What i meant by nostalgia was more that, with me being synth ignorant, Moog doesn't mean anything special

I guess i'm just wondering what makes them worth their price tag. Not complaining about the price by the way. I think most of us can agree that iOS music devs are often severely underpaid. Just wondering what Moog synths do that makes them worth it comparatively

    Educate yourself: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moog_synthesizer?wprov=sfsi1

Seriously. Read this Wiki article to get a basic understanding of Moog's history, production, and influence.

    Very informative, thanks

Still leaves me wondering what is so special about Animoog and Model 15 compared to other top iOS synths though

Is it the sound quality of the synth engine? The tweaking you can do? The versatility?

To be honest i'm very tempted to get one of them, if only to support devs who are supporting AB3 out of the gate, but on the other hand i have a lot of synths already so i need some angle to justify it :D

Sound quality for me, fatter (phatter?) than a fat thing.

I hear you about having a lot of synths. Model 15 in particular is a triumph of software development, Animoog takes a bit of effort to sound less like a typical Animoog but worth digging in.

Dig around YouTube for some demos but the sound you hear will be so much richer when you hear them from the apps themselves.

Model 15 is also an excellent modular learning tool if that's your thing.

I have dabbled in modular synths so maybe that's the perfect excuse for getting it! :D

Are both essentials or can Model 15 do with Animoog does?

  • @jn2002dk It's nice to read you being considerate about your purchases. I think a lot of folks on this board, myself included, often grab new apps for the novelty and low cost. Model 15, obviously, is neither low-cost (relative to other iOS apps) nor new (if you consider its heritage), but if modular synthesis and the quintessential '70s synth sound are of any interest, this app is by all means a must-have. I'm basing that on my own experience using the app to create and experiment with patches as well as the testimony of those who (unlike myself) have owned physical Moog synthesizers and assert the sound quality of this app is spot-on.

I don't consider Animoog "essential," although I'm sure others would disagree, but I do consider Model 15 essential for those interested in modular synthesis from either a sonic or an historical perspective. Likely, however, if you come to fall in love with the Model 15, no doubt you'll want to pick up Animoog, which is absolutely a fun beast and a great compliment to Model 15 and many other music apps.

Keep in mind that some have gotten lost in Moog synthesizers for almost their entire lives. It's a machine that seems to have endless fascination for many musicians. I'm really just beginning that journey. Maybe I'll see you somewhere in that rabbit hole!

    As @kgmessier said, different beasts.

Knowing your interest in modular I'd snap up Model 15 first, it's a work of art and worth every cent. I too hesitated at the cost but needn't have worried.

What device do you have? I needs a fair bit of horsepower especially if you're running it on the bus with other apps.

    Animoog:

The key thing for me is that it can produce different sounds to other synths. Due to the ability to morph through different waves in different ways. And it's very high quality sounding to me.

    Model 15:

To me it sounds like a very high quality analogue synth (but there are of courses others on the App Store). I think people more into modular synthesis than me see it's modular functionality as the main thing that sets it apart though.

  • I agree that's the thing with Animoog, it's the one which I think you can produce the most original sounds with and it's also easy to modulate the sound and create movement. No Link or AUv3 yet but the new AB3 midi update makes it even easier to use than before.

Model 15 is also great and the most analogue sounding synth on the iPad imo.

  • @jn2002dk I agree with what others have said.
Another thing: Animoog has a superb, playable keyboard. The scale options along with the polyphonic aftertouch, the implementation of portamento, the glide, the tuning correction, it all adds up to an uncanny experience that is very unique but also extremely precise and consistent. It is remarkably similar to learning to play a physical instrument. You really have to spend some time in it to see what I mean.

The Animoog keyboard is also built into Model 15 so presumably the same would be true of Model 15. I haven't spent enough time with it to say for sure.

  • Cheers for the replies guys

I'm sure i'll end up getting both but for now i'll research both some more and probably flip a coin to decide which one to get first ;)

    Flip it twice!

    Heads x2: Get Model 15
    Tails x2: Get Animoog
    One of each: Get both!

It's the only way to know for sure.

    Hah that's a great idea!

  • I would recommend model 15 first and Animoog second.
