Smashed my iPhone 5 today :(
While dinkin' on my car earlier today, I set my iPhone 5 down inside the hood... reconnected something, then slammed the hood shut before heading off for a nice drive. Noticed the hood didn't seem perfectly aligned.. and then the color drained from my face and my stomach sank.
iPhone 5 screen is not only smashed, but the whole housing/frame is bent, so I can't just buy a new screen.
It still works because I was able to connect it to iTunes and to a full fresh backup.
So, now what to do? I pulled the sim and managed to get it to work in an adaptor, inside another adaptor, to fit inside an old iPhone 3 that I kept as an mp3 player. Incredibly, it still works as a phone, but I can't connect to the iTunes store, or set up my gmail accounts, etc. because they're all saying my software is too old and not "secure". I managed to set up one old POP email address, and that's about it.
Looks like I'm buying a new phone. I don't want the 7, but it looks like most of the 6s's are sold out. Is a plain 6 that much of a step back from the 6s? There are 6s Pluses out there, but I really don't want a big fat phablet. Havent seen any SE's unlocked available as refurbs. I know my iPhone 5 was on the chopping block already, but I was going to keep it until the battery failed.
So, it looks like it's either go for one of those huge Plus phones, or settle for a 6. Didn't the 6 have problems Apple never really acknowledged or fixed? Is it that that much of a step back from the 6s?
I think God hates me as much as a few of the regular Audiobus forum members evidently do. lol #firstworldproblems

SE is brilliant. I went from a 5s to a 6s, then settled happily on a SE.
Same beast of a processor as the 6s, and Better for me as I ended up disliking the big 4.7" phone screen size.
Google tells me there's this: https://www.groupon.com/deals/gg-apple-iphone-se-gsm-unlocked-smartphone-refurbished
Not sure what other deals there are out there. I've been happy with the two i purchased on eBay.
I have a 6s+ and honestly don't find it to be cumbersome.
I have an iPhone 4S, 5S, 6 Plus and 6S Plus and though I love the size of the Plus models for browsing the Internet and making music, I think the iPhone 5, 5S and SE are the best designed and most beautiful of the iPhone family.
The 6s 128 unlocked is only going for about $30-$50 more than a 64GB unlocked SE on eBay. Is there a reason to get an SE instead with only half the storage of a 128GB 6s?
What do you look out for when buying an iPhone off of eBay? Any common gotchas?
Ditto. I have actually, tentatively, begun noodling the odd tune on it, something I never did with the five, too small for my manly and enormous poety fingers (Donald).
If I had to go for any iPhone, it'd be the SE. The 128gb model is very affordable, and having a smaller screen size is NOT a deal-breaker (since I mostly use the phone for music listening and if I need to text/skype, I have a Bluetooth keyboard I use when I type on my iPad).
That said, listen mate, use your pants pocket for putting your phone down. If you put it down elsewhere, you're simply asking for a moneyload of trouble. It wasn't a cheap P.O.S. Android phone you totaled there. In the future, you must treat these devices better than you would a bar of pure gold.
I don't like the 6s+ size because I didn't feel I could use it one-handed like I can with my iPhone 5. Comes in handy when I've got a camera in my right hand and checking something on the phone with my left hand. I can also work a 6s with one hand but it's a stretch. No go for one-handed use on the 6s+.
Yes, normally I put it in my pocket. I've been using an iPhone a long time. Carried one for 150,000 miles of motorcycle travel and backpacked with one in 8 different countries. Never even scratched a screen. Today was my first absent minded fail. Must be gettin old.
Today I was trying to run quick errands, then squeeze in a run, then swim laps. I was wearing running shorts with no pockets. Tried to do too much while in a hurry, and dropped the ball.
Part of why I'm so happy with the SE is the lower value. I feel much better carrying around a $220 SE from eBay that has a crack on the back glass near the camera and otherwise works perfectly. The 6s was on contract, paying off a $649 purchase over a 2 year period. I didn't enjoy carrying it around as much.
With the SE I feel more ready for one of the inevitable fail moments.
Good point actually...
I'm all for keeping the investment minimal, but I'm a little apprehensive about buying an iPhone off eBay. Just seems there are too many ways that could go wrong. Still, the prices on eBay are awfully tempting.
The new price for a 128GB SE isn't too bad. Might go have another look tomorrow and see if I still feel the same about the larger 6s+.
The se is basically the same size as a 5. But with the performance of the 6s. Would be perfect for you I think.
This
I find it's the perfect size
I love the SE. I think the small size can give it some advantages as a smartphone.
I love the SE too
The SE has just a too small screen if you want to make music with apps like gadget or fieldscaper. A lot of universal audio apps are just scaled down iPad apps and on iPhone 5s or SE handling them feels just too clumsy. Buttons are just too small if you have bigger fingers. That said if you only use especially and dedicated made iPhone apps for your production like TriqTraq or Figure the SE is okay. I thing the Iphone + phones are just too heavy and big for use as daily driver. Best of both worlds would be just the 4.7 inch iPhones. On the other hand just buy a cheap (Android or whatever) mobile phone, I personally hardly do anything music related on my phone, except listening music , and safe the money to buy a better iPad.
For eBay purchases: simple rule is only buy something that clearly states what is included. The big eBay gotchas are locked iCloud accounts(stolen?), bad ESN, or the phone is still on a carrier contract. If the listing states those are all clear then you have eBay's return policy if the item doesn't arrive as expected.
Love my SE, and the fact it cost half as much as my previous 5 is probably part of the reason. I picked up a Black Friday deal and got 64gb for the price of 16, and not even scratching the surface with filling it up.
Easily powerful enough for music apps, but the small screen size is probably limiting for serious work.
Skip, another idea...do you really make so much music on iPhone?
I don't, and I am very happy with an Android smartphone~ $100 that does everything like iPhone ...
For the rest of the money I would get a brand new 128gb iPad that everybody is talking about
I only use iPad for music...but in Europe the phone contracts are different...I pay €4 a month for 50gb of internet and unlimited calls and SMS...
Just my 2c....YMMV
Well... now, I just don't know. It's true... I really don't use my iPhone for sound/music stuff much at all. Yet, I've got all these universal apps. I'm not sure if the reason for that is because the iPhone 5 screen is really too small for many of the apps, or... it I just rather have all the real estate of an iPad screen.
I do like one-handed use and not bulky in the pocket... and I do use the iPhone while traveling for quick photo/video edits to share. And, I've got a lot of photo/video apps too... so sticking with Apple is likely the way I'll go.
Even toyed with pairing down and just using this old iPhone 3 that just put back into commission temporarily, but I can't believe how slow this thing is. It's basically only good for phone calls and texts now. I can't even sign into my apple account to access the store or gmail, because it says the iOS is too old and poses a security risk.
Will go check out the different sizes, then see what the best deal is that I can find. Not sure if I'm more likely to get "gotcha" from a local craigslist user, or eBay.
Thanks for all the perspectives and suggestions!
I wouldn't use my SE for Gadget, for example, but as it's as powerful as my Air 2 I could quite happily use it as a sound module, for example, for live work. Plug in a MIDI keyboard, dial up your favourite synth preset or sample player, plug a cable into the headphone socket (yes it still has one) and the other end into the PA and you're cooking.
Some of the apps with better UI's work well on it too - KFRT for example is perfectly usable.
I'll likely be upgrading my Air 2 to whatever "Pro" comes out in the Fall. I don't really use my iPhone as much for music... or anything else really. I know I can, and I know I could more... but the reality is that I only really use it as a phone, to dink around on a sound app briefly as a preview, or a quick photo/video edit while traveling.
So, I think I'd rather save my pennies for a new iPad later in the year instead of a nicer phone.
So, I'm now leaning toward the best "bargain" I can find to save money and move on. Looks like the 6 has the best value pricing out there in the used market, but I'm hesitant of how long before it's made obsolete by Apple's iOS updates. I'm guessing a 6 would likely be safe from Apple's chopping block for another couple of years.
Ouch. I wince just hearing about it.
FWIW, I just had a 1953 Gibson acoustic guitar fall and strike the corner of an air conditioner, leaving a gash that nearly pierced its face.
There is no joy in Mudville.
What's weird is I kind of imagined it happening right before it happened. I laid the phone down to connect something real quick, imagined accidentally slamming the hood down on the phone, told myself better not forget to grab it... then slammed the hood down on the phone just like I'd pre-imagined it.
Sometimes I wonder if you actually make or will your future, mostly with thought. When I'm shooting basketball baskets (we play H.O.R.S.E. at the park) it seems like every time I miss an easy one, I imagined missing it in exactly the same fashion that I actually miss it.
Kinda trippy to think about, but I've often wondered how much of what happens in our own realities is due to what we pre-imagine happening before it's set in motion as physical reality. Does that make sense?
For what it's worth, I've had good luck on eBay. I try to pick up different models for testing (both hardware, and different versions of iOS). So far, everything I've gotten (probably about 4 phones) has worked fine, and they've been a fraction of the retail price.
Yes. "Self-fulfilling prophecy" is the term psychologists and sociologists use. You become so worried about something-- maybe even obsessed with it--that you unconsciously cause it to happen.
I found a used iphone SE 64gb. Asked $300 but says she could take $240 Supposedly clean. not the color I want (Rose Gold) ie. pink.. but I'll put it in a case anyway. The seller gave me the IMEI number, but I'm having trouble finding out if it's truly unlocked from that number she gave me. And, one of the sits says it has 1GB of RAM. Didn't all SE phones have 2GB of RAM? Or, was it just the new 128GB ones?
Done. Grabbed the SE 64GB for $240
Hey Skip you probably know this already but I found it interesting and inspiring (my phone is as much a camera as anything else) that the SE shares the same 12 megapixel front camera spec as the 6s.
Yeah, that's why I went with the used SE and took a chance... it's was more than a $100 less than the cheapest 6s I could find on eBay... it was local so I could check it out first to verify it'd been unlocked and in good shape, etc.
Only down side is it's Rose Gold, ie. Pink. lol But, hell... I guess I can just slap it into a case or cover it up with Hello Kitty stickers.
$240 was the lowest price I could find on eBay for the same thing that didn't have something wrong with it. She was originally asking $300 so I feel ok about what I paid.
I wanted the 6s 2GB ram and 4K video, but like the smaller SE form factor. I'm content for now I think.
I had a 5 & now a 6s & I do appreciate the extra real estate.
