  • @benkamen When you tap on "X" to delete notes in the settings section, it deletes them, but they still show up in the pattern selector on the right hand side of the screen. Not a big deal in the end, just thought you might want to know about it.

  • What a delightful app. I bought it mostly as a show of O.N.C. support and have been instead delighted and inspired by the output.

Would love to be able to set the third track as another melody track. Definitely dig the drums as it almost gauruntees interesting rhythms but as often as not I find myself syncing it to a "regular" drum machine app. At that point, I'd love to employ track 3 as another melody source.

Would also find additional joy in setting a clock divider/doubler per track.

  • Would love to know if anybody has a hack to play the patterns in "song mode," or whatever you'd want to call it. Or I suppose you could sequence these in Modstep if dM had midi learn....

  • Updated..

  • Gotta love that shiny new icon! ;)

  • Dot Melody as long been an underrated app, with much potential. Good to see the devs have not abandoned it, but wish they would believe in it even more.

....and add .wav export to Patterning.

Agreed on both. Dot Melody is deeper than it may seem, if you have the patience for writing melodies the way it does.

And I don’t understand why Patterning doesn’t get continuous love (from the developer that is), especially during its first couple of years when it was selling like mad. It does so many things right, but has the potential to do just as many more good things. Doubt at this point they’ll ever happen, though.

  • I had trouble getting the MIDI out to work from the drum track... eventually got it working with iSpark, Soft Drummer & Funk Drummer, but no luck with funkbox, modrum, seekbeats, DM1, DM2, Drumjam, or Ruismaker. The lead and bass midi out seem to work more easily. Anyone have any ideas why?

  • And just tried it in Gadget. Again, all the gadgets pick up the midi from dot melody fine except the drums. I tried it with various input & channel combos, no result. And then I went back to Soft Drummer/Funk Drummer and it doesn't work with those any more either... :-(
What am I doing wrong? (I'm doing the same thing in both source and target apps for MIDI settings, can't fathom why the drums alone won't work.)

Gonna guess it's the notes it's sending
Try transposing to see if you get anything sounding (with Midiflow Transpose or if you recorded the midi out, move the notes around in the piano roll of your DAW)

  • @tim. Yeah @senhorlampada is correct. Dot melody sends the drums to midi in a non-standard way. Most drum machines have the drums mapped in one of two ways. One uses chromatic notes, the other uses traditional midi drum mapping. The first way maps sequentially using all the keys, the other maps specific drum sounds to specific keys according to a standardized method. Dot melody does not use either method, it maps to the C major scale. Also most drum mapping starts on note C3, but dot melody starts on C4.
I have never been able to get more than 5 drums to play using the chromatic mapping method, since dot melody doesn’t output sharps/flats for drums. The standard midi drum mapping works, but it doesn’t play the drum sounds I want. You also have to transpose the output from dot melody down an octave to get it to work as well.
I suggest you use something else for drums, like Patterning, their drum app. You can use the drum channel in dot melody to play melodies in C major/A minor that are not tied to chord changes if you find that useful in your compositions. I use it to play a static melody while the lead and bass change with the chords, but hardly use it for drums.

Not to be overly sensitive to/defensive about this comment and to risk being uncouth, but I think it's worth noting that Patterning has had several significant updates since it was released in 2015. When Patterning launched it didn't have MIDI learn, Cloud Kits, Link, Ableton Live Set Export, Audio Export, MIDI CC Outs, Multi-channel IAA/AB outputs, IAA clock sync, MIDI Clock sync/send, iPad Pro support, Dropbox integration, Sample preview, sample cropping, lots of the song editing features, etc. etc. Some of these updates took 3-6 months or more to get out the door. So I think it's a bit unfair to say it hasn't been getting love! And I can assure you that Patterning is not being left for dead.

    (Sorry for the rant!)

@Zen210507 Patterning has .aiff export... are you really needing .wav specifically? I'd be surprised if any app that can read a .wav can't read an .aiff.

    Fair point, in most cases.

  • @benkamen Cloud Kits was a stroke of genius. I am forever grateful for that update.

Any chance you could get together with @brambos so that Bram could add a Patterning key map template to Rozeta X0X and Rhythm modules? Having the option to use Patterning's fantastic sequencer AND the option to switch to being driven by Rozeta's sequencers would make me giggly with joy

@benkamen Oddly, I think Cubasis still doesn’t support .aiff. Though I’d happily nag steinberg for that instead of bugging you for wav support—too many other cool possibilities for patterning. Thanks for the dot melody update and all yr cool apps!

  • I like the smaller dots much better. :)

It wasn’t meant to be an insult, though I could’ve used better wording. I apologize.

It was more of greedily wanting more of a good thing; which is something that annoys me when other posters do, so I committed my own pet peeve.

Rest assured Patterning is still easily in my top 3 apps. It’s fun, gets heavy use, and is aesthetically pleasing...rare combo there.

  • nobody ever says 'too much of a bad thing', it's only the good things that we don't want more of lol, well I want allot more of the patterning goodness so I don't think there is anything wrong with your sentiments personally, it's not even being greedy it's being honest and if you're like most of the folks around these parts you appreciate the good devs and are willing to pay what it's worth for the improvements.. I know I am!

  • Just purchased this app.
How does one get the IAP midi out?
The star button is supposed to open the app store - but never works?

@CracklePot, @senhorlampada, thanks very much! I'll check this out when I get home - although I'll probably end up just not using dM for drums, as you suggest.

Most of the time I end up using dM for random percussions which would end up layered with drum especific apps, like Patterning, Ruismaker, Funkbox, etc.

Me too. Just drive one drum sound, or maybe a hi/low perc duo. Main drums produced from another drum app at the same time.

It's free, so no need to purchase.

  • Thanks - I read somewhere I needed to purchase an IPA to get it going...
Off to play I go :)
