Dropbox?

today I deleted the app and deleted my account on Dropbox (after downloading all necessary files first to my hard drive). This is something I wanted to do years ago. The only reason why I kept using Dropbox was because iVCS3 is using this file hoster (although only for samples and recordings, not for presets?). Recently I found out how to use iCloud Drive for iVCS3 presets, so I can easily create patches on my iPad, upload them to iCloud, and download them to my iPhone.

If you don't know about the reason to boycott Dropbox, the answer is quickly found in an internet search. Also the political discussion can be done there, on the respective sites. Not here, because this is a forum for music only.

If you want to share your view regarding Dropbox, tell us about the advantages, usefulness, or obsoleteness. Keep it technical and pragmatic. Please do not mention that specific name which is member of the board of directors, and do not engage in political discussions. As an informed, mature participant of the internet, there's no need for that kind of stuff here. This all can (and should) be done elsewhere. Thank you.

  • I confess to being clueless up until about 2 minutes ago regarding the controversy.

I use it simply because it was the choice that integrated the most easily with my music making at the time (and still does).

Technically it works just fine for me, happy to hear of other proven options that have less "political baggage" though.

  • Thanks for the heads up. I took action.
I really liked Dropbox, but I bet I am going to love Dropbox Pro.

The CEO voiced a reasonable opinion about the actions of a short-fingered vulgarian.

lol, just googled it. I think ill move into using dropbox more :D Only ignorant fools dont realize that this short-fingered vulgarian only lies, so that stupid or just ignorant people get scared, as it makes it easier to manipulate them. Also if you scare people, they will vote based on more conservative values, as it feels more safe in scary environment. And this effect extends even to stuff like polls turning more against gay marriage..

WE NEED MORE PEOPLE LIKE THE CEO OF DROPBOX!!!

  • Have we started the sweep for "posts until thread closure" yet?

Put me down for 40

I hope there are more threads started about boycotting products that also claim to not be political, because I dig that funky cognitive dissonance.

Let's hope the originators do disingenuous with a bit more finesse the next time around.

I've been wanting a reason to go "Pro," and now I have it. Good behavior deserves to be rewarded.

No, no, I got a great laugh out of it, and it comforts me to know that people like the OP really do think the rest of the masses really are that dumb.

I have no idea of or interest in what the political or social beef referred to is, but regardless, I've used Dropbox for years without paying one dime, so I guess you could say I'm hurting them more by carrying on than by boycotting. Maybe the CEO did it on purpose to help weed out some of that dead weight.

If you guys want to hit them where it hurts, don't boycott, sign up and load up as many free accounts as you can. B)

  • Boycott a company taking a stand against fascism .... ? Pass.
    Very useful app.

  • Just curious: are you gonna boycott Apple, Microsoft, Google and Intel as well?

This is disingenuous to say the least. I urge all of my fellow forum members, of the left or the right, to leave this post alone. There's a place for argument, plenty of them actually; this is not that place. Let us do our best to keep ourselves focused here on what connects us.

Dang, I was just gonna say, "No, don't close it! This one's funny." But your very right, Johnny. Well, I don't mean very right. Probably left of center somewhat..er, nevermind...

this is a good question. But I have to follow my own rule and can't say any more to this.

Thanks to all for your posts.

this is also my intention. Let us focus on how we use Dropbox, or not, its advantages, etc. And put all the other arguments to other places. And focus on what connects us, music.

...I don't get it. Are you trying to get people to convince you to install it again? When I delete an app I am typicaly done with it and don't ask people if I did the right thing... Or whatever it is you are doing. Bit of this  perhaps?

if iCloud or any other cloud service is "better" than Dropbox, I don't know. And I have to admit that I'm also very clueless about this topic. There is just a connection of this one person working for Dropbox whose name we don't want to mention here that drove me to delete my Dropbox account.

Some time ago someone on this forum advised me to delete my Dropbox account. I'm not sure, but my memory tells me it was LaLa, a member of this forum which is known for his political agitation. My answer was that I was aware of the controversy, but didn't see a fault in using Dropbox as a tool. But I wasn't comfortable in my statement, and spoke to myself that I'll have to think about it later.

Now that I found a way to work in my comfort zone (transferring iVCS3 presets using iCloud), I remembered this forum member's call, and acted accordingly. That's all. Which also means that I'm a coward. I feel ashamed.

What I also want to say: thank you all for being calm and reasonable in this discussion. Very appreciated.

I'm not certain about your comments, they are not very clear. Please try again. You surely have to say something to this topic, so please be open and tell us what you think. I really don't know about it all, if that's what you're targeting at. I'm just an average guy.

  • Well the only thing I have to say about Dropbox is that additional storage is much more expensive than one drive and less convenient than iCloud so I don't use it that much.

Well, OneDrive is cheaper for sure, you can get 1TB + full MS Office for $7/month, but how many iOS apps support OneDrive?

I wish Dropbox had more plans, something in-between the free one and 1TB for $10 per month. I must say I don't have any reasons to complain - I have 12GB for free, but I'd be tempted if they offered 50GB for $1 to match iCloud's offering

  • Pretty much any app that supports open in for export supports one drive.

  • Ill just leave this here:

  • Don't leave that here, we don't want it. You could have just left a link to it in your Dropbox, if you wanted to be relevant.

Sorry, its already there and Im sure some people want to hear opinions based on reason. Those who just want to listen to fear mongering baboon trying to manipulate them, dont have to watch it(not that those people would listen to anything related to reason anyways).

As I said in the last lala thread:

"Sebastian, can you find a way to ban the illiterate morons who can't seem to figure out this is a forum about making music, predominantly on iOS, and not their personal toilet?"

It looks like we need a few more [Deleted User]s.

Hint - it's mainly the same idiots from the lala threads.

  • I'm making music on my personal toilet though.
