Video production tip request

I've done a few YT videos at this point, but I'd be interested in hearing from others who have advise on how best to produce them. My current setup uses a Mac Mini (running Sierra) and an iPad Mini2 running iOS 9.3.) I use the lightning cable to connect my iPad to my Mac Mini and record the iPad audio and video using QuickTime. In parallel, I use a webcam mic for the voiceover into Audacity. I then combine the two using Cutecut Pro and add transitions, and graphic and text overlays.

It works well, for the most part, and I'm sure the webcam mic is the weak link. The process is slow though, and syncing the voiceover to the iPad A/V is a bit of a pain, so I'm hoping others might have some other approaches that would help me improve.

Note that I would rather use the screen capture approach, rather than an external video camera, since smaller details aren't captured as well and fingers get in the way.

  • Yeah, most webcam mics are shite. What other mics do you have available? Smartphone? Laptop?

  • I do have an iPhone 5S and a 4 and some condenser mics. The latter would probably be the best option, but they're not very convenient with where I usually produce videos. The iPhone might be a better solution. just record into AudioShare, EQ as needed, and upload to my Mac Mini. I just need to ensure I have enough storage to cover the length of the video. Thanks for that @telecharge!

  • Here's a list of the best screen recorders. The problem is they don't tell you if it's Windows or Mac. (I'm a Windows Weenie.) But there may be something there for you...

  • I like to use a lav mic, and most of all, I like to compress my dialogue track up to max so that people can hear me adequately. I'll often use a clapperboard type of app on the ipad to sync the tracks, before the app in question gets up and started, then top and tail it as necessary later once it is all synced up and compressed. I also, when I'm not using a lav mic, use a variety of other mics I have for such purposes, all embarrassingly cheap, some quite good. For example, I quite like my Sony ECM-MS907 (got cheap) just out of shot, but if you're not going to have your face in shot, just put it in front of you about a hand-stretch distance away from your mouth and slightly below beam from your breath output direction. Another mic I like to use is my Sony ECM-S959, which is even better than the 907. However, I've also used a stupidly cheap shotgun mic with good results, but not as warm and full as the sonys.

  • I've also used my Zoom Q2HD now and then, set to mono. And a while ago, my Zoom H2n.

  • @telecharge - I think those are all desktop screen capture apps. I'm talking about capturing the iPad A/V. Quicktime is fine for that, although there isn't much in the way of control for the audio input.

Thanks for the tips @u0421793 - I figured....and was hoping that you would chime in. What lav mics have you had good experiences with? I hadn't considered a clapperboard app. That might help. Searching in the app store, the one you're using looks like DigiSlate. Is that right?

(UPDATE: This mic requires plug-in power. Will not work via headphone port on iphone/ipad) The Sony ECM-CS3 does a decent job for a budget lav. Sounds way better than it's low cost would imply.https://amazon.com/Sony-ECMCS3-Omnidirectional-Stereo-Microphone/dp/B0058MJX4O/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1476369324&sr=1-1&keywords=sony+ecm+cs3

  • Screenflow works good for capturing audio/screen of ipad/mac - even has built in AU access, so you can edit that way.

  • @skiphunt - I checked out a few YT vids which use the Sony. I think that would be a nice improvement to what I've been using, and the price is right. Thanks for that!

@Ocsprey - I'll take a look at Screenflow. Does that save the video to the iPad? If so, that might not work, as I'm usually pretty tight on space, however the AU sounds interesting.

No, you run it from desktop, here's a few screenshots of some functions:

I got that one a couple years ago. Used it a couple times while traveling, and forgot about it. Had seen it reviewed positively many times with good YT examples. About a month ago I found it in my bag and tried it out with a new field recorder I'd just bought. Really impressed with how good it sounded for being so inexpensive.

I'm finding this more and more, that if you do a little more than the average amount of research before buying, you can find budget gear that almost performs as well as gear costing 100X more. This one isn't a $600 Sennheiser lav, but for $15, it's very good. I think I paid about $25 for it at the time.

IMPORTANT: One thing to verify though, make sure it doesn't have to have plug-in power. My tests and use were with handheld recorders that provide plug-in power.

  • @Ocsprey - Just checked it out. No doubt that should improve things, but given my current budget, I'll look for alternatives for now. I'll add this to a birthday wishlist though!

  • Thanks for the heads up on the plug-in power @skiphunt. That would be a showstopper for me, as my only recorder doesn't seem to provide power. I think I'll try recording on my iPhone first and see how far that gets me.

Ah yes, I'm fortunate to have academic affiliation - I think it was $34 or so w/ that, otherwise I would probably still be on quicktime.

Hey, I was curious myself... tried it with the iPad Air 2 using AudioShare and MultiTrackDaw. Didn't work for either, defaulted to built-in mic. I guess it does indeed need plugin power. Sooo... never mind. ;)

  • You might also wanna check out reco Multicam, an App for ios, which does multicam recording with up to 4 ios devices simultaneously (Jakob did a vlog about it some time ago). It saves your files locally, but also saves a Master of the whole on your main device (all over some kind of Wlan). Macs can also be incorporated, it works great.

I encourage you to take a look at that list I linked to. There has to be an inexpensive, practical way you can feed your iPad video stream into a screen recorder.

Would love to hear about what that is if anyone can confirm...

No. All pennies spent elsewhere to this point. Travel in hope etc.

Okay, that juan flew right over my head. I know you don't like to open your kimono, but it's difficult to make a recommendation without some particulars. ;)

  • I checked out a few @telecharge. The ones I saw were Windows only. Still, my biggest issue is with the voiceover. Quicktime seems to work fairly well for the iPad A/V.

@animal - Multicam sounds very cool, but I probably will hold off until I get a device with more storage.

  • @funjunkie27 Just so we're not overlooking the obvious, have you considered using Audiobus/Audiobus Remote (or some other connectifying method) to pipe in the audio from your iPhone into your production?

  • @telecharge - I'm considering the BossJock app, so I would be able to duck the audio around the voiceover, but I will play around with that idea. Also, a video that I'm considering doing isn't AB compatible, although most of the time that wouldn't be an issue.

You's in Georgia, boy. Best learn to connectify.

  • They filmed that just south of us!

  • Take a look at this post by @gmslayton from a video thread I started two days ago.

Thanks for sharing that. Open Broadcast looks pretty sweet, and @gmslayton did a good job.

  • Musta missed that. Looks promising! Thanks to @Axxx and @gmslayton!
