I'm heading into the Apple store today to make a purchase.
I've already tried twice, but couldn't make a decision between the two.

For those that took the plunge earlier - are any of you wishing you'd picked differently?

Which size did you get in the end and how are funding it ?

    I went with the 10.5".

I tried very hard to talk myself into getting the Big Boy™, but after holding in-store I felt that it was just a little too heavy for general 'tablet' use.

I'm thrilled with my purchase. It's the best computer I've ever owned, and I'm now seriously considering picking up the 12.9" as well...

That's interesting. I really wish there was an in between size. The 12.8 seems just that bit too big even though I enjoy the extra screen space. If the 10.5 is so good why are you considering getting the 12.9 too. Do you use it mainly for music ?

I've had my 12.9 for a couple weeks now and no way could I go back to a smaller screen. I just don't see the whole less portable thing for me as I've carried an iPad everywhere I go 100% of the time going back to the iPad1. I have not noticed any difference between carrying my old iPad4 9.7 and my new 12.9 and I still feel comfortable using the 12.9 everywhere I used to use my old 9.7. My wife got the new 10.5 and it's awesome, but after using my 12.9 for a week the 10.5, and my old 9.7, both just look and feel too small.

Yes, there is a lot of 12.9 optimization work that still needs to be done by devs, but even without the optimization you still have a lot more finger space and that gives you more accurate control of small knobs and other "hard to set accurately" controls in apps. The obvious big win for the 12.9 is using the side by side multitasking, both apps feel comfortably large to work with, something I don't feel on the 10.5 or smaller.

One example is using Bias/Bias FX. I've always had trouble setting the amp controls to the exact numbers I want, i.e. 4.2 or 3.9 instead of 4.0. With the 12.9 its easy to set them to the exact numbers I want. Not really a big deal in this case, but its a good example.

I also got the 512GB model and after days of loading apps and music on it I still have nearly 400GB of available space! However I am only up to the D''s in my music lib so far but :). We will see what happens when I start recording in Auria on it. That's the real reason I got so much space. At this moment I am sure I could have done OK with the 256 but a year from now who knows?

This is great insight. How is beatmaker 3 to use on the 12.9? Are you able to split screen it too with other Apps, other audiobussed synths etc using ios11?

Hi, Thanks! I don't have BM3 and have not moved to iOS 11 yet so I can't say, sorry. I am primarily a guitar player so I use mainly Bias/Bias FX, and Auria. The 12.9 makes Auria a lot easier to use for me. For the apps that do support split screen, the 12.9 really is much easier to use with my older eyes than the 10.5 or 9.7 models IMHO. My wife has the new 10.5 and I've used it enough to notice a big difference. If you have good younger eyes it might not be as big a difference for you as it is for us dinosaurs.

Just as an aside, my wife got her 10.5 before I got my 12.9. After I got my 12.9 she borrowed it one evening and spent a couple days trying to exchange her 10.5 for my 12.9, but it was too late. She really liked using the 12.9 a lot more than her 10.5.

I have not had one second thought on getting my 12.9 and I do carry it everywhere I go,100% of the time.

Interesting what you say about the 12`9 being better for looking at if your eye sights not so good because most of the apps have the same size resolution so the sizes are exactly the same. Gadget bm3 etc all the same size UI other than a few extra onscreen tracks. Due to the extra real estate

While the is true for some apps, other apps, like the PositiveGrid Apps are bigger on the 12.9. Many apps allow you to use larger font if you want to. Music is maybe 30% of what I use my iPad for and most everything else I can make bigger. I've been reading books and storing all my tech manuals, etc. on iPads since the iPad 1 and the 12.9 is by far the best reader I've used and is easy to adjust for my eyes.

Ah that all makes sense now. Sounds like its perfect for you.

I agree. An option somewhere between the two would be perfect.

I'm only considering adding the 12.9" because of how much I'm enjoying the 10.5... The extra screen real-estate would be welcome for those times I'm planted firmly at a desk.

That said, I'm not regretting the 10.5 and would make the same choice again.

Agh I'm still so torn as to whether to keep the 12 or swap for the 10 which I liked before. But if cubasis gets optimised and Logic Pro makes its way to iPad etc I may regret not keeping the 12 for that extra space.
What I miss about the 10 though is literally casually picking it up like a small a5 book around the house which I just don't do with the 12. And means I may use it more. If I'm going to be at a desk I'll just use my laptop anyway. And I really want to get more into mobile production iPad apps than desktop.
    Everyday I change my mind.

  • Hello Everyone!!!! I'm new here. Please bear with me. I'm thinking about getting the iPad Pro 12.9 and I need some advice. I had the iPad Pro 10.5 but sold it due to needing money. I liked the iPad Pro 10.5 due to it being portable and I could easily carry it around with me. However, I didn't like the small screen. I felt like the screen was too small. Now, I'm thinking of getting the iPad Pro 12.9 due to the screen being bigger. However, I have Cerebral Palsy and have limited use of the right side of my body. I'm afraid the iPad Pro 12.9 might be too heavy for me to carry unless I carry it in a bag. Also, I'm concerned that I won't be able to hold the iPad Pro 12.9 in my lap or I won't be able to prop it up in my lap if I'm sitting in a bus station or an airport. Can anyone give me some advice? I'm so torn between the iPad Pro 10.5 and the iPad Pro 12.9. Please help!!!!!

    Hi Chris
I went through this. I tried out both. I went for the 10.5. I loved the 12 but the portability of the smaller one won out for me. I was really torn like you and really fell in love with the larger screen. But I don't regret my decision. If i was sat at a computer desk all the time the 12 is a no brainer but I use mine everywhere like on my lap, couch, out and about etc. And so overall the 10.5 won out for that reason. But it's such a personal decision. Either one you go for you will end up making work as they are both obviously amazing. With your physical condition i think you may be better off with the smaller one but the only person who can make the right decision is you. Buy the 12 and test it out, you have 14 days to swap the size.

  • I have the 12.9 and now a 9.7" looks like a tiny mini Ipad... I love 12.9". It is perfect for me.

  • I had my 12.9 for about a week and found it too big even for a sofa use. Also when it was time to put it down I had to think twice as hard to find a safe place for it (kids etc). Screen estate wise it felt a bit like being a little too close to the screen at the cinema. It's just my head I know but I'm so used to 9.7 it felt stupid to be looking at a much bigger device.

There's also the weight issue, which by itself might not be a problem but when you get a case on top it's gonna be a little heavier still. Of course it's not in the same league as a laptop but if you're used to something lighter like air2...you get my drift.

10.2 even if just a fraction bigger than 9.7 seems a great option for me. Just my 5p.

Does anyone have long term experience with the 12.9" (and also any with the 10.5") and have any insight into music making, app resolutions, devs updating apps, portability etc? Any opinions are much appreciated!

Despite my on-going battle with Apple concerning a fault on this iPad Pro 10.5, I must be fair and say that - fault aside - it is much better than my Air 2, which now feels sluggish. Like you, I had difficulty choosing between this size and the big boy, but chose this as I could get the required storage, same RAM as bigger version, and same portability as my Air 2. The display is also noticeably better.
