[Video] Actually making good music with apps

  • Just saw this video on my youtube feed and reminded me of this topic

First of all, I'm not a fan of his work. And, I think his head-boppin' havin' fun demo video for Beathawk 2 was likely more of a deterrent for me and contributed to why I didn't buy that one. Not my thing.

That being said, all of us obviously love audio apps and we'd all love to see the platform continue to evolve. Right?

Well, at present we have a bit of a problem. The talented developers have to do this purely for the love of it, but love doesn't always pay the bills. There aren't enough of us iOS audio geeks to make further development profitable enough. We all can say we'll by the IAPs and try to support our favorite devs by buying more apps we really don't need, but that's obviously not enough. Very talented developers release incredible apps that languish because they have to abandon the incredible app they've developed to go get a real job.

We need more app volume consumption and I don't think most of us here have the size of audience that's required to hit a critical mass. When folks like Andrew take the time to pimp some apps they love and show how they're using it, it doesn't matter if we like the music or think it's "art" or not. They have audience who aspire to be like them and will buy what they recommend. The hip-hop producer's video I mentioned that was shared by @RedSkyLullaby I believe, is more of the legit endorsement videos iOS sound apps need to get closer to critical mass.

It ain't gonna happen from the the obscure audio forums that only a few hundred (if that) audio nerds hang out in. You need some actual movers and shakers to spread the word so that that audio app consumption hits volumes that make development worthwhile for the developers. If that happens, we ALL win.

So I applaud Andrew's efforts, even if I'm not really his target audience and even if that poppy bouncy hip-hop funky stuff ain't really my cup-o-tea.

(Though the term "hater" would also perhaps imply some jealousy or a need to assure everyone that this isn't as good as they might think.)

This is a good urban dictionary style definition, but there's also the flip side where the person being criticized (or their supporters) dismiss any negative comments as coming from haters. I'm not one to play the generational card, but this does seem to be a phenomenon with younger people where everyone is a winner just for participating.

As for the video, it was interesting enough for a few minutes of my time, but I sort of knew what I was going to get with the title of "Actually making good music with apps" -- which struck me as haughty and presumptuous right of the bat.

    Anyway, good discussion here.

In the middle of reading through this, but you make a good point here about the title of the video. The overuse of adverbs has gotten out of hand in the past 5 years or more. It is often a telling indicator (or alarm) about the mindset of the person.

looks like a pretty good time :D

So this conversation got a little silly, feelings were felt. I think we have determined that the only solution is to be as e-cool as possible, or perhaps, not. Never be cool - and save the world (somehow).

I doubt that Andrew -- sorry, Mr. Huang -- or anyone else for that matter is intentionally putting out "landfill" music. Dare I say, what makes your music so much more valuable... ? ;)

I'm enjoying this interesting discussion, although as the "everyone is awesome" point of view seems to be piling on a little forcefully, I'll share some 'philosophically augmented' opinion from the opposing point of view:

The ideas represented in art frontrun the collective mind of society.

Look at the artwork and fiction of any given era and the facts of the following decades. When the subject matter focussed on utopia and the infinite possibility of human ingenuity, we achieved amazing things and started (just started.. ) to build a peaceful and unified world. When fiction focusses on apocalypse and conspiracy, the rot starts to set in. We need a boost, yeah? It's us artists (every single one) on whom that responsibility falls.

So when artists put out derivative 'Landfill [insert genre here]' content under a carefully crafted business/marketing model (and immaculately sculpted eyebrows), they're not just making content that doesn't contribute towards the furthering of their field, but are also shirking the societal responsibility of art for their own prosperity and egoistical satisfaction. Not that I'm taking a stand against that (we've all got to make a living) but when you choose to use a cultural platform to mass produce 'curated' content with no message beyond "Look at me!" to the widest possible audience you can 'strategically target', you're no longer an artist. You're simply running a business.

That said though, this is nothing against "Andrew's" (first name terms?? .. ECOOL) work. He's just the businessman to coincidentally fall under the humourous line of fire. I watched a few of his other videos and he has some cool stuff. I like the concepts behind a lot of his work and they very competently uphold modern production 'norms', although his skill as a composer is left me uninspired. I liked his video of a track 'made from water'.. Great concepts, some really nice musical textures, great production, can't remember a single moment of the music.

I've sided the most with your take on all of this. It's a poor paraphrase, but I can't remember the exact Sam Phillips quote:

'The audience will follow what the artists do.'

An adage that seems to be lost as far as popular music goes. The point is to lead popular sentiment in a direction, that, if not positive, is at least thoughtful.

  • The most important tip I can give anyone is this: Never compose musical cadences; rather, endeavour to cultivate your acoustically-pre-conceived sources. It is of paramount importance that melodic, theoretical approach-phrases must never be allowed to become technical, or coherently complex. All composers should recreate a variety of pitches, and (if this transforms poly-theatrical works), proceed to challenge traditionally until the best result is achieved. It must be remembered that improvising imitations, especially if they are ambiguous (or even bitonal), should be avoided. My latest piece begins with a rather developmental ‘sketch-fanfare’, before absolutely transforming the existing contrasting material into a more structuredly-spectral state, a process I term ‘aleatorically-choreographic-recontextualising.

I can't believe you'd write that and not even have the decency to credit Bo Diddley.

Credit actually goes to Dominic Irving. I was curious to see how well his BS generator content would blend in with some of the other posts here. And plus, why not. I can't think of any value to add to this thread other than a poor attempt at humor.

    It's awesome.

  • If this video was titled "Actually Finishing Music With Apps And Ableton" I can't see room for beef but alas dude used the violently subjective word "Good" and that's potentially offensive (calling your own stuff "good" seems like a super basic faux pas).

My own metric of "good" art-anything is that it takes me someplace and I want to return there.

  • Funny, if the guy wasn't successful no one would give a shit what he said.

I actually agreed with the sentiment in that post! (The bits that weren't incomprehensible ;) ). Rings true to the emphasis that seems to be put on harmony over melody in much composition. You can write a more powerful cadence with an emotively sculpted melodic resolution over a very 'weak' theoretical resolution in harmonic terms, than by uniformly thinking in harmonic blocks and connecting the dots with melody in a mathematical way.

I assume it's just because harmony is more easily categorised than melody, which takes a much more refined intuition to master.

Bonus points for befuddled were lost using a contraction instead of a possesive adjective. Common mistake for millenials. Oh, and the wrong preposition was used, unless he was talking about twine.
    Snarky 40 yr old humor.

But i am firmly on both sides of this ridiculous argument. Only thom yorke manages to do whatever the fuck he wants, be a critical success and still be hugely popular. More often than not you have choose to appeal to others or yourself. Or you have to have to love what the masses love, in which case you are lucky. I think i have 3 subscribers on my youtube channel. I am "edorky".

I love how you old folks love to correct pplz grammar ... it still doesn't change the fact that you lack actual musical talent and have become irrelevant. Keep playing wit yer apps and continue to collect ur retirement fund ya decrepit fukz. You lose. Quit wasting your time on music. Enjoy the small amount of time you have left.. don't spend your last days on an Internet forum. It's sad. So sad ;)

  • Wow, really? That's quite a disproportionate response. I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. But by all means, proclaim your musical relevance! Shout from the teeetops! Sing, young brother!

By the way if you don't want your grammatical skills criticized then learn to spell and compose a sentence pal. You may also want to can the leet speak horseshit before you're 30 too. Just some advice.

(Don't even get me started on the sickeningly disengenuous "So sad" patronizing. Same tactic used by a sociopathic fraud currently in way over his head. I'd avoid that company.)

Well, everyone here who reads a selfish, careless, disrespectful comment written by a random stranger has that brief moment of their life wasted, at best. Or worse, it stirs up the same hateful response (that crap is contagious) and the world becomes a slightly worse place.

So I would encourage you to take yourself a bit more seriously. Or at least show a sense of self-respect and respect of others here.

@johnn I didn't say YOU were in over your head. Reading comprehension is just as much an endangered species as grammar.

I think one thing that cats who were born after the internet hit completely forget is, it is in fact REAL PEOPLE on the other end of their computer. Because it is as ubiquitous as a light switch that reality of the internet gets taken for granted.

So, while you expect a response from a question about recording or just people to talk to while you're drunk like you did awhile back, remember those are real fuckers giving you a response. In the same vein, when you pop off some half coherent, idiotic comment don't be surprised when you get a negative response.

You can deflate it with "it's just a forum", "I don't know you" or "ain't that serious" if you'd like but the folks around here are real people my friend. That you don't get that pretty much sums up my appraisal of the situation.

    Be cool...

In contrast to the whole e-cool stuff I would like to present this:

It is arguably not great musicianship, but the looping skills are there. And more importantly, there's an undeniable fun and goofy spirit that is contagious. I want more of this. we're human, we don't all have perfect shiny shoes.
