Precisely. And maybe one day.....
Oh wow, what an amazing update. The filters and reverb on this thing really don't sound like any other device, so being able to use them in au is a really big deal. Now if only Audulus would get au embedding...
For people who have this I really recommend downloading the original manual, and tutorials. The key to this thing is feedback. You can get some really amazing sounds by feeding things back from the Meter bus (or feeding in external audio and using that to do FM, or AM).
Somebody asked about CPU usage. I used to run it fine on my iPad 3.
zMors Modular functions as an AU Host for AU Instruments and AU Effects. While you wait for Audulus to support AUs, you could pull iVCS3 AU Modules into zMors Modular for bit of a EuroRack Modular.
I have to watch more of your videos. It's once again excellent.

Is there an included preset which demonstrates this technique?
What do you mean feedback, or audio for fm/am?
In the EMS Bank there is scoope Feedback 2
Play with the input levels to see what's going on ...
Just type feedback into the searchbar - the looking glass above the preset menu
Fm/am stuff with audio is in the in out fx bank and the sampler bank ...
(The inputs are row 8 & 9 in the matrix)
I loaded "Scope Feedback 2" from the EMS folder and messed around with the pin matrix and knobs for about five minutes and now I have this slow-rolling seascape which has been playing on my headphones for more than 10 minutes now without interference by me.
This thing is God.
It's using up to 35 % of CPU on my Mini 2; in AUM, opened as IAA instrument with the sequencer running and the LFO automation turned on. I also tested the app in two AU slots on the same channel with Patterning running thru them and CPU usage peaked at 22 %. I guess it's pretty modest if we think of how big and complex this synth is.
Is the James Cosby set worth the purchase? I have all the others.
Cool, thanks
My music style these days has found this app quickly becoming a staple with Animoog on most projects.
I generally manually modulate the 3 freq. and several other parameters. I often shadow vocals or harmony with this app. Albeit lofi and spacey. It is like a natural reverb dispersing the harder edges.
I bought it because of the AUv3 update, (to support AUv3) and i´m pretty pissed.
At myself of course, for not buying this earlier! Holy crap what a legendary synth, for some stupid reason i didn´t expect it to be that good. This is on par at least with the Model 15, i like the sound even better. A monophonic monster the oscillators and filter sound just so beautiful, and the AUv3 modular possibilities are just ridiculous. It´s a glimpse of a golden iOS future.
There needs to be a desktop version. The CPU hit doesn't make it practical in a mix. The iSEM au crashed MTS with 3 tracks in a mix taking forever to load. Maybe au's work better on an ipad pro...
iSem takes forever to load and is very heavy on the CPU. But that has very little to do with the AU format. In fact, AU as a protocol has the potential to be a lot more frugal with the system's resources than standalone apps where each app has its own sandbox.
I made a track with 12 Phasemaker instances and a Ruismaker in Cubasis on my iPad Mini 4 recently. And it was nowhere near hitting the CPU ceiling.
It's all about coding with multiple instances in mind, instead of just doing a standalone app.
Love the update to AU on iVCS3's modules. I just had to load up an envelope filter and an organ for some "Won't Get Fooled Again" style messing round.
I have one question: I'm not a MIDI expert by far but use it & have more & more since the MIDI overhaul to Auria Pro. Any way I recorded some of the organ through iVCS3 envelope on a MIDI track using the Auria Lyra organ played with the floating keys and the envelopes an AU effect. It recorded the MIDI notes fine, played back fine but when I tried to do a Bounce in Place to get an audio file of it the "Bounce in Place" was not selectable (in faded grey).
I've used the feature several times with no problems on other MIDI stuff, with similar set up of Lyra instrument and an AU or AudioBus effect. Did I mess something up, forget something or since this is a new AU is this a bug?
Any insight is appreciated...
Thanks for the info. Your apps are great, though I haven't pushed them that far yet. It seems like iVCS3 is in a similar bag to iSem though it might improve over time.
I must admit I haven't tried iVCS3 yet, but I guess that if it is heavy on the CPU it is because of its high quality DSP algorithms and not because it is AU. A 6x oversampled filter is going to be eating CPU cycles like popcorn, regardless of whether you put it in a standalone or an AU
In fact, I think that -from a developer point of view- working with the AU format constantly reminds you that your plugin is just one cog in a bigger machine full of other plugins and effects which helps push for better optimizations than if you're building a standalone, blissfully unaware of the rest of the system
I don't get it. I opened it as an AU in MTS and Auria and couldn't get a sound out of it. No presets either.
presets don't make much sense for single modules
Did you play some notes into the vco?
I couldn't get it to do anything. What's the trick?
iVCS3 modules as AU's are tricky since I believe unless it's a signal generator (OSC) it won't "make a sound" by itself. I used the envelope filter as a sample & hold thing for some Pete Townshend "Won't Get Fooled Again" style organ pulses.
Anything with sustain will get the treatment, tried it on a few pads & got a cool bed to a little jam. Anyway back to the question, I know it's a pain sometimes but taking 15 min to read the manual (if available) is totally worth it.
Whenever I get a new app I see if there is a manual online in PDF, etc & see if I can 'Open In...' with iBooks. That way I have like a catalog of manuals whenever I get stuck. If there's no version that I can get into iBooks I'll bookmark the site in a separate "iOS Apps Manual" or make a note of it if the manual is accessible in app only.
Sorry I can't offer more help brother, and I'm not being facetious about the manuals, lol (you know, "Read the manual dude"), it is not like that. It's just if you're like me, you probably have over 100 or 200 apps, it can be easy to draw a blank, etc. Plus you can discover some features that you didn't know the app had. The FabFilter apps I got during the current sale are perfect examples, there are so many cool, deep features to get into that I would've missed unless I read the manual or saw a tutorial video.
Best of luck...
Cheers. It sounds too much of a hassle, though. I'll stick to stand alone. If I can't use the preset packs I got it's a no go for me.
Can't find any documentation or tutorials regarding how to use or tame the VCO AU. I have nothing against to rtfm, but the in app docs, and the docs on the website contains nada about the AU. Anyone out there who can help?
ok so I'll guide you through GarageBand
Are you sure you understand how the app works?
Then you'll see the vco Au and a Keyboard
https://pl.vc/9r4pg
Press a key get a drone
You will need to ad the other parts as aufx, GarageBand doesn't support this.
Vco works just like in the IAA app
Double tab the knob choose icon on the right, la voila lfo for any nonsense ...
Thanks @lala
What I get is a VCO with a drone - a constant tone - pitch can be shifted with keyboard. But I can't stop it - apart from turning down the volumes. Same thing happened in AUM - tried to add the envelope module - to get some kind of gate. Not much luck either still constant tones, nut now gated. But I haven't figures out how to make it stop. Missing the matrix.
Oh well - will try some more ...
For AUM. In the ENV module you have OFF. You need this all the way around to manual. Then you can send midi CCs to the ATTACK button via AUMs midi control.
Thnaks a lot, guys - that was it. Now for some serious tweaking ...
Unfortunately the in app iVCS3 manual is not updated with any AU "possible setup" type things. The in app manual, which is a real scan from the original '70's manual, does give info on synthesis properties & characteristics.
Knowing the purpose of the modules and the basics of analog synthesis still make it a bit haphazard, but that's half the fun. Moog's Model 15 has really been great for trial & error experimenting and it has taught me in a round about way the basics but there's a whole new world with the VCS3 stuff...
Good luck
EMS envelopes are self looping if not in off position
See manual for details
It has a lot of other EMS strangeness too, the square is the wrong way round, as is the trapezoid generator, a lot of stuff is upside down ...
This is not your average synthesizer!
Really if you know your way around basic subtractive, am and fm synthesis already
Read the fucking manual!!!
EMS is different!
