Looks/sounds interesting. From watching the videos on their site, I'm not sure I get what exactly is going on within each grid. Sounds like they're all the same note. Is that true?
Also, is it really on 'Wifi MIDI'? I'm assuming that means no virtual MIDI but will it recognize hardware MIDI ports.
Ah, I get it. From the tutorial video, "Connected dots share the same note".
Manual here: http://www.gridcomposer.net/manual.php. Also explains that connected dots = more volume for that note, which makes sense.
Looks like MIDI is indeed WIFI only. I love novel sequencers like this. I'd be more interested if it could use virtual MIDI or see hardware ports. And if it could take MIDI input to adjust the current key.

My heart sinks when I see apps like this, merrily going their own way with apparently no interest in the connectivity that would greatly stimulate interest...and sales.
The Dev wrote back to me:
first you are totaly right with the lacking connectivity, i see this too![:/ :/](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/confused.png)
So my background is more in design/graphics/art than in audio technology, and this app is also my first try creating something in this direction. I used the c++ kits openFrameworks and tonicAudio for this app. Sadly its not really easy to get this stuff running with tonicAudio (the whole framework has a focus on multi platform development). To be honest, the build-in synths are also just ok but not great, though I have a good time using it to control some desktop daws.
I bought this last week as far as I can tell it only sends midi to hardware and VSTI/AU works great for that.
Over WiFi ?
>
Good that he recognises this, too. If an update can be bade available, interest will increase.
No Ableton LINK no buy
Yes over wifi was the only way I tried. To be honest I have ton of other apps can do the exact same thing app I would have rather sent the money to Doug Woods had I know his situation so I'll do that now instead of purchasing another redundant app this week.
the design of the app looks pretty slick though.
Nice design, shame connectivity is unlikely as I'd have given this a go.
And a unique take on sequencing, which is welcomed.
I've pointed him in the direction of Jonatan Liljedahl's notes on IAA-MIDI, hopefully the framework he's chosen for the app won't be a limiting factor to implementation of connectivity/ synchronicity.
this is such a brilliant app. the only thing that severely hurts it is that midi out is over wifi only.
if the only updates it gets are midi clock sync and midi out via virtual midi ports it would teleport the
app from a toy i like to play with to something i will use a lot more regular..... And if it gets Ableton link
after those 2 updates it would graduate to must use app in live jams.
Hey there, I'm the dev of GridComposer.
First thx for the interest and the nice feedback. Its good to see some people actually having fun with the app.
Well, regarding the connectivity issue, I expected some negative feedback on this, especially considering what place this is
, but srsly, it was not possible for me to implement this stuff without delaying the development for an unknown amount of time. I thought, a bit naive maybe, a pro user should be able to route audio/midi via wifi/interface/cable and take it from there, yeah not best practice, I know so dont be to harsh on me
, also I'm not a big iOS musician myself. And I saw it really more as a toy than a serious application.
But, dont take me wrong, I'm really looking into this and searching for a way to get this stuff working, first midi, iia and/or audiobus and after that maybe link. I can already connect to other apps via midi while running the app in foreground, but without getting to technical here, I still need to find a working solution for having the app run in background mode, getting there, the rest should be hopefully easy. I'll keep you updated on the progress.
Other than that, all kinds of feedback is always welcome.
Thanks for coming on here and providing that update.
The app looks very interesting, with a lot of potential.
I'll be watching developments with interest.
There is also an older beta version OSX binary. It might be a good idea to share it here, if someone wants to get a hands on impression. Its a few months old, so it will look and sound a bit different, but the functionality is (90%) the same, including outgoing midi.
So give it a try if you like... but keep in mind, its not a release build.

Great to have you here @gwio. Congrats on the app and thanks for the context.
It's not so much that iOS nerds around here can't do that; it's that many don't want to. "I don't use my computer for music" is a common refrain around these parts.![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
If you decide to go ahead with some of the connectivity stuff, there's a developer only forum at https://developer.audiob.us/.
I'll definitely be keeping my eye on the app! Please post news about any updates.
@gwio Kudos to the design element of the app. Graphically, it's appealing and it reminds me of some kind of game. If you can integrate some type of puzzle element into it like match-the-tracks type of thing.. wow, that would be cool as hell. I hope that doesn't sidetrack you.
As a toy, it's ok. I got my $1.99 worth, but it could be so much more just by adding better midi connectivity. Of course more is better, but at least that's a good start for people that want to use this as the base for their composition.. and if you add in automation and a randomizer, even better!
Yah thx, the design and concept is really a bit undefined. This started from an older project, a touch table installation with just one big grid.
This was build with Processing (Creative Java Framework) and I just wanted to archive it and port it to something I could run without the table stuff. So I started to rebuild this in openFrameworks (a c++ framework, I believe the Nodebeat app is using it too, just with a different audio framework). And during this process it changed into a mobile app. But the gridsize and amount was really due to performance, I used an older iPad2,4s at that time. I have some interesting screen of different versions.
there are some more dev screens in this album
In the end, it was too chaotic with that many elements, but fun
. Hm the game stuff, yeah, I had this discussion too, but I really have no idea what and how to pull it off...
A randomizer is actually there, its a leftover, press 'r' it works in the OSX binary, but I might implement it later. The connectivity is the real priority right now.
Glad you stopped by.
If you get all the connectivity happening, you double the usefulness ... I see no reason you can't raise the price to reflect that.
Welcome to the forum @gwio
I'll be blunt. Audiobus implementation isn't really a priority in this case since as you mentioned the synth sounds
are not really that great. just focus on iAA Midi and Link and you'd make a ton of us extremely happy
i'd personally use it to drive other synth apps and link would solve the clock sync issues.
I'd second that
I thought, a bit naive maybe, a pro user should be able to route audio/midi via wifi/interface/cable and take it from there, yeah not best practice, I know so dont be to harsh on
Implying that it's the fault of prospective customers, not being pro enough, will not win friends. Many developers here are one man bands, and yet do manage essential connectivity. Maybe not all at once, but the will is there.
I'd third it - unless the built-in synth is really good, a sequencer needs MIDI out to drive other synth apps. These will probably already have AB/IAA connectivity, so you can add that later if you wish.
Nice looking app, hope the MIDI connectivity is possible on the framework you're using.
As a musician, and not a particularly bright one, your app looks a lot harder to me than just playing something familiar.![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
I scanned the manual, but haven’t had a chance yet to check your app out. I wonder if there’s a market for it where people just like something to play around with. When I read “no musical knowledge is needed to start playing,” I tend to think it’s aimed at non-musicians. OTOH, musicians for thousands of years have been drawn to picking something up to see what noise they can make with it. Does everyone these days need everything to be “connectable?” How sad.
I can’t tell yet what the app does exactly, but is it possible it could generate MIDI files? Musicians could then create sequences and use them in other apps without having to mess with networking.
Yes this is my thought too, there is no need to reinvent the wheel, there are already so many good synths out there.
Please don't get hung up on the "pro" word. I'm sure people who are using all those apps daily, are able to get the connection they want, if they think its worth the setup. The current wifi output is not the best, but better than none. Besides that, I never advertised full connectivity.
I agree, the build-ins are ok to play around, but the real fun comes with other synths. I spend like 90% of the time with debugging, and had not much time to get creative with it. But I made one small sample with it which liked, driving some synth pads.
The "musical knowledge" is mostly related to the scale thing. A user without musical knowledge can start placing blocks, and will get a more or less good sounding harmony. He does not need to think about assigning notes and stuff.
At the moment, the only way is to connect with a DAW and record the midi there.
Sounds good to me! Hope you can sort it, most of us on here would be happy to pay for an IAP for MIDI connectivity (Auxy did this) so it could appeal to both markets.
+1
Hey, dev here...
I'm really happy to announce a coming update that adds InterAppAudio, Audiobus and better Midi support. After a few fruitless attempts in the last months, it's finally working![:# :#](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/grimace.png)
IAA works really stable, not one freeze or drop during my testing (with Garageband). Midi(out) works also well, tested it with a few synth apps. AB3 connectivity is a bit wonky at the moment, but remains stable once a connection is running.
I think the extended midi support is the most useful addition, it's fun to drive some nice synths.
So, having only my iphone and a limited amount of apps. It would be great if some volunteers would give the beta a try. There are so many apps and use cases, might well be I'm missing something. Just waiting for the review process to be finished. So please drop me a mail where I can send the Testflight invite if you are interested.
Also, I see how Link or Midi Clock Sync would be useful. I will look into this once the update is stable and running![;) ;)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
