I prefer paid with OPTIONAL sound expansion IAPs myself. I don't mind "free to try with one-time IAP activation" either. However, before you know it, if a company becomes greedy enough, they'll take away the one-time IAP activation option and replace it with subscription-only.

DRC had a nice, try me then buy me thing going on.

Agreed - I tried and I buyed DRC because I got an unfettered chance to see if it would work for me.

    Same.

  • I don't prefer the IAP process for unlocking. But I love it for expansions

  • Try before you buy version is totally ok. No to IAP unlock. No Subscription.

  • The response to IAPs is a constant source of confusion to me.

Seems like everyone is basically ok with this two app scenario:

    1. Free version. Can be featured limited.
    2. Paid version. Can be a little pricey (by iOS standards) as long as it's good.

But this, very similar scenario raises hairs a bit:

    1. Free version. Can be featured limited.
      A. Include IAP to paid version
    2. Paid version. Can be a little pricey (by iOS standards) as long as it's good.

Personally, I'd check it out with 1 and if I liked it, delete it and go buy 2. But can absolutely understand the motivation on a developer's part to offer upgrade options directly within an app. Customer is already there, etc.

Think the model really comes down to the app's scope and model. The newer Novation apps were obviously built from the ground up with IAPs in mind. And they've done a great job of aligning their revenue model with expectations expressed here.

Seems to me that neosoul keys could align really well with these expectations as well. Basic app, basic functionality for a low base price (or free if it will work for you guys) and then IAPs for additional sounds, additional effects and (possibly less popular) additional tweak ability.

  • Another example of IAPs that would likely rub people the wrong way

    Version 1:
$5 app with 5 sounds, MIDI and preset storage

    Version 2:
Free app with two sounds, no MIDI and no preset storage
Includes $5 IAP that includes 3 more sounds, MIDI and preset storage

V1 is cool. V2 is flame bait. I don't understand this. I do get the basic notion of "don't charge for standards", absolutely, but the only difference is V1 masks the charging, the other does not.

  • @GospleMusicians I like the way you did Neo-Soul Keys, I thought it was appropriate for that app: it looked like just another synth app, but the fantastic sounds made it stand out for me. It was great to be able to tryout each sound and buy them when I felt like it was the right time. Great that there was no limitations so I could check how everything worked. (I've since bought them all and Neo is on my front page, partly because of the killer sounds, partly because I thought you guys showed some respect that we would love the sounds and buy them.) You're still the finest EP on iOS!

    Anything but the subscription model.

    Agreed.

  • Imo if its about instrument app that is going to be quite expensive with everything on it, i think best model is to offer one(or few) instruments for cheap price(or free) and have rest as IAPs. I think swarplug is a good example of this.

This allows to ask bit more from the whole pack(when bought separately, but tyere should be some discounted buy all iap) without it feeling too bad for the customers. And since some might want only one or two instruments, they would get them a bit cheaper.

Its hard for me to say which model gives better profits, as im not a dev and havent looked at this closer. But the fact that more people would buy the app(even if without iaps or just with one or two), and the fact that you could ask a bit more extra for everything from tyose who truly want it all, will balance things out a bit.
