iOS 11 IDAM
I was watching the WWDC live sessions and I saw a demo of IDAM (Inter Device Audio Midi)
Oh yeah!!!
Comments
can this video be posted?_
pleeeease ????
Ok , but where is the video for IDAM?
I watched the session live last night too.
AUv3's will gain flexible sizing and midi-out too...
(There was a demo of this at the end of the session using a upcoming version of GarageBand).
Guess this means that automation of plug-is can now be done both using AUParameters and Midi from the plug-in UI if correctly implemented. Quite nice indeed...
When properly implemented, AUParameter automation will be much better than Midi. Sample accurate and not restricted to 127 levels.
Yes! Yes! Now if all AU Hosts would just implement AU Parameter support, that would be great.
This would be amazing
Big plus for us amongst the other fuss....
That would be awesome, I wonder if there's a list of AU host apps that support AU parameters?
As far as I know, none of them record AU Parameters from the plugin GUI (i.e. by wiggling knobs on the screen) and only a handful support sending AU Parameters to the plugin (AUM, Garageband, MIDISteps, Modstep, ZMors, and a select few others). Most still rely on MIDI CC, which offers a suboptimal user experience.
Wow, very good to know, sounds like there's lots of untapped AU potential awaiting development.
So IDAM is basically what studiomux and musicio do but built in.....?
IDAM is cool but it could be even cooler if it was possible to do it between iOS devices.
As far as I know there are currently no lightning<->lightning cables available.
I guess iOS<->iOS 'IDAM' will come when/if Apple fully adopts USB-C across all devices...
I thought it was iOS to iOS
You can get a lightning USB adapter and a lightning cable and you have your connection. I transfer pictures to my iPad from iPhone that way all the time. Speeds are better than air drop lol
yep but better hopefully
it is
For pictures & videos that 'way' has always worked
(I've done iPhone->iPad Photo & Video transfers that way since the days of the 30-Pin CCK).
But 'IDAM' skips the Lightning->USB adapter in order to do it's magic.
Also there are no settings in iOS similar to the Audio & Midi settings available in macOS.
(When you use the Lightning->USB adpater the iOS device defaults to 'camera mode' meaning you get to the DCIM folder available on the device, that's partly the reason why iOS auto-launches the Photos app).
Using what cables? CCK?
That's not what they demonstrated in the video, it was iPad to mac. Though they did say you could aggregate several iOS devices.
>
Aggregation in macOS already works quite well with 1st Gen iPad Mini iOS9.3.5, iPhone 5 & iPad Air 2(iOS10.3.2).
Those are the 3 devices I've tried at the same time.
IDAM iOS<->iOS would indeed be quite cool, easy to 'Sample YouTube' or other sources
(I'd love to see a video on this).
Would be nice if they would open that up. Can't be that difficult especially if they having a files app.
Is public beta available yet?
Yepp, enabling the Files app to have access to 'everything' on an attached mass-storage device would be awesome.
It would also be nice to be able to directly access networked SMB-Shares from the Files app.
And a bit of wishful thinking...
...it would be cool to be able to make 'device backups' to SMB-Shares (Airport, NAS etc.) or attached USB-Drives.
You sir need to take a trip to that new shiny space ship they call apple and knock on the front door and never leave until you convince Tim Cook of the music possibilities of the other side of the iPad world.
They have to know what I can really do. Why sit on a piece of work that can open the world to new possibilities?
VIDEO IOS 11 Device to Device midi?

yes just did a video for you sir
Thank You Sir!
Is it too much to ask to check if you can stream audio between iOS devices too? (Ie. Just record random output from any iOS app to the other iOS device with the same cable setup).
It should work since all system audio is piped thru the lightning cable to the Mac already.
Excuting times ahead for sure!
Now this will get interesting if it works if/when attaching multiple iOS devices to a USB hub
