I was having a little buyer's remorse already with this app this morning. At first, I was thinking that as a non-musician it was silly to have purchased.

Then, I started digging into the settings, just messing around with different presets, using it to not necessarily "play" other synths, but control them for slow sweeps and soundscape stuff... and changed my mind.

I really like the sound engine too. As a controller, for me at least, I think it's tied with TC-Data/TC-11. Might even have a slight edge. When I stopped trying to "play" something, but instead use it to control sounds... it was more intuitive for me. And, once I realized that I don't have to use/learn ALL of the depth of control this app is capable of to reap great benefit, and just use the level I'm comfortable with right now, it became more fun.

    Might be a keeper. :)

Good to see you down here in the basement Mister Hunt, we kept a wet spot warm for you....

Good distractions from the news, at least until I can find a way to be traveling again. Weather's getting nice. Might need to get back to some motorcycle camping in places without internet access or cell signals.

But for the moment, I'll settle into this cozy wet spot you've kindly kept balmy for me. ;)

Well... that resistance thing didn't last very long. ;) this is really a cool app. Even runs on my iPhone 5. Cool letting something generative like Quincey drive it, but be able to play the surface at the same time. I like most of the synth engine too, but how do you shut it off or mute the internal sounds while you're playing midi out to another synth? All I've seen that works is turning down the amplitude. Is this what you do?

I knew you'd cave. Yes, I just turn the thing down when controlling.

Check out Jordan Rudess's YouTube channels for a run-down if you haven't already.

The physical modelling stuff and control of each parameter is super cool.

    Also this one:

I just finished this 30min tutorial. It took me awhile because I had to keep backing up to rewatch stuff.

WOW!!! This is an incredible app and definitely worth all the hype. Worth it's full list and an amazing bargain on sale.

@TheVimFuego are the random control settings you mentioned (I think that was you) the "Variance" controls?

Anyone who doesn't have this app and on the fence like I was, check out this video. The depth and detail this app is capable of is spectacular. After you finish the video, keep in mind that the stellar sound engine/synth is also completely controllable by external sources as well, and generative apps like Refraktions, Xynthesizr, and Quincy.

In addition to all of that, you can use this magnificent controller for external synths via midi too. I've been experimenting using GeoShred to control the Analog, Physical Modeling, Additive instrument synths within Dhalang MG, as well as controlling the samples within Dhalang's in-app slicer.

I don't know why I had it stuck in my head that this was strictly a guitarist tool. It's that too of course. Maybe it's the "Shred" in the name? In any case, this is once incredible beast and "a thing unto itself" as JohnnyG described it.

  • Just watched the video! This beast is soooooo amazing!! I honestly think people are turned away by the name Shred but I think it is sooooo much more than a shredding guitar app! I really would love to get some more patches especially like the ones on the video! Really loved the one where it payed 6 different strings at once.

I think you're right about the "Shred" thing. I didn't pay much attention because I thought it was strictly an fx thingie meant for big-haired rock gods who love to "shred". LOL Sorry.. I just amused myself with that last one. ;)

But this app is an interface wonder of iOS programming. Stellar quality sound and genius level architecture.

And yet, still accessible to mortals and somewhat intuitive. Even without reading anything or watching the demo, you can get a lot of return just on the surface.

  • yessir! thanks for the recommendation. Best $14.99 I've spent...er... this week. ;)

  • edited March 2017

I paid higher but it is worth every penny spent!!! Honestly I highly recommend this amazing guitar app!

The sheer amount of tweaking is enough to have every guitar or non guitar playing geek interstd for a very long time. I have my real pedalboard and a blues amp and I'm dialing some good tone in GeoShred!

  • @skiphunt Yes I was alluding to the variance which can be applied to the physical modelling characteristics.

I think some people will be put off by both the "Shred" angle and some of the bling, underneath it is so much more as you've discovered.

I see the Modstep guys have just uploaded a YouTube vid integrating GeoShred with AniMoog and mapping the XY pad to the XY in Moog.

I think the sale is having the desired effect, lots of fresh interest.

I'm glad I didn't pass on this one. Thanks for info. The latest modstep videos have been clear and to the point. Off to find. Cheers

  • Love tha patches on Geoshred, but I'm a keyboard player. not a guitarist. I wish there was a keyboard mode for Geoshred.

Use another keyboard app with midi out to control GeoShred - problem solved

  • I highly recommend Aleph Looper or infinite Looper the best keyboard!

  • I had put Geoshred on my wish list when the sale started, and I think that I may be one of those put off by the "shred", because I've yet to pull the trigger. Certainly becoming swayed by the praise around here, however. The idea of Geoshred working well as an alternate controller for Animoog and Model 15 makes it tempting, as does the fact that it apparently has a Robert Fripp preset...I'm feeling the itch.

Dude what are you waiting for??? This app is no joke the real thing man!
I had it controlling Model 15 and vise versa, pure joy!!
The built in sounds and effects will bring huge smile to your face :D :)

  • Just started with this thing today. It's extremely impressive. One question: am I right that there is no velocity sensitivity, only a slider for a 'humanize velocity' option? So far that seems like the one area where iFretless is superior.
