Make sure that when you load the Phasemaker UI for the first time (that is, when you tap on the phasemaker icon once loaded on an AUM track) your iPhone is on landscape orientation. Failing to do so will make the UI to not respond to those tap events happening outside that area originally covered by the portrait mode.

Fortunately enough, this bug doesn't seem to be present in any of the other @brambos AUs.
