Ravencroft 275 Piano - Another UVI app

This belongs to the better pianos....even in the desktop world.
Not sure if the iOS version is stripped down or not:
At least UVI releasing more stuff for iOS:

  • Nice, but a pricey....... Almost 40euros...... 850mb download......

  • edited June 2017

Well the mac version is a 6gb download which uncompresses to 35gb, the iOS version is about 0.9gb so there must be some cut downness going on....

Sounds nice in the video though

  • iTunes link for convenience: https://itunes.apple.com/app/ravenscroft-275-piano/id966586407?mt=8

I'm very interested in this one. I'm curious what the polyphony is for this app? Also, I'm curious if some of the features from the desktop version (such as key/pedal noise, una corda, muted strikes, etc) will make it into the iOS version at some point? @BastienCo

  • What is "hybrid modelling "?

  • yes it is stripped down somewhat ... but it sounds really lovely.

I've been playing with it over the last two weeks and I would it say it is now my favorite piano app on iOS. I have iGrand, CMP, Module + Ivory and SampleTank's Imperial Grand. I like them all. But this one I think is unique among them in that it allows you to adjust the piano's sound in ways the others don't. And it sounds very rich.

  • Well, the desktop version (which has indeed more features, samples) cost $199.
So i see €39.99 in the app store, which is not the average cheap price but i think it's O.K.
Interesting that this use hybrid of sample and modeling since the vst is pure sampled.
But size is not everything if a tool is clever programmed/scripted.

iOs version feature only the close mic but feature all the samples of the original desktop version besides Una Corda, half pedaling and muted strikes. The script that mimic perfectly the nuance of the original piano is the same.
Basically everything that makes the sound of the R275 is there :)

  • Hybrid modelling is about the script. There is no synthesis per se.

    Hope this clarifies things

  • @otristan thanks for the clarification. Is there a plan to add any of those features (una corda/muted strikes etc) in future updates, maybe as IAPs?

There are currently no plan. The goal was to keep the footprint reasonable for the iOS platform as features like that would double the size of the app

Ah ok good to know. I thought it was some form of A.I :)

Well, technically scripting is about this.It allows to have more complex behavior than the one you will found in traditional sampler engine. Time dependent release sample for accurate true staccato, real sympathetic resonance simulation, stuff like that...

Thanks, from the video it does sound very good but will wait to see fuller demos and reviews

  • Oh dear, the 40 euro price tag is hefty.

  • The days of 99p for a synth like Animoog seem to be far behind us. I guess we will just have to adjust to having fewer but hopefully better apps in the future. We're still spoiled compared to desktop prices though.

  • I think this a great price relative to desktop. Hopefully it's a signal that more quality desktop-exclusive plugins will make their way to iOS. Then maybe Ableton, Logic Pro, Cubase Pro etc will follow.

  • Damn that's a hefty price. Then again, it's also AUv3 compatible and may work in Beatmaker 3 Beta (although I can't afford the R275 right now to test it).

I too have been Beta testing this lovely sounding piano app. I'll miss it once the beta expires since it's too pricy to me right now. It's got nice controls: equalizer, reverb and velocity. Also global tuning, but I didn't mess around with that. The app worked great stand alone and as AUx on iPhone 6+, iPad4, and iPad mini2 -- all on iOS 10.3.

    Ditto down to the dimes.

  • For $15 more you can buy the 14 gigabyte Colossus piano.

  • I think for many of us, saving 13 gigs is worth $15. :)

I think I'd buy the Ravenscroft, even at the same price

  • Want.

  • What iOS needs is Pianoteq. They said they were not interested in porting over to iOS last year. What a shame. It has a very small footprint; perfect for the limited storage of an iPad or iPhone.

I know it's all depending on the software & size of the company/developer, but I think beta testers should get some sort of concession (discount on future purchase or dare I say, get it comped) after the beta closes.

It is all relative: I know Apple or Google isn't going to start giving out freebies for people who get the betas of iOS or Android, but a small dev or niche company that communicates with the beta testers regularly & recieves crash reports & analytics off their devices could lay a license on cats like @TozBourne without too much loss right?

Maybe I am missing other considerations on the developers side, it's just my opinion...

I agree with you, if only for good PR, but I would welcome a dev's perspective on this...

Did you try offline bouncing as an AU? (in GB or Cubasis). This is where Colossus fails for me

Bouncing (in Cubasis at least) is sweet as a peach...
