AUFX:Dub coming up!

image

The next app in the AUFX series will be AUFX:Dub, a highly tweakable stereo delay audio effect, suitable for everything from clean digital delays to filthy dub echoes and broken cassette tapes. It features tape simulation (noise and warble), filters in the delay loop for typical dub sound, stereo detune, ping-pong delay, and more.

  • Bring it on :-) !!!

  • i don't like the interface (looks a bit cheap,sorry ;-) but i do like the sound!

  • @Crabman: Well, I do like clean and flat interfaces instead of ones that try to look like physical gear with lots of shine and shadows. But it's interesting to hear your opinions.

  • Fantastic, amazing, super fine and super super cool...I really love Space and will do a video very soon...but dub delays are my real love..I like Echo Pad but personally find it awkward to use..but this looks great and the interface is just perfect..it's all there, one screen, so great for doing your own thing while recording..Cant wait for this...put me on the team..please..please..please...do I need to beg..

  • Really awesome, looking forward to smashing the buy button on this :)

About the interface, I really like how it is now. It's simple, clean and uncluttered and lets you start tweaking multiple parameter around without any fuss at all. I guess I can understand people wanting flashy eye candy, everyone loves eye candy and blinking lights, but with these AUFX apps I'd rather take functionality and performance over a "over designed" eye candy interface. And it doesn't look cheap to me, I really love the clean blue/black interface on AUFX: Space.

I like Echo Pad but also find it a bit awkward. AUFX:Dub fits my way of working much more. I've always been bothered by the lack of stereo delay in BeatMaker 2, so I'll be buying Dub as soon as it's released.

You make wonderful apps, Jonatan. Audioshare has made my life easier, Bitwiz is fun as hell, and AUFX:Space is something I've wanted for around 2 years! I use Yellofier quite frequently as well for background rhythms.

Can't wait to see what the next AUFX app is!

Edit: I should also say, I really like your UIs. Nice and simple and right to the point. Also the dark color schemes are very helpful for us with darkened studio lighting!

  • This sounds really great !
re the interface : clean and simple is good but the color combinations can be easier to look ...maybe pastel and fruity colors considering the dub ;-)
Anyway , I think there is more space to have bigger and larger sliders in there with a pastel background and bright sliders.....have to squint now in low light den settings!!
    Can't wait for it!!!!,

  • +1 for clean interface, function and form.Only thing I have against similar colours being used is that you need near full screen brightness when in daylight and this eats into battery life.

AUFX is nowhere near as bad as BM2 (a real pain to see controls if outside,as buttons are a similar tone to the background)

Djay2 lets your switch background colour scheme for use in a club/dark room.

Really like echo pad and kind of feel for a dev when competition comes along.

But we are crying out for quality effects and lots of them.

  • edited August 2013

Yes! The competition is heating up... looks like this is a more "tweakable parameters" delay effect, compared to the more "jump right in" approach of EchoPad (which I love). I consider this a healthy thing...

    Can't wait to try AUFX:DUB!

  • Perfect app , love the clean interface .

  • @J_Liljedal: i totally agree with you.I'm not a fan of all this skeuomorphism and i really like the look (and functionality of course)from audioshare! But in this case (same for the reverb) you are wasting a lot of space on both sides and i don't like that all faders look the same if you know what i mean.Looks...unprofessional all in all.And that has nothing to do with fancy shadows or similar.Of course, this is just my opinion and it's more important how it SOUND.And in this case it seems nobody can go wrong with this one or the Reverb.AND,if something is straight with faders (the best method to control something on a touch surface)i would definitely prefer vertical fader not horizontal.

  • have to disagree, doesn' t look "unprofessional" at all to me.

  • Take my money ;) Now i just need also at least 3 slots for the audiobus effects.
However, this looks fine and since i used AUFX:Space i'm looking forward for the other FX's. Only thing i would love is a option to use it also in landscape (iPhone user).

  • @smeeth:guess there's no need to disagree cause i didn't asked for agreement ;-) i made it very clear that this is just my personal opinion.Everybody can have (and share of course)his own opinion.

  • I think I got a wee chub at the end. Sounds amazing! Can not wait. Bless you for invert on the feedback! I reckon this is the perfect compliment to Echo Pad. Echo Pad encourages playing while this appears to encourage setting. Not that you can't do either with both but they each have their leanings (to me).

I too am a fan of the clean UI. Looks anything but unprofessional to me. All the knobs are identical on this $2400 Chandler single channel pre but no one would kick out of their studio for eating crackers. ;) http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/LTD1/

If I had one UI request it would be to use the space next to or above the meters to display the parameter currently being touched with a slightly larger value read out to aid the touch-screen-hand-in-the-way syndrome when trying to see values being set. Nanostudio does this up top in the info bar and it's really handy.

  • First of all, I'm really happy to hear you like my apps, big thanks!

Regarding competition, I really think Echo Pad is great too, and I think both apps have their place. As you say, Echo Pad is more oriented towards playing (with xy-pad and all) while AUFX:Dub is more for precise tweaking. They also have some different features.
My plan is to fill a broad range of effects with AUFX, I want it to be a complete collection, even if there sometimes already exists similar effect apps.

A lot of interesting feedback and ideas regarding the UI, and I'm glad to hear it's not only myself who like the design ;) I will consider all ideas, brighter colors, current parameter display, iphone landscape, etc. When I made the UI, I tried to make it so there is almost a 1:1 correspondence between ipad and iphone. The reason the sliders are not wider are part esthetically, but also because I want to have room for 3 columns in some coming AUFX app. I like the apps to have identical design (to focus on the content, the actual effect), but maybe it would make sense to let the sliders be a bit wider on ipad when there's only one or two columns of params. I'll think about it!

Regarding the colors, I actually considered having each AUFX app in individual color themes (blue reverb, orange delay, green somethingnext, etc) but abandoned the idea since I just couldn't find enough colors that looked good. :)

  • I'm curious about how all this will work with the inter-app audio still. I know there are NDAs in place, so devs can't talk about it, but can we get an idea on the timeline when details can be provided....or is that the case all the way until the release? I'm guessing the latter, based on Apple's penchant for secrecy.

  • Regarding iOS7 and inter-app audio, this is their own public information from https://developer.apple.com/ios7/

    Inter-App Audio

Now your apps can make beautiful music together. With Inter-App Audio, apps can
register their audio streams to share with other apps. For example, a series of apps
could publish audio streams of instrument tracks while another uses the combination
of these streams to compose a song. Inter-App Audio also provides for MIDI control
of audio rendering, remotely launching other registered Inter-App Audio apps and more.

I think it says quite much already. You'll need to use your imagination to fill in the rest ;)

  • I don't know if i understand the full package now but it sounds simply amazing :) A dream comes true if (IF) everything is working well together

  • Do the apps work in landscape mode as well as portrait mode? If not, that is a big feature request for me. It throws everything off for me when I have to tilt the tablet just for one app, and then tilt everything back to continue my work...

  • Thanks for that @ j_liljedahl. I hadn't see that yet. Coupled with AudioBus, MidiBridge, and all the amazing music apps out there, it should get really fun!

  • edited August 2013

"use your imagination to fill in the rest ;)"

My imagination is telling me iOS 7 will have built in effects chain ability... But maybe it's running wild?

  • @j_liljedahl Looks great and I'm sure it will sound awesome like all your apps. :)

As far as competition, I couldn't be in better company! I'm a fan of Jonatans apps and he's a great guy, would love to even maybe collaborate on something one day. I think both Echo Pad and AUFX:Dub have their place and seeing as they're both priced very fairly, everyone should buy both. :)

Their features and approach are quite different and I think they will compliment each other well.
I'm a delay fiend personally so I can never get enough different favors of echo units. I used to collect basically any delay pedal I could find, and to be able to get the kind of quality from these apps for less than $5 with the amount of depth they have is ridiculously cool. I used to regret selling all those pedals a few years ago but I barely miss em' now.

  • @HoldernessMedia I totally agree! We need all the delays we can get :)

Yes, delay is a favorite of mine too. My first delay unit was a Ibanez DM1100, which I got when I was around 12 years old. I still have it and it's still working fine! I also had a Melos Disk-Echo (http://www.estecho.com/gear/Univox_EM-200.php) which I regrettably sold very cheap because I didn't understand the value of it. I had even modified it with a switch to turn off the erase and record heads so that I could make loops with it :)

  • edited August 2013

@j_liljedahl Ahhh man, too bad about the Melos, that thing looks cool. I never know why I end up selling some of these things not realizing what I had, haha. I did that with a Roland MKS-7 Super Quarter years ago, real dense move selling that cheap.

I had a DM1100 for awhile too, great tone and modulation on those. Here's a few favorites that I wish I had kept, I'll buy them again someday I'm sure.

    • Boss PS-3 Pitch Shifter/Delay

    http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f36/schizophrenia-pedal-form-boss-ps-3-digital-pitch-shifter-delay-review-423085/
This was my first effect pedal ever, good god I loved this thing. One of the most versatile delay pedals I ever had, it seems like you can never run out of new sounds with it.

    • Korg PME-40x

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vBQfiPbwLM&feature=youtu.be&t=1m26s

I had one of these units with the analog delay, phaser, and chorus modules. The analog delay module in particular I loved, really dark and could do insane self-oscillation. No clue why I sold this, probably to fund the purchase of some other new gear that ended up not being as cool.

    • DOD Delay 585 Performer

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gvl2zjfwXVQ&feature=youtu.be&t=3m37s

Just all around good tone and feedback with this one.

Now I'm all nostalgic for delay pedals, I should avoid eBay right now haha. I've got a good friend just up the road who was smart enough to keep all his gear and has some of my old pedals as well, so I get to jam around with them sometimes.

  • @j_liljedahl oh, heartbreak. If it somehow makes you feel any better, I once traded a fender silver face amp for a box of b-movie Betamax tapes so I could get samples. Had finally saved for my Roland s-760 and needed inputs. It was a dumb guitar amp and I played keyboards! #Facepalm.

And yeah, delays über alles. Its out of control. I have a Roland space echo, Effectron II, that green digitech pedal, AKAI Headrush, Aria DEX-1000 (amazing http://infradead.shiftwave.org/delays-the-joy-of-hearing-it-again/) and a Digitech RDS 3.6. And echo pad!

  • I think you guys need a 12 Step Program, stat! :D I've never had any hardware because I've always looked at the prices and gone aaaarrgghh, particularly because I never knew exactly what I'd do with them. But since my iPad and Audiobus, I have spent hours and hours just playing around with a simple loop using Echo Pad and Turnado and other FX apps (now AUFX:Space, too!), just seeing what kind of off the wall craziness can be achieved.

There's a simple joy to playing around with sound, isn't there? Who cares if something actually comes out fully formed at the other end!

  • Well said Michael.

  • @Michael_R_Grant - My hardware delay addiction is under control now, but I do fall off the wagon every now and then. Software delays are another story, so much sonic potential with a tiny fraction of the financial side effects makes the addiction more socially acceptable and doesn't destroy any families.

I absolutely agree with you about how much fun it is playing with sound, that's why I got into this in the first place. :)
