Free to Try vs Paid
What are your guys opinions on Free to try apps with In-App purchases vs Paid Apps?
Comments
Been a while since I bought NeoSoul Keys. Wasn't it released that way?
I dislike IAPs very much. Would prefer to go on demo videos.
Yea....We are coming out with Neo-Soul Keys Studio that is pretty much just like the desktop.
I think it could be a good way to advertise an app. no preset saving, and sound cutouts every 20 seconds. And otherwise the free app is fully functional. If I can hook up my midi keyboard, tweak some presets, spend an hour with a fully functional app, I'll be much happier to pay an IAP to unlock the full use of the app.
I don't know if the iOS community is ready to shift that way, but it's a viable solution.
Either scenario can work for me. Depends how it is handled.
I prefer paid with OPTIONAL sound expansion IAPs myself. I don't mind "free to try with one-time IAP activation" either. However, before you know it, if a company becomes greedy enough, they'll take away the one-time IAP activation option and replace it with subscription-only.
DRC had a nice, try me then buy me thing going on.
Agreed - I tried and I buyed DRC because I got an unfettered chance to see if it would work for me.
I guess it is in the mechanics of it. Restoring IAPs can be difficult and time-consuming. Also, it is not always obvious how much an IAP is until you hit buy. It can be a very clunky process.
I really like how it was done in Groovebox recently. Free to try it and get a really good feel for the workflow, then reasonable IAPs if you actually want to get deeper designing your own sounds or buying new ones. Gives me a good feel for the workflow before I spend the money, and often that's the thing that will keep me from using it if I don't bond with it.
One of the main problems with activation iap is that if the company goes under or the app gets removed from the AppStore your copy pretty much becomes useless when trying to reinstall it. Meanwhile an app that is buy once and fully activated you can backup the .ipa and reinstall it as many times as you want till it stops working in future IOS versions.
I prefer lite and full version. I seriously dislike IAP for functionality, no problem with sounds etc. IAP are inherently messy and complications for base functions. Like someone pointed out, IAP sometimes evolve into subscriptions (at this point not so much in music category, but in others). Would be very hard to get me to subscribe to a music app, if possible at all.
Anything but the subscription model.
>
Yes, this is the model. At the opposite end was what Intermorphics did to themselves with their crazy subscription plan.
Or there's the ik multimedia approach
Of a free app with iap AND a paid app with even more iap.
I always found this to be the most user friendly approach. Some other companies have done it as well.
Agreed. Oh and thanks for asking @GospelMusicians. You seem to care about what we think. Nice touch.
Also is Bassalicious ever going to be AB compatible?
BASSalicious works very nicely in AB3 as an AU
i appreciated notation making groovebox free to try and as a result I did buy all the iap
I would have been hesitatant buying it if it had a fee because I didn't like blocs..
So I think the free to try model is great
I'd much prefer either:
a) A free app that is fully functional, with compelling extras that can be added via IAP.
or
b) A 'pro' priced app that includes everything, for which I'd generally watch a few Youtube reviews before purchase.
The problem with a pro model, is that not all pro apps are made equal. The best, of course, do what they say on the tin and are often worth the price. Especially when you can get something like Animoog or Gadget in a sale.
Others, naming no names, purport to be pro, but are actually a form of cheap advertising that a company has shovelled into IOS with no particular desire to support or develop the app for this platform.
Then there are the clever bits of business, such as the deal done between Auria Pro and Fab Filters. As far as I know FF have no interest in expanding the compatability of their pro level filters to other IOS apps, but do make established and new ones available for exclusive use in Auria. One case where the combo of an IOS developer aiming high attracted a top developer from the desktop world.
Now, if only Auria Pro or maybe Cubasis, could do a deal with the peeps at Kontakt.
You can already load the Bassalicious AUv3 in AB3![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
@Samu We haven't forgotten about BASSalicious. We are working on some incredible upgrades for it and they will be free updates, with IAP soundbanks. Here is the "POSSIBLE" list and I say possible so don't get mad if it doesn't make the cut...lol:![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
1. Better preset system and more intuitive with Save and Save As options. Nonen of this Click to Activate thing.
2. Brand New Synthesis type which is a hybrid between wavetable and sample with a ton more of wave distortions
3. Full FX set
4. Better modulation routings as well
Development takes a bit of time, so just know we are working on it.
Cool! Thanks for the info!
I'm all in for pure synthesis and AUv3's so this all sounds like it will be a pretty neat update![:) :)](https://forum.loopypro.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
The current version of BASSalicious is already working quite nicely with the upcoming BM3 from Intua.
First, I would like to give my sincere thanks to you guys who have bought our stuff and to this forum. In many forums it usually ends up being a "bash the developer" session, but you guys are not like that. You state your honest review of the apps, but it is in a respectful way. I so appreciate that.
From a dev eloper standpoint there are a lot of struggles we face and I hope you guys appreciate the candid responses:
1. Apples AppStore infrastructure is still flawed. There is no easy way to reward existing NSK users with coupons for the newest version, because the coupons are so limited. There is no easy way to reward the desktop NSK users either. So adding incentives and such could be a lot better
2. Users are getting a $200 application for 90% off. If we have an introductory price of NSK Studio for $20, then that is practically 90% off. I think a lot of developers are trying to squeeze some extra cash, because the price of app is so low.
With that being said, I feel that the future of mobile sounds will be the iPad. The new iPad Pro is said to be as powerful as a 2016 Macbook Pro. So we are moving into fun times as the processors increase.
20 bucks sounds good to me
@GospelMusicians
Lite and full version, if anything. Or just the paid version and people can read reviews, look up videos, ask questions, do their own due diligence and take responsibility for their often less than 20 dollar decisions. I've blown my fair share of cash on apps that sucked or just weren't for me. If it sucks, kindly ask for a refund and explain why. They've never turned me down. If I end up not using it, i figure that's on me for not managing my APPetite and just eat the cost (in most cases).
haha @db909 APPetite...lol. Never heard that!
I'm still using AB2. I suppose one could probably put AUM in the input slot of AB2 and open Bassalicious as an AU there?
For some reason free, with endless iap makes me distrustful. It reminds me of all the awful, free games designed to get children to scream until their parents buy a "sack of coins" and a "chest of coins" or a "dumpster of coins". Historically the better ios software is generally just the "pro" price. I do like iaps for esoteric, extended functionality. It can be a reasonable model for developers to get money for an extensive update, with new features, without having to make it a new app.
