I can't figure out yet if the midi in is working properly or not...sometimes it seems to. But I'm trying to get Patterning to trigger different pads and I can't get it to work yet no matter what I try in the configuration. even with route all midi to selected pad switched off.

Same here. What's vexing is that it's flaky. Works fine with some apps but not with others. I'm still aware it could be user error.

Yes it's very confusing, tried yesterday with step poly arp and seemed to be working but today with Patterning it's not. I feel they need to make the midi in workflow a bit clearer, seems very muddy.

edit: Yes pretty sure it's not working unless I've done something wrong, if I select any midi input I can't get anything to trigger multiple pads in the bank, even when I change the pad notes in the pad editor to the notes I'm sending ...seems like its always stuck on keys mode

I spent a good chunk of time yesterday trying to crack this for Future Drummer and Patterning and came to the same conclusion. So for now I am just using keymode and building traditional drum kits and triggering them in the BM3 pattern editor. A shame to lose the pads though. Anyway, here is the only padless solution I got...

    Eh, a lukewarm 'win'...

It does feel like a bank level option could help this. Something like 'Seperate Link Group Pad Notes' could be added.

While I don't like adding another app to the system I am playing with midiflow, mapping specific notes to channels for pad placement... feeling optimistic, but that may just be the Kona coffee kicking in.

Yes I've been trying that too! Well, I've so far tried to have a different midflow channel for each pad but hasn't worked for me yet...

Yes think I'm giving up as it's a bug. Definitely something screwy happening with midi in. The notes being read in by BM3 aren't the ones being sent either....

((Edit: Don't bother with this, Wim's method is best. But if you need to get Future Drummer to work a version of this should do the trick))

WOohoo! this works! I love you Midiflow! (yes Patternings notes are off but it can work anyway)

  • Oh shit, ignore the fact that the pad names and wav file names don't match in BM3... that could look confusing. Forgot to rename them to match but that doesnt matter.

Great :) Wondering if this can be done with AB3 and midiflow adapter. Might give it a try.

Yes, hope that becomes AB3 at some point but I mean from Patterning send to midflow adapter port and select midiflow adapter in BM3 both hosted in AB3 you should be able to save it all, in theory. I was trying this earlier but started to get a bit lost and took a break :)

I was able to get this working with minimal fuss and without MidiFlow. The secret is assigning a different channel to each pad.

Use Patterning for the output. It will work with Beatmaker 3 as the output, but then you might get it triggering other banks if you're not careful. Note that the octave in Patterning needs to be set one higher than the pad note in BM3.

Select Patterning for the INPUT PORT on the BANK, and set to ALL CHANNELS

Leave the PAD settings to BANK SETTING and BANK CHANNEL

Be sure Patterning is enabled as an input in the Midi settings. It was off by default for some reason for me. Turn Omni for Pads off.

I seem to recall that when I tried this that each pad would end up recording all the notes. That is why I used midiflow to filter out the extra notes per channel. How does your recording look?

Ok good this is working for the Patterning port on different channels, but not if I do the same technique with midflow adapter strangely. It seems to favour some ports over others. but at least this works :)

    Nope.

I should mention that Patterning is hosted in AudioBus 3, not within BM3 as IAA.

    It's working correctly here.

If you go into keymode do you see extra notes?

    Nope.

I should mention that Patterning is hosted in AudioBus 3, not within BM3 as IAA.

    AB3 midi?

  • No. Audio slot. Should work the same if not in AudioBus, but that's just the way I do things whenever I have multiple apps.

I see.. I am a little confused though.

    You say...

    But then you say...

Leave the PAD settings to BANK SETTING and BANK CHANNEL

    What am I missing?

he means in patterning. you can set it so each part is on a different channel. its how i drive a volca sample with it.

Correct, in Patterning. The Midi in seems to need to be on separate channels to go to different pads rather than to notes within a single pad. Sorry for the confusion.

Well cool beans! It is total working for Patterning without Midiflow.

Future Drummer still seems to require Midiflow though because you cannot send separate channels per part.

No worries and thanks for the help, it is nice not to have to use the mapping and delete layers etc when loading samples. Drag/drop/done still lives! Whoot!

  • I still wish like hell that @JohannesD would release a midi-note mapper AB3 filter. I'd love to have an easy way to map whatever the drum app I'm using's output notes to a standard pad mapping in BM3 or wherever. You can do a little with the keyboard splitter and scales ones, but I just want a plain ol' note remapped. He doesn't seem interested though.

  • Here's another solution for use with Patterning and midiflow adapter. Added bonus here is that you can experiment with midifilters etc.

    http://preset.audiob.us/l66hqp5780qVVBK

It should be all in the preset (apart from BM3) but pics below, in BM3 you select the appropriate pad and select midiflow adapter for input channel and port, different channels for each pad like before. The bank channel and port I left blank.

I'd also wish that @JohannesD would also update midflow adapter so that it shows each port number in the AB lanes image as you can't see which port is which.

COol man! thanks a ton, I have yet to play with AB3 midifilters but look forward to it.

  • Here is a setup for Future Drummer with an included Midiflow setup file...

Hopefuly this file works as I have never sent a midiflow config before...

  • Thanks :) Another thing I've just found out is if you replace a sample on a pad it loses it's midi settings which is annoying, hope they fix that too...
