on 9.3.5 and will probably stay there, as I feel & have read, that the farther you get from the iOS version the iDevice shipped with the poorer the device will run. My iPad's running well and I just don't want to go to 10 unless absolutely necessary (say Auria, my DAW, goes iOS 10 & up only.)

I don't think that 'rule' applies to the Air 2. iOS 10 is in many ways much more efficient with resources than 9, and since the Air 2 is still the current iPad its performance may actually improve by updating. Don't take my word for it, just wanted to share my observations.

Mmmm...Really? Man do you have an Air 2? Has it been smoother than 9? I figure as a dev you know a shit ton more re: iOS than I.

I'll say, I am interested. I feel like when going from 8 to 9, I can research & second guess it or just pull the trigger & press update.

Derek aka @MusicInclusive helped with tons of info re: 8 to 9. I gotta hear his opinion now on going to 10.

Thanks Bram, love your apps brother.

Yeah no major problems with iOS10 here barring a few minor apps that have not been updated since 2014!

You and at @ElGregoLoco are making me seriously consider going to iOS 10' because if it is performing the same or better than 9, then it will future proof my Air 2 a bit longer.

I am looking through all my favs on the App Store and it seems most are iOS10 ready...thinking about it.

  • Air 2 is the best money/power option available in this size at this time.

I'm currently running about 230 music apps on my Air2 latest iOS. I'm a dabbler, so I use lots of different apps every day. By no means have I been doing in depth testing, but so far I've not found any more or any less issues than I had on iOS 9. I had lots more on iOS 8 :p

Got to say most the major issues I've encountered, devs have now sorted. Most the ones remaining are old apps that are well over due for updates. As always, do more research for any apps that are essential to your use :)

I have 10 running on an Air2, Mini4, iPhone 5S and a Touch 6G. I wouldn't hesitate installing it on any of these devices again, very smooth sailing.

Mind you, it's not worth it for the new features, unless you're interested in stickers in your messenger. But -as you say- for futureproofing, solid 64 bit support (and even a slightly improved batterylife on my 5S) it's worth the update. iOS 10 seems a bit more optimized on the inside than 9 was.

  • Updated yesterday my Air1 to iOS 10.1 from 9.3 and strangely it runs much better with large AB sessions :)

  • I have 2 x air 2, one running 8.4 and other 10.1. I can see no performance difference other than 8.4 not being able to run a few key apps.

    Stickers are awesome...

  • I pulled the trigger on updating from 9.3.5 to 10.1.1 and after half a day messing around everything seems cool. Yes, stickers are always cool @anickt but I pretty much use my iPad 85% for music production/writing. I'll look online sometimes but usually do that on my phone, most everything else I do with my iPad is music related.

It seems to be working smoothly and all apps I've tried so far have fired up & worked nicely. Auria is the center piece of my home studio and it was my main concern but it's
    smooth & working free.

Thanks again for the help and personal experiences, I appreciate it bigtime...

  • @brambos I updated to 10.1.1 and everything is cool except for this annoying screen orientation bug. It will intermittently ger stuck in portrait or landscape and the only way to change it is to reboot.

The reboot cures it awhile but it comes back sooner or later. Have you experienced this? The iMore forums and other iOS information sources online have tons of people reporting it. It happens to a lot of different iDevices with iOS 10 and above but iPad Air 2's really seem to be plagued with it....

Little bugs like this are why I'm always so gunshy about updates. If it's a small bug, especially with a work around, no matter how annoying, Apple iOS devs hold off new updates until there's many features updated or they just hold off until the next big numeral update...lame.

  • Can't say I've noticed that, but my Air 2 is docked in landscape 99% of the time. But if the Mini 4 is also affected then I certainly haven't noticed any issue with screen orientation at all.

Until I find a work around (I found a few on some forums but most are more convoluted than just rebooting) or Apple updates with a bug fix I'm probably going to stay in landscape since my most used apps like Auria, my guitar apps, DrumPerfect, etc. are landscape.

Well, if its the worse that happened it's not the end of the world. Its why I am so wary of updating...but everything else seems to be fine.

  • I've deleted all non landscape apps.

  • I'm pretty much in landscape 100% of the time so i rotation locked my Air2.
Haven't really seen the bug on my end.

  • The iOS 'screen rotate bug' is quite annoying yes, hope it gets fixed in iOS10.2...
Temporary solution for me is to close the magnetic cover/lid wait for 5-10 seconds and open it in the orientation it is intended to be used in, works 9/10 times.

  • im still using a ipad 2...im happy ..i use it with my daw ....with the behringer is202
