KASPAR: First Impressions?

  • At first i thought also that the morph would be just some mixing between the layers but then i read through the manual( does not say too much about it) and then after some playing with the morph i discovered it is real morphing between the parameters of the different layers.
You could have an arp on the first layer and make it morph into a chord stab into layer2.

Now if you could load samples into the oscilators that would be really sick. But even as it is like this it´s powerful.

  • I dig it. Super simple workflow and it sounds good. It's versatile.

Sorry, I don't think it is, I think it is just blending the sounds. I did a simple test with one synth layer at one pitch and a second at a higher pitch. If it was morphing the parameters, you'd get a continuous change of pitch from one to the other, and you don't, you get a mix between the two pitches. I still think it is a terrific synth, just wanted to clarify.

By contrast, Virsyn's Cube Synth does morph the actual parameters between the synth sounds in each of the four corners.

Well I think it is more about the timbres and the polyphony in respect to frequency and the incalculable effect of one on another.

    For instance, LFO.................LOW FREQUENCY OSCIL.

Those frequencies on a mono phonic synth do amazing things to the wavelength and performance.

So envision full frequency spectrum of multiple wavetypes with staggered frequency and the endless sound palate available.

I really, really love this app already.

    Why?

Besides the sound quality and overall performance of the app?

The similar concept of multi timbres on a geoplane similar to Animoog. Being that Animoog is my favorite of all time, this now moves right up there.

    AND ITS FUN!

Not tedious "programming" like some other synths at times.

And if anything, in the beginning things are frustrating, but not here.

They also blend their rich history of effects and lay it out in an amazingly simple yet high functionality.

    I LOVE IT.

    What say you?

I agree and I look forward to hearing one of your preset banks for it too, I'll bet your already working on one right?

Yeah, I should've just suggested him Googling the reference. ;)

To get back on track though... I love Magellan's sound, and I'm impressed with LayR's capabilities (though I can't get anywhere near the genius of @Brice 's presets with it) and I'm a longtime fan of Mitosynth as well as Grain Science which can morph sample layers together. Then there's the brilliant new Synthscaper that I'm loving as well.

What does KASPAR bring to party that I don't already have at this point?

  • Mr. HaQ will do another Kaspar live-stream on Thursday :)

    Hadn't seen that one. Cool.

Just watched the Synth Anatomy video too... very clear what it does. Looks really fun. I've heard that it's CPU intensive. I plan on moving to a 10.5 in the next month or so, but in the interim, will the Air2 suffice?

It's an AU for one thing which none of those list are yet. I like that you can copy and paste layers from one preset to another. I don't have Layr yet but thought it looked difficult to program. But this looks a bit easier overall. The morph thingy is nice, but still haven't worked out how morphy it really is. It works well as a modulation source between the layers.

  • Runs great on my Air 2

Works fine on my Air 2 :)
It's quite fun to tweak too.

The CPU usage depends on how complex the patches are but I've not been able to make my Air 2 'crackle' or reach over >60% CPU with highest quality setting...

I've been using it in a setup with other apps and have had to rain in the settings. So, I tried a fresh start ipad and running the app alone on highest setting. Running the stock presets, I quickly was able to find patches that made my Air 2 latest iOS head over 70% and peak at over 80% on occasions.

Seems all is not equal somewhere.

  • Weird. Thanks for the feedback! I'm going to have to watch more video to decide. I'm guessing this is really more for those making tunes and such, and less for weird sound designy stuff?

Great for both really. It's a great synth packed in there, that I have no doubts.

  • Complexity in inverse proportion to opacity and in absolutely the right way. A lovely bit of work.

I would like to, but I don't have Kaspar.
However, I do have Dickey's first guitar.
This is true (I spent a lot of time talking books with him when I was in college) It is a flashy Framus acoustic. Big Jim ignored his guitar playing friend's advice to buy a used Martin, and went for the cool looking, but not so great sounding, Framus. Big Jim eventually did acquire a number of Martins.
He really was a larger-than-life figure.

    I gotta tell you.

    SynthScaper
    LayR
    Kaspar
    Animoog
    Ripplemaker

Don't see a need for another synth again for me.

Granted I will use a DRC or another once and a while.

But these next gen multi synth monsters are hitting the sweet spot for me like I have waited to happen on ios.

    Then the Audio Damage Fx.

    I feel touched.................

I know what the movie is silly!

NOW IT IS EVEN MORE FUNNY YOU EXPLAINING TO ME WHAT IT IS!

    OMG

    I love to laugh.

And just like that, the struggle has ended to find an appropriate name for this obscene preset I'm cooking in KASPAR ;)

    GREAT IDEA

FOR ALL YOU WHO ENJOY TIME AWAY IN RURAL GEORGIA AS IN THIS THREAD LETS DO A KASPAR DELIVERANCE PRESET CHALLENGE!

Each person make a DELIVERANCE INSPRIRED KASPAR PRESET PATCH!

THEN WE SHARE LISTEN AND YOU BETTER PRAY GOOD!

    You planning on getting it?

I think it is a deal.

    I gotta tell you.

I just remembered that I do have a Deliverance inspired track somewhere in all of this clutter. I recorded it 27 or 28 years ago using a SK-1 and a couple of jam boxes. This masterpiece was called "Cornhole Lotta Love" and obviously it used the banjo lick, pig noises, and my Gibby Haynes inspired delivery of appropriately rewritten version of Plant's lyrics. I attributed the production to "Eddie Kreamer" and the publishing to "Swinesong" It made a nice little cassette gift for my friends. If I do run across my master tape, I really should upload it.
