Bias AMP with ToneStack for fx?

Hey guys! Just getting into using my wifes old iphone6 as a practice travel headphone amp. Mostly for in the truck on luinch breaks at work. Was curious about Bias Amp (I have both FX and AMP on my PC) and have just begun digging into it but have found that bias fx doesnt exist on iPhone.

Have seen lots on Jam Up and Tone Stack. Have heard jamup compared to bias fx and it doesnt sound as nice. Tone stack has the added feature of adding other apps like reverbs into the signal chain. that sounds awesome.

Has anyone used Bias AMP for the Amp and Tone Stack for fx? I am really curious about that as it seems the way i will go. I love the customizability of the amps in Bias Amp and the flexibility of Tone Stack. anyone using custom Impulse Responses with Tone Stack or Bias on ios?

  • I know it can be done, but on my ipad, I have never tried this combo. I don't really use the IAA insert into the chain in Bias FX or Tonestack. I love the way JamUp sounds, yes Bias FX is better, but you can use the amps from bias amp in JamUp, and this really helps the sound a lot.

JamUp works the best for metal to my ears, Tonestack has the best sounding FX. So ya, there ya go. :)

  • ok cool. thats my line of thinking is that i really enjoy actually tinkering with the amps in Bias Amp. If i can use those amps and then Jamup(the easiest way) or (tonestack) for the fx I might have the setup im looking for.

Im really wondering how the sound on iphone will compare to my little thr10 practice amp. love that little guy.

  • Dunno if tone stack can host external impulses, but there is this ( https://fiddlicator.wordpress.com/ ) free impulse host(and other things) that you can be loaded as iaa on bias fx(sadly its ipad only). You can also use it on fx slot on audio bus and run tone stack(if it has the ability to turn off speaker sim) on input slot.

  • yeah i was just reading your post and wondering if tonestack lets you turn off cab sim

  • Tonestack can host external ir.i use it this way.sounds great with good impulses.enjoy!

  • what impulses are you using flo?

  • A,mesa speaker ir.you can't find it anymore on the web.that's a shame.they were really good.redwirez.com has a free marshall pack.some among them sound really good too.

  • at one point back in time I've stopped updating Positive Grid apps (I have JamUp and 'classic' BIAS), which was a good decision accord from what I've read from fellow users.
Their sound has turned into a negative improvement, probably to by requests from metal-heads. The nice trad amp sounds obviously aren't anymore...
But in fact I've used Tonestack as a pure shell to host JamUp for the ampsim and stuff from Holderness or Apesoft in IAA fx-slots.

what do you mean by this?

  • I think what @Telefunky is saying is you can host any IAA within Tonestack as part of your FX chain. Like some of the FX in ToneStack, but prefer Bias Amp? No problem. Want to use some of those great other IAA FX you have out there? No problem. Just scroll down to the IAA Effects section at the bottom of the FX list in ToneStack, then choose the FX you want. Mix and match as you please. B)

  • Hi Flo!
I really like the guitar tones you've been getting, and was wondering what your signal chain looks like. I'd like to try some of these out, if possible.

Also, just how do you load and utilize cabinet external IRs with tonestack?
I plan to try downloading that Marshall demo pack from Redwirez and would like to figure out how to use them.

Cheers, and thanks for the great guitar demos!

exactly - and even more interesting is the signal splitting in Tonestack:
you're not restricted to a single linear path, but may use reverb on the clean input signal, while the 'driven' amp gets the delay (referring to the example chain)

  • Hi audiohub!
My signal chain is always very simple as you can see on the picture.i load an ir cab through fiddlicator.sometimes,i add my hardware pedals( plugged in a looper for signal integrity).
I like to keep things simple to only focus on what really matters...music!!
    Enjoy!

  • Thank you Flo! I will try your simpler setup with some various IR responses.

You mentioned using a Mesa cab IR. Which one do you use and like?
I found a large collection of responses with a number of Mesa IRs, and thought that might be a good place to start.

Here is a demo in which i use tonestack,an ir cab and my pedals.

  • tonestack is a gangster with a pretty face and then gold teeth and liquor dripping down its face.. this is good thing

  • Wow! this is wild! What an incredibly versatile app. Id say its worth the price even just for the flexibility of using all different plugins together.

ToneStack is my go-to. However, just so you know, Bias FX has the same ability to add in IAA apps into the signal chain.

Ya, it does, I don't ever find the need to use it in either of these apps, but it's nice to have that flexibility.

  • Now I feel curious about IR. Can anyone share a good link to Reach good Free IR ?

  • Anyone actually use Bias with Bias FX on the iPad? There's a major bug atm where I can't seem to edit a specific amp (in Bias from Bias FX) in a dual amp rig without it replacing both amps in the dual amp rig.

Yup, I've experienced the same thing. BIAS AMPS and BIAS FX offer lots of flexibility and great tones, but they sure aren't flawless when it comes to functionality. That dual-amp editing "feature" is particularly annoying.

  • I'm a bit of a metalhead and I can't stand Bias. It has really bad aliasing (I think that's what you call it) that I don't get with other apps. I don't think anything comes closer to the sound of real amps than Amplitube.

BIAS fx is great! I love it. No issues, works fantastic.

  • Bias FX/Amps works great on my ipad air 1. No problems whatsoever. I love the sound of it.

Me too. Does everything I need with a slick GU and fluid controls. It's when you spice things up with Timeless 2 and Saturn then things go to another level.

  • I love Bias FX on my iPad Mini 2. Getting a suitable MIDI pedalboard that could easily connect to the iPad and do what I need (without breaking the bank) was another story. I settled with a Behringer FCB1010 with the UNO chip mod. You really need to be happy with your presets before introducing a MIDI pedalboard as it's not as "plug 'n' play" as a Line6 Pod floorboard for example.

  • so I got my irigHD and downloaded all the free versions of the amps. I will say that I seem to enjoy tonestac the best. It just sounds more real to me in terms of sustain and natural note decay and dynamics. It could also be that I have spent more time with it than the others. I have jamup amplitube free and tonestack Go. really didnt like amplitube at all and did not lije the interface for amp controls at all. Jamup and Tonestack both allow me top see the full control panel.

even the free versions just offering the plexi and a tubescreamer is fine with me for now. It is truly amazing the power of these apps. So totally impressed. I played through aux in on my THR10 and was blown away.

  • Hopefully I can ask a side question here regarding Tonestack.

I got some serious hum going on. Different leads and different setups, through apogee jam or Novation audiohub etc.

Whats a nice "Crunch" Tonestack setup that can limit the hum?

Would appreciate any tips on this one, cheers! :)

Did you put a noise gate in the front of the chain? I've found adding two sometimes for the higher gain stuff works good.
