I have a nice AKG lav mic and XLR Phantom Power Adaptor, which works well, but was expensive-ish (I got it cheaper though). However, a year or so before, I bought five of these, for about five pounds, from Amazon. Yes, five - for a fiver!

And in fact, they're not shit. They're actually quite passable. They're plug-in power (which isn't phantom power - plug-in power is a few volts, between about 2Vdc to 5Vdc ish, depending on the device powering it - camcorders, etc, whereas Phantom Power is proper 48V floated onto the XLR balanced line (although quite often lower than 48Vdc, ie 18V is quite common, and most phantom power stuff will work just as well with that, and it's safer).
It's worth mentioning I've paid somewhat more than those five for a fiver for other (still comparatively cheap) lav mics that simply were terrible.
Yes, that's digislate. I forgot to set the date (or more probably, didn't care, as I was going to sync up same day anyway).
@telecharge Thanks for that. Making videos is a lot harder than I originally thought.
Thanks again @u0421793. For now,I'm going to cheap out though, as I'm seeing that using my iPhone4 for the voiceover works pretty well. I just uploaded this:
It seems to be a nice improvement over earlier attempts. Feedback on the production, or the app, is welcome.
Sounds good to me, Russ. I even gave you the proper respect of my TV w/ soundbar.
Thanks Charles! Wow! A soundbar even! Scary to think you put up with all my ums and ers in such fidelity!
Didn't bother me in the least, but, um, yeah, uh, you might want to consider a script.
Lol! These vids make me very aware that senior moments are real!
Sounds pretty good. Out of interest how far away were you from the phone's mic?
I had in in the desktop about 6" from my gut, so about 4'.... Probably about 18".
I forgot to add @JohnnyGoodyear - with you pulling out that Taylor, this might be a good app for you to consider.
Read my mind skipper....that and Music Memos will be on deck as soon as I get some new strings....
Yeah...I need to revisit Music Memos as well.
I bought a lav on ebay for $10 that just plugs into my iphone. I clip it near the 2nd button on my shirt, throw the phone in my pocket - portable! I also record using audioshare, which allows using Audio Unit fx (compressor). After recording, it's easy to send to the ipad via any of audioshare's many options. When recording, use a clapper (or hands) with video and audio rolling. Try never to stop recording - do multiple takes without stopping recording. Then in editing, sync the sound first, and it will stay in sync in subsequent edits, saving lots of time. The downside is that this method does use up more recording space on the phone. I was a post production guy in Hollywood for 20 years, lol!
See what you started, @funjunkie27?
Wow, @AlleycatLA. Thanks for the tips!
Thanks @AlleycatLA. This thread was enlightening in that I never considered that some lavs require ext power. Still, I'm at a good point now, since I'm happy with the quality with my iphone4 mic. I am using Audioshare, so I could add compression and/or EQ, if needed, but I didn't touch the voiceover with that last video, and it seemed useable as it was.
The multi takes without stopping makes sense, and since the video is recorded to my desktop, and I have plenty of space on the iphone4, I can take that approach.
Just doing my part
