what's your top 3 most used iPhone drum/percussion app??

  • I could possibly have the least need of anyone here of a panoply of music apps & expertise to cover a wide range of musical who-knows-what, but I get the majority of my drum/percussion needs from GB, and I'll use ThumbJam once in a while if I need some timpani or the like; DrumJam can help out in unexpected ways (as in my recent work on a cover of Be Bop Deluxe's 'New Precision'). The problem is: all the apps I've auditioned over time. I can't keep up with what their capabilities are & even though I have a new iPhone 6 w/ 64G I cannot keep a bunch of apps around - my artwork takes up a good piece of the rest!

  • Funkbox
    Elastic Drums
    Drum Jam

    Funkbox

Man, I have held out on Funkbox for sooo long. I guess I kept hoping it would see a sale price like the early days, but it never happened. I'm also well stocked with vintage drum machine emulations, so that doesn't help.

  • Also, this thread has convinced me to buy Frum. I knew people liked it, but not "top 3" liked it. :)

    I'm iTunes broke, but I ain't sweating $3 if it's that good.

does Frum have audiobus, or inter app, or a way to get audio out into other apps?

  • Man, this is extremely hard to nail down only 3!

    (1) Rock Drum Machine
    (2) SeekBeats
    (3) (tie) MoDrum & FingerBeat

I went with #3 because while Gadget (as of early this year) is very powerful on iPhone, and apps like Elastic Drum and DrumJam have more depth, MoRum and FingerBeat have a portability and convenience to them that wins out when it comes to the types of situations where I would actually use the iPhone to make a beat. We're talking "quick hit" musical experiences when I'm away from home and my iPad and I need the functionality to put a loop together quickly and bounce it to another app.

No, but I'll roll the dice on a future update and take advantage of the intro price. I also have an iConnectMIDI2+.

You can always use a Y-cable or adapter if you don't mind the conversion or the fuss.

  • Frum updated to include a record function. You can open the track (not stems) in another app. Pretty painless, but it might need a trim.

I'm another fan of MoDrum for its quick hit capabilities. Instant satisfaction.

  • DD iPhone port coming...a ways to go but I'm on it!

    I believe it's really good.

    Cool !!

  • @technemedia what!!!! Awesome! Back when I was messing around with Oscillab, I remember thinking "this is such a cool way to represent music (waves and such), if only there was an app that took this to its logical extreme" then I read about different drummer and it pretty much checks all the boxes. Can't wait to try it out.

Holy crap! No way! You are awesome! Will this be released as a universal update to DD, or a separate app? Cuz if it's going universal, I'll buy it right now!!!

  • I still use DM1 tbh. It might have its issues but it has stem export and Dropbox. Good enough for me! It's got a cool randomiser too so it's really easy to spice up beats. I use it for top loops and glitchy breaks a lot.

  • @technemedia Sir, you just broke me! :)

    Fave 3
    1. Was Rock Drummer
Now a toss up between Soft Drummer and Funk Drummer
    2. Seek Beats
    3. DrumJam
    (4. If you must know Finger Beat which just edges out Elastic Drums)

    So there's like 7 drum machines :D

Very similar to my most often used use cases. Funkbox is usually perfect for jamming in the living room with the fam.

What? Yay!! That is so cool.

I bought DD last week and have been totally unable to put it down. Such a cool app. Twisted my brain around into a pretzel, but in a good way. :)

I'm not sure this will become my favorite drum machine, but its already my favorite arpeggiator, and looks to become my favorite way of breaking out of the ruts I so often fall into. You really have made a groundbreaking app!

  • To the OP:

    • MoDrum. I get a smile and a good beat out if it in minutes every time I fire it up.
    • RuisMaker in AUM driven by Infiniter Looper
    • GarageBand Drummer

    That is very good news.

DD is great for pointing at Gadget (with Link) and coming up with interesting phrases / patterns.

Would love to do that with one hand on the iPhone while walking down the street dodging lampposts.

Ironically, so far I've found it much better for coming up with non-drum parts.

  • Hmm, another nod for MoDrum. You guys may put me on to that one, as well.

  • Gadget
    iElectribe

then tied third between DrumJam and Elastic Drums.

Although FRUM might end up taking one of those spots.

  • MoDrum is indeed a very tasty morsel. :)
It's not serious or involved drum machine, but it's just real fun for whipping up quick beats. Only for electronic drum sounds not acoustic, though.

Someone needs to make a "collision avoidance" app, but then people would complain about it needing access to the camera. :D

Patterning - pretty much all the time.
Very occasionally SeekBeats and Elastic Drums.

Patterning is really great, but still waiting for the IPhone version.

    Ditto!
