Listening to some of the presets over there just now, amazing sounds! Both the Swell perf. And the lead perf. were awesome!
Ah yeah, just uploaded them, mainly so we could test what happened in the forum, but yeah, that thread with a couple of short noodles by yours truly can be found here: http://www.livingmemorysoftware.com/joomla/index.php/hidden-menu-item/just-a-quick-noodle-with-a-couple-of-presets
As far I can tell, 31.3 mb.
If you save presets (which you probably want to do) my current presets seems to be somewhere between 8-17kb/each. Yep, kilobytes.
Very reasonable. I also like your snippets. I'm not sure I understand how this works exactly if there isn't any layering going on. Is this triggering sequences within the stack of layers/performances? Somewhat similar to the way iWavestation works?
Ah, haha, terminology confusion on my part, I should probably clarify in that post.![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
When I say there is no layering I mean audio tracks. It is one-shots/one-takes of me, playing one keyboard on one (at a time) "performances" in LayR. A performance, which consists of several instruments, which in turn consist of 1+ LayR-layers. So, yeah, there is layers going on within LayR, but it is only a stereo pair of audio out from the app. I'll update the actual post.
But, it sounds like there's more than one "performance" ie. you playing keys. Are you playing one piece, then layering another performance on top of that performance within LayR? Your post sounded like you were playing just once and triggering the whole composition.
Also, have you done a demo video yet?![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
I'll likely sit this one out and wait for the early adopters to shake out any launch bugs first, unless the dev does a decent launch sale of course, but it's looking very cool so far.
Hehe, no videos (from me) yet, but will make some soon I think. Have been busy tinkering with it as it is far too much fun, and as you can hear, quite powerful.
So, to make it clear: there are 4 songs in the demo playlist. Those 4 are me pressing "record" once for each snippet, which are separate "songs" (as far as SoundCloud is concerned) in AUM and then I play one take on my 49-key midi keyboard and then I press "stop" in AUM. Then I uploaded them to Soundcloud, and they are played one after the other.
The reason some of them sound incredibly rich, with both bass, pads, evolving strings, little glitter dust, echoes and some plucking melodies with harmonies is all due to how LayR works and functions. All of those things happens within LayR, in layers.
This means that the bass sounds doesn't actually go all the way up to the lead area and vice versa, the lead sounds can't be heard in the bass notes. The pads, fairy glitter and evolving stuff is what LayR can do. Or it can do a pretty straight forward thing, like the lead snippet.
Did I make it clearer or did I confuse it more?![ ](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smiley.png)
Really amazing sounds! Hope there's a great intro price.
Uh.. yeah... I know how recording with AUM and uploading to Soundcloud works.![;) ;)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
However, the last part of how you're playing once per each of the 4 snippets, but getting all of the "bass, pads, evolving strings, little glitter dust, echoes and some plucking melodies with harmonies" ALL at the same time... is what I'm not clear on. Are you setting up individual sequences that make of each layer of the performance, and then when you're playing the keyboard, it's triggering all of those layered sequences?
Haha, sorry, I just wanted to be totally clear I hadn't done overdubs or studio magic.![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Well, that is the power of LayR. I didn't set up anything. The dev had made a bunch of presets, yeah? The time I spent in creating those 4 snippets, after having put my kids to bed (i.e. not prepared anything as far as music goes) was to sit down, turn on my midi keyboard, quickly pick a preset, record it, stop recording, rince, repeat. It probably took me 15 minutes in total from "nothing" to "Soundcloud" (posted to LM Software forum for testing, as THAT was actually what I wanted to test: if the forum allowed embeds).
Now, those preset performances the dev obviously has spent some time on, some of them are utterly beautiful (I only picked 4 now, on random, except for the lead). He has set up his layers to act/re-act in certain ways given certain parameters when you play certain things. The result is what you hear. The power in LayR is obviously that you and I can create peformances/presets/sounds like that ourselves. I for one would love to midi bind a bunch of parameters to my aftertouch in my keyboard to dictate behaviour or certain layers, or increase intensity etc. These presets don't do that right now, as aftertouch isn't a granted feature, so the dev has mainly concentrated on binding the mod wheel to certain parameters.
None of these demos contain the arpeggiator or any sequencer of any kind. It is all just cleverly put together performances/instruments/layers out of the box. And me playing it. In one-takes. In almost the same time as it takes for you to listen to it, without preparation from me.
This is essentially what I figured and imagined. So, in a way it's similar to iWavestation, but with A LOT more control and customization, etc.
Is there a way to import in your own samples to be used, sequenced, triggered within LayR performance patches?
I haven't gotten iWavestation myself (yet) so can't really compare in a fair way. I do know there indeed is a lot of control in LayR, I feel like I've only scraped the surface and been impressed by that, and found it very usable and simple to work with.![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Well, that is the thing with LayR, and one of the reasons it is so small in file size: it doesn't use samples or wavetables. However, for "triggering" them, provided you have apps that can play them, LayR can most probably trigger. The arpeggiator in LayR can trigger 8 different midi channels if you wanted it to. That would obviously create a dependency on whatever host app you use to be started and connected as well then of course, but triggering (which I haven't tested) should be possible. I think. Probably. Most likely. Perhaps. Not the same thing as iWavestation though.
Looking forward to Layring her down when this drops Going to Layer her all over the house! Gonna make her sing when I Layr! This synth might even be better than sex, who knows for sure yet?
I want a new app!
Can you tell?
Joomla still exists? ;p
I've had no influence or insight on that selection, but yeah, apparently.![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
I like iWavestation, but have only recently been diving it. From what I can tell, LayR could be all that I like about iWavestation so far, but with much more potential to customize to taste. Nothing against iWavestation, but it feels a bit more restrictive in what you can actually do to shape the individual sounds.
Looking forward to the launch. If there's a nice launch sale, I'll likely take a chance and join the early adopters. Without one, I'll wait and see how she shakes out. Looks very promising though. And, thanks for the feedback info!
You must get laid, like, never.![;) ;)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/wink.png)
And also must be unaware of the fact that many forum members are women....
Quite aware and managing nicely tyvm. But I really do want a nice new fun app though! Even if I am not politically correct enough for some thank God!
Always a fine line that, one man's freedom from a sense of political correction and another's sense of simple decency.
Agreed. Especially here come to think of it. Seen some real doozys .
Umm...right, so...yeah! I think it sounds really good!![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
is the x/y pad for midi note input like the ikaossilator?
Currently there is no X/Y pad. There is one on the to-do list though, but that is probably intended mainly as a midi controller, though that is me guessing. If you have a specific feature request, head over to the forum and make a suggestion!![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
Although I like what I've heard so far... All of them, including the dev's demos tracks from his site forum, have a kind of sameyness to them. Different, but the character all sounds very similar to me. Is that because the dev created all the presets so far? And, have you created any of you own yet?
Again, it's a good sound overall, but everything so far kind of sounds like it came from the same synth.
I noticed that - brought back terrible, terrible memories.
Have to say I agree. They were ok, but I'm not hearing anything I couldn't do with a few of my existing synths layered in AUM. The all-in-one factor's good, but at twenty quid this will be a hard sell for those of us with a bunch of good synths already.
A plus for me would be rock-solid, many layered performance, as the AUM setup mentioned above can be prone to freezes and drop-outs.
It could be all three of those I guess.
Firstly, yeah, those are presets by the dev. I wanted to test other things (his forum capabilities) so didn't spend time on these sounds, I just picked a few that I like and thought was representative of how many layers combined in one take can sound. The "Evolving" clip for example is just one held keypress of C4, even though it ebbs and flows back and forth, to show "it can".
Secondly, I probably picked them due to my current preference of sounds, as they indeed sound quite similar to what I would use in my songs currently. I did not pick sounds that didn't inspire me to noodle with them directly, no matter how good they are, though they are there.
Thirdly: I could be unconsciously biased as I've played around with it for a week or so now (and am, if possible, even more impressed now). I mainly see "future possibilities" when creating my own sounds/presets/performances. They are quite likely to sound like they come from me. I have only tried creating a handful of presets so far, as I started realising the existing presets, which might not look like a huge collection at first has its strength in how I combine them. This has meant that when I think "I want to create a fat squelchy bass" I combine two presets to see how close I get before even twiddling knobs or adding more, and have been quite satisfied with what I've heard and moved on.
This is also why I would love for it to be released in the wild, as more people then will be able to contribute with little building blocks of sounds (layers, presets) that others can take to places the original layer creator probably didn't think of. I had to offload my own presets during testing (to see how iCloud sync behaved, or not) and didn't bother loading them back on for these clips.
I think the uniqueness with LayR for me is the "less moving parts" bit whilst still being able to create some really complex sound combinations. Those combinations could be anything the user prefers. I happen to like dark cinematic ambient stuff, or chillout, which excludes me wishing for some sounds that might be the holy grail for someone else.
But all in all it is "just" a synth with 2 Oscillators (with all the shapes), 2 LFO's, 2 envelopes (with times up to 100 sec), 2 mix/effects set-up in a layer, and I can combine 256 of them with different attack, decay and sustain, with 8 separate audio outs. On paper you probably already own a couple of apps that can do similar things (apart from the "combine 256 of them" part), so the separate sounds on a layer level probably isn't that unique.
@MonzoPro : do you mean my "old" (images) complex set-ups? Not the one for these audio clips I guess? As these clips were as simple as it comes: AUM hosting LayR (IAA). End. The only simpler setup would be LayR, only (but that would exclude me recording it).
I haven't heard the others, only the one's Skiphunt was referring to above. They're nice, but I haven't heard anything yet that's making me want to shell out £20 on another synth - particularly with the Apple 'clean-up' threats to existing older apps. I'll check the thread and see if I can find your old one's. I do like the Hillage-esque '3PartArp' on their website though...that's really lovely.
Not knocking the synth at all, it sounds good, I love the UI (very Audulus) and to be able to build layers is a neat, unique feature. If there's an intro price I might be tempted, otherwise I'll see what the others make of it.
