I sit here lamenting " No Mini Pro yet"

    Fist bump.

And apparently the mini line it's discontinued.

  • A real shame. I have a family member who works at The Big A and I'm hitting them up trying to holler at the R&D team. Apple either needs to let us get iPad apps on the + phones or make a got dame Mini Pro. I just don't want bigger and compactness of gear is my number 1 selling point. Sorry to derail thread tho aloha

  • I have the old 12.9" and I'm extremely envious of y'all with the new one :)
but that said... the screen size is perfect. I'll never be tempted to go smaller. No way.
Enjoy yourselves, new iPad owners

  • I'm heading into the Apple store today to make a purchase.
I've already tried twice, but couldn't make a decision between the two.

For those that took the plunge earlier - are any of you wishing you'd picked differently?

  • And here I am loving my new iPad Pro 9.7. I thought very carefully about the bigger model, but price also comes into it. The Pro 9.7 is just a really nice fit, and cost wise is great. I don't know that I'll ever change.

I’d say pick them up and really imagine yourself composing with it (try GarageBand and build a track in the store). The 12.9 makes the 10.5 look really small and insignificant. So almost got 12.9. But after building tracks in both I felt 10.5 was better for my current mobile lifestyle. 12.9 is glorious though.

  • @nrgb I was in the same position before I finally got the original 12.9 Pro: I had to repeatedly hold them in my hands and try to ignore the totally-untypical environment of the Apple Store display tables. I kept having to remind myself that the 12.9 is only "really big" by relative iPad standards but IRL equates to a sheet of paper (almost exactly) that I've interacted with my whole life. What's (slightly) bigger transport-wise feels downright epic to gaze into and touch while creating Stuff.

  • 10.5 felt like the perfect size on a flight. Wouldn't have wanted bigger.

I've had my 12.9 for a couple weeks now and no way could I go back to a smaller screen. I just don't see the whole less portable thing for me as I've carried an iPad everywhere I go 100% of the time going back to the iPad1. I have not noticed any difference between carrying my old iPad4 9.7 and my new 12.9 and I still feel comfortable using the 12.9 everywhere I used to use my old 9.7. My wife got the new 10.5 and it's awesome, but after using my 12.9 for a week the 10.5, and my old 9.7, both just look and feel too small.

Yes, there is a lot of 12.9 optimization work that still needs to be done by devs, but even without the optimization you still have a lot more finger space and that gives you more accurate control of small knobs and other "hard to set accurately" controls in apps. The obvious big win for the 12.9 is using the side by side multitasking, both apps feel comfortably large to work with, something I don't feel on the 10.5 or smaller.

One example is using Bias/Bias FX. I've always had trouble setting the amp controls to the exact numbers I want, i.e. 4.2 or 3.9 instead of 4.0. With the 12.9 its easy to set them to the exact numbers I want. Not really a big deal in this case, but its a good example.

I also got the 512GB model and after days of loading apps and music on it I still have nearly 400GB of available space! However I am only up to the D''s in my music lib so far but :). We will see what happens when I start recording in Auria on it. That's the real reason I got so much space. At this moment I am sure I could have done OK with the 256 but a year from now who knows?

This is great insight. How is beatmaker 3 to use on the 12.9? Are you able to split screen it too with other Apps, other audiobussed synths etc using ios11?

Hi, Thanks! I don't have BM3 and have not moved to iOS 11 yet so I can't say, sorry. I am primarily a guitar player so I use mainly Bias/Bias FX, and Auria. The 12.9 makes Auria a lot easier to use for me. For the apps that do support split screen, the 12.9 really is much easier to use with my older eyes than the 10.5 or 9.7 models IMHO. My wife has the new 10.5 and I've used it enough to notice a big difference. If you have good younger eyes it might not be as big a difference for you as it is for us dinosaurs.

Just as an aside, my wife got her 10.5 before I got my 12.9. After I got my 12.9 she borrowed it one evening and spent a couple days trying to exchange her 10.5 for my 12.9, but it was too late. She really liked using the 12.9 a lot more than her 10.5.

I have not had one second thought on getting my 12.9 and I do carry it everywhere I go,100% of the time.

  • My wife has the 12.9. I just upgraded to the 10.5 My main reasons?

It works with my focusrite itrack dock https://itrack.focusrite.com/products/itrack-dock. And it's more portable to throw in a backpack and not worry about th size.

  • I should add, the 12.9 might also work with the focusrite dock, I just haven't confirmed it.

  • What does Geoshred look like on the big screen? I've only ever played it on the Ipad Mini I have checked out of the library. Are the notes bigger, or are there just more strings? Or is this something you can set in the software?

  • I went for 10.5 256GB about a week ago. It's the perfect size for me. The 12.9 just felt too big for my use. And, to be candid... I think I think Steve Jobs was right. For mobile use, the 9.7 was the perfect start size.

That being said, if you aren't toting it around much... I'd go 12.9. For taking it with you a lot and travel, etc. the 10.5 is a nice compromise for screen graphic use real estate and portability.

I was just at the coffee shop for a couple hours... mostly consuming content and nothing productive... I felt the 10.5 was noticeably heavier and more unwieldy for casual use. My Air 2 was considerably more comfortable for that sort of use. The 12.9 would've been too much for sure.

Also, if I was using an iPad more solely as a laptop replacement (I'm not) I'd definitely go with the 12.9.

  • In split-screen mode, the 12.9 puts two iPad-sized apps on screen, whereas the 10.5 displays two iPhone-sized versions.

Also, be careful of the case. Because the 12.9 iPad is so big, cases are a lot heavier.

I use Apple’s Smart Cover now, I like to take it off while reading. Without a case, the 12.9 is pretty light, and very thin.

Aren't you worried that the back of the iPad may get scratched dropped etc or do you use it mainly safely at home?
Re the split screen, does that mean you can run two music apps side by side like an iOS daw and a synth ?

  • Also interested in the way split screen works on the 12.9. Does that also mean more apps are compatible with split screen?

no. only apps optimized for it will do split screen
most music apps are not; and for many I also see no way how they could be optimized. Except for cutting them in half and letting you pan around ...

Maybe there might be a case of split screening with two thirds of the screen with say BM3 and a third with native app notes for lyrics and notes. ? Maybe not as much opotnsing needed if it's a larger two thirds split ?

I have another case I use when I take it out. Or I just put it in a little bag. It’s also pretty tough, but I haven’t dropped it yet. I’ve dropped my iPhone way more times.

Re the split screen, does that mean you can run two music apps side by side like an iOS daw and a synth ?

Almost no music apps are optimized to run in split view (most don’t even work in portrait). You can pull in a compatible app in slide over, though, but it stays floating over the main app until you dismiss it. It’s handy for apps like Sidecar.

I love the screen keyboard size and the extra real estate of the 12.9 but I've realised that all the apps are the same size / resolution no matter 10.5 or 12.9.

Cubasis is just scaled up and actually looks a bit silly so huge like that.

Gadget is the same size other than when you full screen a synth. Of course you get three extra tracks and three extra gadgets on screen than the 10.5 but I don't see that as a huge advantage. Everything else is the same size. Bm3 too. Again you can just see a few more tracks and the waveforms are bigger which is good.

Haven't tried lugging around the 12.9 yet. I'm sure it won't be much more of a big deal even though many have said it's cumbersome, but even at home I found myself picking up the 10.5 much more than the 12.9. Just because it's like a little book and is more convenience for me personally In that respect. Just not sure the 12.9 is giving that much more.

I do like seeing more of bm3 in song mode though. But Ive found I can't watch YouTube videos full screen on my lap. The screens too big for being so close. So you have to minimise it in which case you might as well be watching on a 10.5.

Going to give it one more week before I decide whether to keep the 12.9

All of this. It will be personal preference in the end, but after checking out a friend 12.9 for a while, I went with a new 12.9 512 Gb and I'm a very happy camper.

I carry it everywhere - it's not a hassle, the extra size is offset by the larger screen and ease of use. I do less squinting, less zooming, enjoy reading more. My air2 seems a bit small now :) I'm also on 11 beta on it and it is a joy to use.

Thanks for a great discussion everyone!

Argh I just wrote a long reply and the editor deleted it.

TLDR; lots to think about but I can see most potential with the 12.9", portability won't be too much of an issue, and I'll just have to learn to live with blurry pixel stretched apps for a while (a bit of a gamble that Cubasis updates in the near future... I really hope so as that's what I'm in 90% of the time).

Edit: Also I went into an apple store earlier and the pencil didn't feel quite as satisfying on the 10.5", but non-music related.

Hey what size iPad did you get int the end and how are you finding it ?

    I went with the 10.5".

I tried very hard to talk myself into getting the Big Boy™, but after holding in-store I felt that it was just a little too heavy for general 'tablet' use.

I'm thrilled with my purchase. It's the best computer I've ever owned, and I'm now seriously considering picking up the 12.9" as well...

While the is true for some apps, other apps, like the PositiveGrid Apps are bigger on the 12.9. Many apps allow you to use larger font if you want to. Music is maybe 30% of what I use my iPad for and most everything else I can make bigger. I've been reading books and storing all my tech manuals, etc. on iPads since the iPad 1 and the 12.9 is by far the best reader I've used and is easy to adjust for my eyes.
