There’s a bit of a lost ethos in some of these (certainly among those I’ve posted) which is related to punk’s DIY, but instead using a synth and whatever else was affordable.
The flavour is one of being defiantly productive in spite of being limited by technological primitiveness (no patch saving, no synchronisation, tape overdubbing, possibly not understanding a lot of the complexity) and also, like punk, not caring about talent limitations either. I like all of that.
I don’t think we could really get away with that today without being seen as something else, something lesser, instead. Talent shows like Britain’s Got Talent and The Voice have got a lot to answer for – they possibly stifle creativity among those who haven’t got any talent!
