Best Drum iOS Drum Machine for playing LIVE ?
Having recently watched (several times) DJ Mallorca Lee enthusiastically appraise the new Roland TR-09 & TB-03 on YouTube it got me thinking about what the best iPad drum machine would be for live beat creation/improvisation (as opposed to sitting down and preparing sequences or clips for) launching.
After thinking about and revisiting the many I have on my iPad- I have come to the conclusion that for me the answer is - by some considerable distance- the DM1. I have to say- I have used it in the past- but this process has taught me that I had only been scratching the surface of it and I had vastly underrated it. But I am now quite thrilled to have rediscovered it and started to become acquainted with it's potential.
Part of the reason for this post is to alert others to this- in case you might be in a similar position. But I am also interested to know- as I now see what a glaring omission I almost made with this- there may well be others I have done the same with.
So what is your favorite iOS drum machine to rely on specifically for playing in a live- produce it as you play- situation?
Comments
I never owned DM1. Heard good things about it though. I do own DM2 and look forward to the update.

As far as "best" for live use, I guess that depends on your genre and whether you need acoustic, electric, or both.
Pre program that ish yung blood #tupac out
thuglife
I don't understand these replies - kindly elucidate.
Word life yung blood. #1

I believe @johnn is telling you to program your drum parts ahead of time.
My post below his was just me being cheeky with a "paradigm shift."

That's reassuring. Thank's for taking the time. It's good to have a laugh. I must get myself a Star Trek dictionary in order that I can join in.
Roger that!
To be honest.. I really don't know. I've wondered the same thing myself. I like the way "KiNK" performs his live sets, but I think he relies on ableton and build loops on pre programmed loops. I like "patterning" tho, I think I could build a live set off of that app.
For myself jamming (so similar needs to live use):
iSpark fits my bill for ease of use to manipulate on the fly, yet I have had a few (very few really) minor stability issues.
Patterning can be manipulated on the fly, but not as easy imo as above. Stable as a rock for myself.
Now really I'm looking at these as individual apps. If you intend to bring any complex midi or audio routings into the proceedings, you will have to test with what you want to use.
I second iSpark for on the fly live beat making. I play it live with a DrumKAT, and I have the SparkLE controller next to me for live looping and manipulation. iSpark's multi-velocity-layered samples, plus tweakable drum synth and a decent sequencer with Ableton LINK are what does it for me.
Also, Ruismaker and Ruismaker FM have a great tactile feel for playing live.
I've started doing more live on the fly sequencing with my Mac and Ableton Live, as I've tried and tried to find a midi looper that works for me on iOS but Ableton is just so powerful and does exactly what I need. Mostly now sequencing on Ableton Live and driving apps hosted in AUM.
Sounds like a cool live show @gburks. You have any video?
Also, you wouldn't happen to be selling a drumkat EZ on eBay right now?
I've only played a few shows and was so concerned about keeping my gear communicating and stitched together that I couldn't think about recording! Hopefully I'll be able to start capturing some live shows.
That's my EZ. I ended up buying the full DrumKAT because I needed more external trigger inputs. Haven't yet posted the other stuff yet, hence my question about eBay vs Reverb etc. https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/15499/gear-for-sale-best-online-place-to-sell-it-ebay-reverb
I like DM1 for this as well. Think the main benefit over something like patterning or iSpark when doing it in real time is the ability to see all of the drum hits at once. There aren't many apps like this. Diode and Funkbox come to mind. Sure there are others I'm not thinking of but yeah, agreed that DM1 is solid for this.
The devs behind DM2 claim to be "the core team that brought you DM1," so it will be interesting to see how things play out. Again, I'm stoked for the update.
If I was to consider a drum machine for my live set I'd go for gadget even though I'm not entirely sure how does that work with external triggers if at all.
Impaktor of course is another one
However if you're talking pre-programmed why not just use a clip launcher? Much lighter footprint. Novation springs to mind.
If you or anyone else has any advice or recommendations for an audio clip launcher with a proper MIDI implementation, please contribute to this thread.

I think dm1/2 have a really nice interface for coming up with stuff live
You can trigger notes and automate cc's no problem, but you can't launch clips or scenes. And only the NanoKONTROL Studio can control the transport. No other MIDI controller can do it as far as I know.
Wouldn't Gumdrops fall into this category also? It has got me thinking, that for a live performance, there's nothing less appealing than listening to someone having to populate a drum pattern instrument by instrument, then onto another pattern starting at blanks again. You'd want some sort of algorithmic assistance as your start point, surely?
Think that's just the thing—particularly with multi-touch, being able to toggle any steps for all instruments at once in apps like DM1 means that you can go from zero to beat in a few seconds.

You would think so - but some (very skilled) people treat drum machines as actual live instruments- I'm sure they will have a few patterns up their sleeves- for when other things need their attention
Ok, got it.
Also, if if were not talking pre-composed loops the new elastic drums update is set to raise the bar considerably. Looks like the developer has a lot of time on his hands and is on a mission to create the best drumming solution on iOS.
Take a look at this vid
That elastic drums update looks brilliant. Looking forward to that one.
Very nice. Currently designing a kicking machine for my not using this app as much as I should. Perhaps if the colors could be customized I would feel more at home? I always feel as though I'm not drinking enough water after using it..
