It'd be good to hear the death of some tosser being announced for a change. Too many musicians and good people leaving this year, too many bastards still alive.

The problem with tossers is there's always another just around the corner. Not so with great artists. They are irreplaceable.

    Exactly.

This just in from an old, good friend from New York (who now lives in Nicaragua):

    Johnny,

Just read Leonard Cohen died, making this officially the worst week in history.

I have one good Leonard Cohen story.
Comes from an intern I worked with in publishing in NYC 15 years ago.
She (intern) and a female friend (both about 21 years old) loved Cohen and they were
visiting Montreal (or Quebec - I forget) and found out where Leonard Cohen lived.
They took a taxi to his place.
    He wasn't there.
They waited for a few hours.
    He eventually showed up.
They told him they loved his music.
He invited them in, cooked them dinner, they all hung out for a few hours, great time.
No hint of any creepy older-man moves on the young fans ... nothing.
    just a completely sweet guy.

    I've always loved that story.
And fully believe it as this intern was not a bullshitter.

  • @JohnnyGoodyear: Great story! The loss is felt harder when the geniuses are also authentically kind-hearted, generous people...

Not a great week here either. Started with our house buyers pulling out at the last minute, so we lose the sale, new house move and a couple of grand in between, and finished with me just picking up my son to find he'd smashed up a large chunk of his school and hit the Head with a chair today. Oh and a dangerous sociopath was put in charge of most of the nuclear weapons on the planet halfway through.

As weeks go, this wasn't the best.

Holy shit. Ativan for all and right now. Sorry to hear about your troubles. Far more concerned about 1. The son. 2. The house, than the end of the world. Funny how the personal trumps all else. Seriously dude, try and take the longer view. I know that's horribly impossible, but it's all there is. And in the meantime get through the weekend as best as you're able.

  • 'We are ugly but we have the music' RIP

  • Spent the evening with my 17-year-old who is a better guitarist than I am. His musical taste is very eclectic, but he surprisingly aligns with pretty much everything I like. And he has very forward-thinking tastes. (He's deep into Ali Farka Toure and the new Orb record! How did that happen?)

And yet he had never heard Leonard Cohen before last night. So after a dozen plays of "Suzanne" and even more of "Hey, That's No Way to Say Goodbye" — including a moment when he pulled out the guitar (mine) and capo'd up to figure it out (Oh, that F# minor!) — I felt a huge weight lift after the election of an autocratic, nativist bigot. Music is bigger than politics.

  • thanks for that story about your son, @ExAsperis99. It made me smile bigger than I have all week (I'm sharing music with my 17-year-old, too; what a gift!). Kudos to L. Cohen for bringing a little light to dark places.

  • Pure essence. He'd get away with anything with that voice. He didn't need to. Take care LC

And @MonzoPro : your son sounds a lot like my middle child, if I'm reading correctly. No Leonard Cohen communion with him, but we do have Kendrick Lamar. Have to keep the communication open. And remember, just about everyone you admire has a story about smashing up the school and throwing a chair at somebody.

Thanks....probably not when they've just turned 8 though! All a bit loopy at the moment. Trying to get him to divert his energies into music, though his big thing is art and writing. Perhaps I'll play him some Leonard Cohen tomorrow.

8? No problem. You're worried about what the "crime" might predict. It only gets scary when they're 14.
Good luck with the Leonard Cohen, but he sounds like more of a Kendrick Lamar guy!

His adult height has been predicted as 6' 8" (he's already twice the size of his peers), and I'm an old dad, so I'm going to play him lots of soothing, mellow, ambient music...and keep him well away from my Motörhead albums...

  • Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
    That's how it goes
    Everybody knows

    RIP Leanord Cohen

  • He wrote some of my favorite songs. May his soul rest in peace. I made this little instrumental song today as a tribute to his work and his life. Enjoy!

You know that some-tossers-I-mean-people get their deaths announced all the time, right? There's a whole entire newspaper section devoted exclusively to announcing random-tossers-I-mean-people's deaths, it has its own name and everything! It's called "The Obituaries".

I'm guessing that the "some random tosser" and the "you not noticing" features mght in some way be connected amirite?

My apologies, I was trying to lighten the tone but it obviously belonged right where it was, I'm sorry.

Maybe channel that rebellion into rock music? Kind of hit them with his rhythm stick, instead of his fists... or a chair.

What, Hillary Clinton got in after all? ;)

But seriously, the Donald is probably less dangerous for being an outsider, and no one is going to let him do anything too risky. He's already backtracking on some of his major pledges.

That was the main reason I didn't like the Nobel thing; seemed to be tempting this (simple twist of) fate
